Depreciation can turn yesterday’s exotic into a used-car bargain, bringing once-unattainable performance machines within reach of buyers who might otherwise consider a new mainstream sedan. However, a tempting sticker price does not necessarily make an expensive performance car a smart financial decision.

High repair bills, potential mechanical problems, and ongoing maintenance costs can quickly erode the savings made at purchase. Long-term value retention also matters, particularly for buyers who plan to sell their cars eventually. Before celebrating a seemingly incredible deal, it pays to look beyond the asking price and consider the true cost of ownership.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Has Lost Almost 60% Of Its Value Since New

Imagine writing a $168,000 check for a new Mercedes-AMG GT, then watching a nearly identical car sell for $52,000 eight years later. That 58% collapse in asking price is what makes the GT look like a bargain – and what makes it dangerous.

Early first-generation Mercedes-AMG GT coupes from 2016 to 2018 can occasionally be found advertised for around $52,000 to $55,000, particularly when mileage is high. Some older examples may fall within a broader $45,000 to $65,000 range, although buyers should check listings carefully. Prices near the lower end can refer to the four-door GT 53 rather than the original two-door sports car.

According to VinAssessment, a 2016 AMG GT had a median asking price of $70,297 in its October 2026 listing snapshot, compared with $168,407 for a 2027 model. That represents an approximately 58% difference between the asking prices of different model years, not the measured depreciation of one vehicle from its original purchase price.

The decline is also apparent in the more powerful 2016 AMG GT S. Kelley Blue Book lists its original MSRP at $130,825 and its current Fair Purchase Price at approximately $65,700. Although the GT S is a separate variant, its valuation illustrates how much less buyers may pay for an early example than its original buyer paid when new.

The Porsche 911 Loses Just 17.1% Of Its Value In Five Years

The Porsche 911 has a significant advantage over the Mercedes-AMG GT when it comes to value retention. According to iSeeCars, the 911 loses an estimated 17.1% of its value over five years, compared with 40.7% for its Mercedes-AMG rival. These figures represent estimated five-year depreciation, rather than the total amount either model has lost since its original sale. But a lower depreciation rate tells only part of the story – because what the Mercedes loses in resale value, it may also cost you in the garage.

That difference can have a meaningful impact on ownership costs. A car that retains a larger share of its value may return more money to its owner when it is eventually sold or traded in, reducing the financial cost of owning it over several years. For buyers who regularly change vehicles, that retained value can be just as important as the original purchase price.

The 911’s stronger performance in this comparison also gives prospective owners a reason to consider the longer-term financial picture rather than focusing solely on purchase costs. However, these percentages are averages, not guarantees for individual cars. Actual resale values vary according to model year, mileage, condition, equipment, service history, and broader market demand.

Collectible variants and desirable specifications can behave differently from the wider model range, while poorly maintained examples may struggle to command strong prices. The figures nevertheless suggest that the 911 has historically provided more predictable value retention over the measured five-year period.

A Single Mercedes-AMG GT Repair Could Cost $15,000

One of the biggest risks when buying an early Mercedes-AMG GT is the potential cost of a major transmission repair. According to au7o.io, a failed dual-clutch transaxle can cost approximately $5,000 to $15,000 to repair. On a car purchased for $50,000, the upper estimate would amount to 30% of the purchase price, a substantial expense that could quickly change the financial appeal of owning one.

The transmission is not the only concern highlighted by the reliability database. It lists 16 known issues affecting the AMG GT, classifying 10 of them as critical. Among the reported problems are carbon-fiber driveshaft separation and failures involving 48-volt electrical systems. Both illustrate why prospective buyers should investigate an individual car’s mechanical condition rather than assume that a relatively low asking price means the vehicle will be inexpensive to maintain.

These figures should be treated as warnings about potential repair exposure, not predictions that every AMG GT will suffer a major failure. Repair costs can also vary depending on the specific fault, parts availability, labor rates, and whether components can be repaired or require replacement. Nevertheless, a specialist inspection and a thorough review of service records are sensible precautions before purchasing an early example.

Early Mercedes-AMG GT Models Carry Additional Ownership Risks

The 2016 and 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT models deserve particular scrutiny when shopping for a used example. These early production years carry elevated ownership risks, including transmission calibration issues. Buyers should establish whether applicable software updates have been performed and whether any transmission-related complaints were properly diagnosed and resolved. A clean-looking car is not necessarily evidence that its electronic systems and mechanical components are operating as intended.

A thorough pre-purchase inspection is therefore essential. Ideally, the car should be examined by a specialist familiar with Mercedes-AMG models, with particular attention paid to diagnostic fault codes, transmission operation, maintenance records, and evidence of previous repairs. Buyers should also check the vehicle identification number against official recall information and obtain documentation confirming that applicable recall work has been completed.

Later production years may be worth considering, but a 2019-or-newer example should not automatically be assumed to be trouble-free. Maintenance quality, prior use, mileage, and storage conditions can all influence a car’s present condition. Missing service records or unexplained warning lights should prompt further investigation, regardless of model year. Taking these precautions before purchase can help buyers identify potential problems while they still have the opportunity to negotiate or walk away.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Still Delivers Serious V8 Performance

The appeal of the first-generation Mercedes-AMG GT goes beyond its falling market value. The base 2017 model features a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 456 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, giving it the performance credentials expected from a premium German sports car. Its long hood, rear-set cabin, and muscular proportions also give it an exotic appearance that distinguishes it from more conventional performance coupes.

When new, the AMG GT occupied a considerably more expensive market segment than its current used-market prices suggest. Its combination of a hand-crafted performance character, a potent V8, and distinctive styling made it an appealing alternative to established sports-car rivals. Today, early examples offer enthusiasts an opportunity to experience that character without paying anything close to the original new-car price.

That accessibility is a major part of the GT’s appeal. Buyers can enjoy a high-performance coupe with genuine supercar presence and substantial power for a fraction of its original cost. For enthusiasts who value engine character, dramatic styling, and the experience of driving an exclusive performance machine, the early AMG GT remains an intriguing proposition. Its specifications help explain why the car continues to attract attention even as its market value has declined.

Is The Mercedes-AMG GT A Better Bargain Than The Porsche 911?

An early Mercedes-AMG GT coupe priced around $50,000 to $55,000 can look tempting, but buyers need to consider whether they could comfortably absorb a major unexpected expense. Having sufficient funds set aside for specialist maintenance is therefore an important part of deciding whether the AMG GT represents genuine value.

For enthusiasts who prioritize the character of a twin-turbocharged V8 and the distinctive experience of owning an AMG sports car, the Mercedes can still make sense. However, buyers should approach the purchase with a realistic budget and carefully assess the car’s condition and service history before committing.

The Porsche 911 presents a different proposition. Losing only 17.1% of its value over five years, the 911 is more attractive to buyers concerned about depreciation. That does not automatically make every 911 the better purchase, since model, specification, condition, and maintenance history all affect ownership costs and resale prospects.

Ultimately, the Mercedes suits buyers who value its particular driving character and can accommodate the financial risks, while the Porsche makes the stronger case for those prioritizing value retention.
