The Daily Brief wraps up the biggest stories and our exclusive reporting on the auto industry and car culture.

It’s getting tougher and tougher to identify “new” cars and trucks in the present era of slowly evolving, highly modular platforms. Take the 2027 Ford F-150, for instance. The 14th-generation was “new” in 2021 and has received incremental upgrades since. Now, Ford’s half-ton pickup is getting another round of updates for the upcoming model year.

Don’t worry; you won’t get whiplash. While there are some big changes for 2027, they aren’t particularly far-reaching. The big stories here are mostly found under the hood and behind the dash, though the XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum trims got a little bit of a facelift, and a couple of new wheel options to boot. Without further ado, let’s dive in.

The most important change to the 2027 F-150 will be obvious when it comes time to choose your engine. Ford shook up the hierarchy by eliminating both the naturally aspirated V6 and the 2.7-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V6. They’ve been replaced by one new engine: a 3.0-liter EcoBoost that doesn’t make any more power (325 horses) or torque (400 pound-feet) than the old 2.7-liter unit, but drives a little nicer, Ford says, since it doesn’t have to work quite as hard to do the same thing.

As has been the case since the light-duty Power Stroke diesel was eliminated from the F-150 lineup, the top towing option in the half-ton world is the 3.5-liter EcoBoost, which returns with the same 400 hp and 500 lb-ft it had before. The same goes for the Coyote V8 (400 hp and 410 lb-ft), the PowerBoost Hybrid (430 hp and 570 lb-ft), the high-output EcoBoost (450 hp and 510 lb-ft), and the Raptor R’s monster 5.2-liter supercharged V8 (720 horsepower and 640 lb-ft). Sorry, Raptor fans: Ford won’t dethrone the TRX in 2027.

But the good news? For the first time since 2023, the Platinum and King Ranch can once again be ordered with the V8. The EcoBoost is no longer the only option for non-hybrid buyers. And while Ford didn’t add anything to the Tremor or the Raptor, both benefit from new, low-feature packages that shave thousands off their respective sticker prices—and give enthusiasts a canvas on which to paint their masterpieces.

On the technology front, Ford says more than 75% of F-150 owners tow something at least occasionally. Since the company has been pushing its BlueCruise driving suite pretty hard, it should come as no surprise that it’s now capable of hands-free towing. You still can’t take your eyes off the road, of course, and the towing feature does not yet support automatic, hands-free lane changes, but on certain mapped routes, 2027 F-150s equipped with BlueCruise (all of them; not just a premium subset) will ship with this tech enabled (provided you have an active BlueCruise subscription; higher trims come with a complimentary trial period).

The other addition to the 2027 F-150 lineup is Carhartt. Carrying on the tradition started with Super Duty, the package blends popular F-150 equipment choices with Carhartt’s unique aesthetic. Outside, you get Lobo headlamps and a Tremor hood and running boards. Inside, you get signature two-tone upholstery, all-weather floor mats, and some other exclusive trim accents. The price tag for all of that? $4,195 (on top of an XLT SuperCrew of course). Just think how much closer to a Raptor you could get with that much cash.

The 2027 Ford F-150 is available to order now, but Ford cautions that Carhartt deliveries won’t begin until early 2027. Stay tuned for more on delivery timing.
