There are few better ways to understand Gordon Murray’s influence on the modern supercar than to put the McLaren F1, McLaren P1, and Gordon Murray Automotive T.50 together in one place, which is exactly what happens when Jay Leno welcomes fellow collector Dan Heard for this remarkable gathering. The 1995 McLaren F1 remains the centerpiece of Murray’s legacy, combining a 627-horsepower 6.1-liter BMW-built naturally aspirated V12 with a six-speed manual transmission, a central driving position, and a remarkably low curb weight by modern supercar standards. The 2014 McLaren P1 represents a very different chapter, using a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 paired with an electric motor to generate 903 horsepower through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Yet despite their radically different approaches, both cars share the same underlying obsession with engineering, performance, and creating something far beyond an ordinary exotic. Leno and Heard also dig into some entertaining McLaren F1 ownership history, including the story of an infamous “secret switch,” giving the video the kind of enthusiast-to-enthusiast flavor that makes seeing these cars together feel particularly special.

Then there is the GMA T.50, a machine that feels almost rebellious in an era increasingly defined by turbochargers, electrification, heavy batteries, and enormous horsepower figures. Its 3.9-liter Cosworth naturally aspirated V12 sends power through a six-speed manual gearbox and can spin all the way to an astonishing 12,100 rpm, while the entire car weighs only about 2,174 pounds. The numbers are impressive, but they almost become secondary once Leno gets the T.50 onto the open road. The sound is absolutely intoxicating, building from a sharp mechanical growl into a soaring, almost racing-engine shriek as that Cosworth V12 climbs toward five-digit engine speeds. It is the sort of soundtrack that instantly explains why Murray has remained so committed to light weight, natural aspiration, and driver involvement instead of simply chasing headline horsepower. Seeing the F1, P1, and T.50 together illustrates three different eras of extreme performance, but hearing the T.50 at full voice makes a convincing argument that the old-school formula of a lightweight chassis, manual transmission, and screaming V12 still has a magic that technology alone cannot replace.
