The Ford Maverick has quietly become one of the shrewdest value propositions in the American truck market — and the used-car numbers are starting to reflect it. The compact pickup sold over 155,051 units last year, which is another year-on-year increase, and it shows no signs of losing momentum. For buyers eyeing the used market, that popularity cuts both ways: demand is high, but so are prices. If you’ve been waiting for a deal on a first-model-year 2022 Maverick, here’s where things actually stand.

Now that the truck is several years into its life cycle, buying used and saving a few thousand bucks over new sounds like a reasonable plan. The catch is that these pickups have turned out to be slow depreciators in their first few years, so you might want to hold off just a little bit longer. Here’s what you need to know.

Ford Maverick Prices Aren’t Dropping Anytime Soon

Entering 2026, the first model year Ford Maverick (2022) continues to exhibit remarkably low depreciation for a four-year-old vehicle, holding an overall market average of roughly $20,000 to $23,500 depending on trim and options.

Driven by sustained consumer demand for affordable hybrid pickups and steady price increases on newer models, the initial 2022 inventory retains a surprisingly strong portion of its original value. Base XL models typically list between $17,500 and $20,500 assuming standard mileage, while the mid-tier XLT trim fetches between $20,000 and $23,500, especially when equipped with the highly sought-after 2.5L Hybrid powertrain or FX4 Off-Road package. Fully loaded Lariat trims sit at the top of the spectrum, trading from $22,500 up to $26,000.

Because brand-new Maverick starting sticker prices have steadily climbed higher over recent model years, budget-conscious buyers consistently turn to the pre-owned market, effectively keeping used inventory scarce. Combined with low typical maintenance costs and steady fuel-economy ratings, the debut 2022 Ford Maverick remains one of the highest-value-retaining compact trucks on the market today.

The Ford Maverick Has Proven To Be Fairly Low Maintenance

Whether a pickup is one, two, three, or 20 years old, you want to know it’s built to go the distance. The Maverick has proven to be a trooper in its first few years on the road. RepairPal estimates an annual maintenance cost of just $775, with the following accounting for the most expensive common repairs.

    • Turbocharger oil line replacement: $931–$1,341
    • Fuel evaporative canister replacement: $394–$452
    • Backup warning system sensor replacement: $304–$349
    • Wheel hub assembly replacement: $299–$349
    • Camshaft position sensor replacement: $77–$110

The 2023 Ford Maverick Is Actually More Problematic Than The 2022 Ford Maverick

According to CarComplaints, the most troubled iteration of the Ford Maverick so far is actually the 2023 model year. This is a bit unusual, since it’s typically the first model year of any generation that carries the most problems, as automakers work through early production bugs. The 2023 Maverick has seven complaints on file, while the 2022 Maverick has just four on the record.

The Maverick’s most worrying issue comes down to a single complaint for surging and lurching, with the driver reporting the problem at 31,000 miles but not including details on the cause or the fix. The NHTSA shows a number of powertrain complaints regarding similar issues, including one driver who reports the truck surging when going uphill.

The Maverick’s hybrid powertrain has seen six recalls for loss of drive power owing to software hiccups, mostly stemming from an undetected low battery, though it’s unclear whether there’s a direct connection between these recalls and the complaints for lurching and surging.

In any event, the truck has seen 25 recalls in total as of the time of this writing, so check the VIN, take it for a test drive, and make sure the previous owner has kept up with those outstanding issues.

What Else Will $26,000 Buy You?

We can roughly peg the ballpark price of a 2022 Ford Maverick at around $25,000 by averaging the fair market value across all three trims and rounding to the nearest thousand. We’ve already said the smart move is to wait and see what prices look like in a couple of months, but if you need something to drive right now, here’s what else you can grab in this price range, assuming a base model unless otherwise noted.

    Make And Model

    Fair Market Price

    2022 Toyota Tacoma

    $24,243

    2023 Chevrolet Colorado

    $24,030

    2021 Ford F-150 Super Cab

    $23,075

    2024 Hyundai Santa Cruz

    $26,037

    2019 Toyota Tundra Double Cab

    $26,215

If you’ve got anywhere from $22,000 to $26,000 to spend on a used pickup, a 2022 Maverick isn’t a bad choice — but you’ll be kicking yourself if you spend like-new money on a several-year-old truck only to see the price drop sharply a few months later, especially when you could have put the same dollars toward a similarly aged F-150 or Tacoma, or simply bought a brand-new Maverick for not much more. We put this pickup at the top of our cheap trucks list for a reason, after all.
