Program aims to build New Brunswick’s EV service workforce

New Brunswick Community College is accepting applications for a new cohort of its Electric Vehicle Automotive Service Technician microcredential program, offering automotive technicians an opportunity to develop skills in high-voltage diagnostics and electric vehicle repair as EV adoption continues to grow.

The next cohort begins in September and is aimed at licensed automotive service technicians and apprentices who have completed at least Block 3 training. Participants must also be able to attend in-person training sessions held in Fredericton, Moncton or Saint John.

The program is being offered as part of ongoing efforts to help prepare New Brunswick’s automotive workforce for the increasing number of hybrid and electric vehicles entering the market. Industry demand for technicians with EV-specific skills has grown as dealerships and independent repair facilities look to expand their ability to service electrified vehicles.

The 12-week program consists of 90 hours of training delivered through a combination of online evening classes and hands-on shop sessions held every second Saturday, allowing participants to continue working while completing the course.

NBCC says successful graduates will receive certification and will be qualified to safely diagnose, service and repair hybrid and electric vehicles, including working with high-voltage systems.

A key feature of the program is that it is fully funded, meaning accepted participants can complete the training at no cost. However, enrollment is limited and admission is competitive.

The microcredential reflects a broader trend across Canada’s automotive industry as colleges, manufacturers and industry organizations expand EV-focused training opportunities to address a growing skills gap. As vehicle electrification accelerates, both employers and technicians are increasingly seeking specialized training in battery systems, high-voltage safety procedures and electric drivetrain diagnostics.
