The 2027 Ram 1500 Rumble Bee launched to great fanfare, and for good reason. It’s the return of a proper street truck, far more than a body kit and lowering springs. The trucks feature the legendary 6.4-liter V8 in the 1500, along with a unique Quad Cab Short Bed configuration, a sporty suspension setup, and sticky tires. Despite all these upgrades, if straight-line speed is your top priority but you can’t afford the top SRT version, you might be better off skipping these new creations. Let us explain.

The 2027 model year pricing is only available for the Rumble Bees at the time of writing, so we are using 2026 pricing for the regular 1500 trims for comparison. 0–60 mph times used for comparison are provided by our prior testing of the Hurricane inline-six-powered truck and by Ram for the Rumble Bee models.

    Comparing Performance

    2027 Ram 1500 Rumble BeeRam

First, let’s compare the performance of the Rumble Bees to that of the Hurricane inline-six-powered Ram 1500. Of course, the top SRT Rumble Bee can’t be beat, thanks to its 777-hp supercharged Hellcat V8. However, its $95,000 starting price also can’t be matched in the regular 1500 range, although the Tungsten trim comes fairly close at $88,800 before the destination and delivery fees of $2,795 on all 1500s.

When we go down to the more comparable 6.4-liter and 5.7-liter Rumble Bees, though, the situation changes, with these Rumble Bees being the straight-line losers. The 470-horsepower, 6.4-liter V8 only does a 5.2-second 0-60 mph time, and the 5.7-liter, 395-horsepower version does an even worse 6.1-second 0-60 time.

Compare those figures with the High-Output Tungsten Ram we tested, which posted a 4.7-second time. Even the standard-output Hurricane-powered 1500 matches the 6.4-liter V8, posting an identical 5.2-second 0-60 mph time in the Big Horn we evaluated, not to mention trouncing the 5.7 by nearly a full second.

The main reason is torque, with the Hurricane inline-six packing two turbos to produce more twist at lower RPMs. The 5.7-liter V8 produces 410 lb-ft of torque, while the 6.4-liter increases the figure to 455 lb-ft. Even the standard-output Hurricane beats that by 14 lb-ft, and the high-output version provides a big jump to 521 lb-ft of torque. Plus, owners get 1-2 MPG better combined fuel economy with Hurricane-powered trucks, according to the EPA.

    Other Differentiators

    2027 Ram 1500 Rumble BeeRam

Yes, we know, Hemi fans, the V8 just sounds better. There’s no dispute that noise is a major differentiator among the Ram’s available powertrains. Some V8 fans have often made this factor the basis of their whole justification, despite other engines (or electric powertrains) being the better performers.

Some of the crowd that used to be all about straight-line performance is now joining in on what other enthusiasts of slower-performance vehicles have been saying for decades: it’s about the experience, not about winning races. The viewpoint lets people appreciate sporty vehicles of all performance levels, but who would have guessed that Mopar folks would end up embracing the same defense as Miata drivers?

Along with the sound, another valid reason to go for the V8 is for the difference in power delivery. Again, the Hurricane is stronger, but many people enjoy the experience of sending a tachometer needle to the redline. Owners need to push their V8s harder, too, to reach peak power levels and attempt to catch up to all those turbocharged vehicles and EVs that left them off the line.

Arguably the biggest reason to go Rumble Bee, aside from the engine, is the handling and the cooler look that come with those handling upgrades. Whether it’s the lower ride height and wider wheels and tires, or the proper wider fender flares required to cover them, there’s no argument that the Rumble Bees look way cooler than a regular Ram. And since lots of people buy based on looks alone, it’s likely a big selling point for the Rumble Bees, especially the base 5.7-liter version.

For buyers wanting to increase the truck’s handling prowess further, the Track Pack available on the 6.4-liter version adds larger brakes, even wider wheels and tires, and an adaptive air suspension, among other things. But don’t kid yourself, this is still a pickup truck, but it should be fairly transformative. We’re excited to try it out, but on paper, this is certainly a promising setup.

The final other differentiator is the cab configuration. If you happen to be a fan of the more stubby and shorter appearance of the Rumble Bees with their Quad Cab Short Bed configuration, these models are the only way to get that combo. But reactions to this new body style are certainly mixed among online commenters, so sticking with a Hurricane-powered 1500 (or the non-Rumble Bee V8 trims) lets you get the more traditional and practical Crew Cab configuration instead.

    Price Differences

Clearly, the fact that Ram can’t build Hemi-powered 1500s fast enough, despite charging a $1,500 price premium for worse performance, shows that a small premium is something Ram buyers are happy to pay to get the V8 in 2026. But let’s look at how the Rumble Bees compare in pricing to their faster turbocharged brethren.

The 5.7-liter Rumble Bee starts at a reasonable $59,995, plus that $2,795 destination fee, which puts it only about $2,000 higher than the Ford F-150 Lobo with its milder modifications. And, of course, those appearance and handling improvements certainly don’t make a comparison to the regular 1500 an apples-to-apples comparison. But for those still focused on straight-line performance, a comparable Ram 1500 Express, which is also available in the Quad Cab style, but only with the 6 ft. 4-inch bed, costs only $49,245 before destination, including the $1,695 option for the standard-output Hurricane engine.

This means you can have a faster Ram than the base Rumble Bee for over $10,000 less. And the acceleration matches the Rumble Bee 392, which is over $20,000 more expensive, with that one costing $69,995 before destination. It bears repeating that customers can get a lot of great upgrades for the extra coin, but when comparing these strictly on acceleration, the Hurricane trucks are the far better value.

Which One Is Best For You?

It should be pretty clear at this point which one is the right choice for you, but let’s lay it out. For enthusiasts who prioritize red-light drag races, a more laid-back daily driving experience thanks to boatloads of low-end torque, a more ordinary appearance that blends in, and/or the best power-per-dollar value, the Hurricane-powered Rams are easily the better way to go.

For those that want to stand out from the crowd, both in volume and in styling, the Rumble Bees should be the right pick for you, provided you’ve got the extra cash. It’s also the better pick for those that actually do sporty driving beyond straight roads, where the improved handling capabilities can be enjoyed and put to good use.

    2027 Ram 1500 Rumble BeeRam

For those that want it all, the best performance and the best styling, the Rumble Bee SRT is the only choice, assuming you’ve got the 95 grand (plus destination) that it takes to get one. If not, you’ve at least got some time to save. While the 5.7-liter Rumble Bees arrive at dealers this fall, the 6.4-liter version and the SRT won’t be arriving until sometime in the first half of 2027. But just remember, unless you go big with that SRT, your Rumble Bee will either be slower or just barely as fast as a Hurricane-powered Ram that you can get for far less, and at a healthy discount, right now.
