- The Denza Z electric supercar began pre-sales in China on Monday, with a starting price of 680,000 yuan ($100,300).
- The supercar’s move to the Chinese market after its UK debut shows BYD is using high-performance technology to enhance Denza’s brand image.
Global pre-orders for Denza Z, the electric supercar from BYD (HKEX: 1211) premium brand Denza, have exceeded 1,000 units, offering an early response to the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker’s high-performance bet.
Denza said on Weibo on Tuesday that cumulative domestic and overseas pre-orders for Denza Z had exceeded 1,000 units after 24 hours of pre-sales in China.
While the order volume is still not enough to indicate final delivery performance, it shows Denza Z has gained attention among high-performance EV buyers.
For BYD, the model is not just a sales product, but also a showcase for its electric drive, chassis and smart vehicle capabilities.
Denza Z began pre-sales in China on Monday and is offered in 3 variants. The Coupe hardtop has a pre-sales price of 680,000 yuan ($100,300), the Spider convertible is priced at 780,000 yuan, and the Racing track version is priced at 1.18 million yuan. The model is planned to be officially launched in the fourth quarter.
The car made its global debut last week at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK.
In the UK market, the Coupe hardtop starts at 142,900 pounds ($191,410), while the Spider convertible and Racing track versions are priced at 159,900 pounds and 172,900 pounds, respectively.
The starting price in China is significantly lower than that in the UK. The gap could help Denza attract high-performance EV buyers in its home market and compete for attention with models including the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra and Porsche 911.
Denza Z was led by renowned automotive designer Wolfgang Egger. The car adopts a low-slung widebody stance and a streamlined design, with extensive use of aerodynamic components to reinforce its supercar positioning.
Performance is the core selling point of Denza Z. The model is powered by a tri-motor all-wheel-drive system consisting of 1 front motor and 2 rear motors, with the 3 motors having peak outputs of 500 kW, 340 kW and 340 kW, respectively. The system has a combined peak output of 1,180 kW (1,582 hp).
The Racing track version can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 1.96 seconds and has a designed top speed of 350 km/h. The Coupe hardtop and Spider convertible can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.25 seconds and 2.3 seconds, respectively.
Denza said Denza Z is the first electric supercar to feature BYD’s e3 technology and the first electric supercar equipped with the DiSus-M body control system.
The e3 technology enables tri-motor independent drive and dual-motor independent rear-wheel steering, and is one of BYD’s key technologies in intelligent vehicle control. DiSus-M is used for body control to improve posture stability in high-performance driving scenarios.
The car is also equipped with China’s first full-stack in-house developed steer-by-wire system, removing the mechanical hard connection in traditional steering systems. The design gives chassis control greater flexibility and further strengthens Denza Z’s technology label.
Denza Z is also BYD’s latest attempt to expand its premium product matrix. BYD has already demonstrated its technical capabilities in the supercar market through the Yangwang U9, while Denza Z’s price and brand positioning are closer to a high-performance segment that may support a larger sales scale.
The Denza Z9S measures 5,090 mm in length and offers two powertrain versions producing 320 kW (429 hp) and 370 kW.
