The Czech brand Skoda is one of the less glamorous members of the Volkswagen Group family of brands. When a company is under the same umbrella as Audi, Bentley, Porsche, and Lamborghini, there’s not much reason to focus on standing out among performance vehicles. In Europe, Skoda focuses on offering mainstream cars, using VW Group platforms and engines, often at lower prices than their comparable Volkswagen-branded siblings.

While Skoda has decades of history in the World Rally Championship, many folks still don’t associate the brand with performance. However, a new video shows that the new Skoda Elroq vRS can be quite quick in a straight line. In fact, if someone driving one happens to line up next to a Lamborghini Countach at a stoplight, the Skoda owner has nothing to fear.

The Skoda Elroq vRS Takes On 1980s Icons

For an unusual marketing stunt, Skoda challenged an Elroq vRS against a trio of 1980s icons: a 1989 Ferrari Testarossa, a Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary, and a Porsche 944 Turbo. While the Elroq vRS is an EV, it’s going up against a pair of Italians with 12-cylinder engines, and though it’s a four-cylinder, the 944 Turbo is among the early performance machines to embrace forced induction.

As context, the Elroq vRS is the performance version of Skoda’s electric two-row crossover. It packs a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain producing 335 horsepower and 402 pound-feet of torque. According to the official specs, it can hit 62 miles per hour in 5.4 seconds, making this model the fastest-accelerating production Skoda ever.

The video highlights the instant power delivery from electric motors. The Ferrari and Lamborghini make more power than the Skoda, but they are limited by five-speed manual gearboxes that require shifting to keep the engine in its ideal power band. The Elroq vRS doesn’t have to shift and has access to its full power output from the start.

However, the Skoda’s top speed is just 111 miles per hour, so while the Elroq vRS is quicker than these 1980s icons over this distance, it’s not faster than them. Over a longer run, the three sports cars would eventually pass the Skoda and leave it for dead. But in the real world where stoplights and speed limits exist, this family SUV definitely has an advantage.

Compared to a regular Elroq, the vRS comes with an illuminated grille, black exterior trim, 21-inch wheels, sport seats, and interior elements with microsuede upholstery. It’s never going to turn heads like a Countach or Testarossa, though. In the United Kingdom, the vRS starts at £46,970 ($63,000 at current exchange rates), while the base model is £33,970 ($46,000).

The Elroq vRS packs an 82-kilowatt-hour battery that provides a range of up to 344 miles and supports DC fast charging at up to 185 kilowatts. Going from 10% to 80% takes 29 minutes. Europe’s WLTP range test indicates the Elroq vRS can travel 344 miles on a charge.

“What makes the Elroq vRS so exciting is that it demonstrates how far automotive technology has progressed over the decades. It delivers acceleration that rivals cars once considered unattainable performance icons, while also offering the practicality, comfort and usability customers expect from a modern Škoda.”

    – Pietro Panarisi, head of PR and communications at Skoda UK

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

Performance is relative. In the 1980s, cars like the Countach and Testarossa were the most exotic machines on the road. While they still look striking today, their powerful combustion engines are no longer the quickest way to get around. Electric motors produce peak power immediately, and modern powertrain management systems ensure the output reaches the road as efficiently as possible, with no wheel spin to waste a kilowatt.

Today, the whole family can get around in a comfortable EV, while the driver has the acceleration to put old-school supercars to shame.
