    Automotive

Mitsubishi is getting serious about the growing demand for adventure-ready SUVs, revealing the new 2028 Outlander Diamond Trail Edition ahead of its official debut at the 2026 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Unlike the existing Trail Edition models that primarily focus on appearance, the Diamond Trail brings meaningful off-road upgrades to Mitsubishi’s popular three-row crossover. With more aggressive styling, all-terrain tires, improved approach and departure angles, and specialized traction technology, Mitsubishi is looking to attract buyers who want something a little more capable than the typical family SUV. The reveal also marks Mitsubishi’s first official appearance at SEMA since 2012.

Visually, the Outlander Diamond Trail Edition certainly looks the part. Mitsubishi has fitted a redesigned matte-black grille, darkened headlight accents, wider fender flares, beefier body cladding, and raised roof rails. Unique 18-inch black alloy wheels wrapped in Nexen Roadian ATX all-terrain tires give the SUV additional grip when venturing off pavement. More importantly, redesigned front and rear bumpers improve the approach angle to 20.5 degrees and departure angle to 23.1 degrees. Those figures represent noticeable improvements over the standard Outlander, making the Diamond Trail better suited for uneven terrain, rocky trails, and other obstacles that might otherwise leave an ordinary crossover scraping its bumpers.

Mitsubishi has also upgraded its Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system with a new Rock driving mode that reacts more quickly to wheelspin through enhanced braking intervention. Selecting the mode automatically activates Hill Descent Control, while a dedicated instrument display provides information such as steering angle, individual wheel slip, and traction control activity. The surround-view camera system can also remain active at speeds up to 18.6 mph, helping drivers navigate tighter trails. Inside, the Diamond Trail features water-resistant dark gray upholstery with khaki stitching, darker interior trim, and exclusive badging. Under the hood, the SUV is expected to retain the Outlander’s turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, with no plug-in hybrid version announced for this trim.

To showcase the SUV’s potential, Mitsubishi will bring three versions of the Diamond Trail Edition to SEMA, scheduled for November 3 through November 6, 2026. One will feature factory accessories and a roof cargo box, while another receives a 1.5-inch suspension lift, upgraded tires, auxiliary lighting, a roof rack, and a matching adventure trailer. The wildest example features a 2.5-inch lift, Method wheels, aggressive BFGoodrich tires, a rooftop tent, and additional off-road equipment. Mitsubishi will also display a Ralliart-prepared Triton pickup, a Delica D:5 minivan, and a modified Outlander Sport Trail Edition. Pricing and an exact U.S. on-sale date have yet to be announced, although the Diamond Trail is positioned as a 2028 model-year offering.

    Automotive Addicts Take:

We think Mitsubishi is making a smart move by doubling down on the increasingly popular rugged SUV segment, especially considering the success of Toyota’s TRD Off-Road models, Honda’s TrailSport lineup, and Subaru’s Wilderness trims. There’s clearly an audience willing to pay extra for adventurous styling backed by actual capability, and Mitsubishi has an opportunity to capture some of those buyers with a properly equipped Outlander. The Diamond Trail appears to be more than just another appearance package, which is exactly what Mitsubishi needs to help the Outlander stand apart. We could see this becoming a compelling alternative to some of the segment’s established off-road-inspired favorites.
