    Audi

Audi is making a massive commitment to the American automotive market, announcing plans to invest approximately $4 billion in its first U.S. manufacturing facility, located in Georgia. The German luxury automaker is setting its sights on the Middle Georgia Mega Site near Perry, where it expects to create roughly 4,500 jobs and establish one of its largest production operations anywhere in the world. The facility will have the capacity to produce up to 200,000 vehicles annually, primarily premium SUVs developed with American buyers in mind. Site preparation is expected to begin in 2027, with construction following in 2028 and full production targeted for 2031. It’s a significant milestone for Audi, which has spent decades competing in the American luxury market without a dedicated U.S. assembly plant.

The decision makes plenty of business sense, especially as imported vehicles continue to face pressure from tariffs and shifting trade policies. By producing SUVs on American soil, Audi can better control costs, strengthen its supply chain, and respond more quickly to the demands of U.S. consumers. The company has not officially confirmed the complete vehicle lineup for the Georgia facility, but larger SUVs such as the Audi Q7, Q8, and Q9 are natural candidates given the popularity of spacious luxury utility vehicles in North America. Audi CEO Gernot Döllner emphasized that the investment represents much more than simply opening another factory. The larger objective is to establish a stronger American presence, improve competitiveness, and finally capture more of the luxury market that Audi believes it has yet to fully capitalize on.

Interestingly, the announcement came with a dose of political controversy after President Donald Trump revealed the investment during a campaign rally in Perry, Georgia, on October 24. Döllner joined Trump on stage, an appearance that drew sharp criticism from Volkswagen Group Works Council Chairwoman Daniela Cavallo. She expressed embarrassment over the executive’s participation in a political rally and questioned whether his appearance violated Audi’s own guidelines regarding political neutrality ahead of elections. Cavallo also criticized Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume over the company’s involvement in the event, arguing that corporate leadership had allowed itself to become part of a political spectacle. Döllner defended his decision to appear alongside Trump, explaining that the investment followed months of negotiations and that accepting an invitation from the American president demonstrated respect for the office and the country where Audi intends to invest. The disagreement adds an unusual political dimension to what would otherwise be a straightforward celebration of American manufacturing investment.

For Georgia, the economic implications are substantial. Governor Brian Kemp welcomed Audi’s decision, pointing to the state’s growing reputation as a destination for major automotive manufacturers and suppliers. The Middle Georgia location offers an established logistics network, access to a skilled workforce, and plenty of room for future expansion. Beyond the 4,500 direct jobs, the project could generate additional opportunities for parts suppliers, transportation companies, and local businesses supporting the new manufacturing operation. Georgia has already become an increasingly important hub for automotive production, and securing Audi further reinforces its position in the industry. The state’s workforce development programs will also play a role in preparing employees for the advanced manufacturing technologies expected at the facility.

Ultimately, Audi’s Georgia investment signals a major shift in how the luxury automaker plans to compete in the United States. Rather than relying almost entirely on vehicles shipped from overseas or assembled in Mexico, Audi is preparing to build a substantial manufacturing foundation directly in one of its most important markets. There are still questions surrounding which models will roll off the assembly line, how the factory will accommodate future electric vehicles, and whether additional investments will follow. Audi has already suggested that more U.S. announcements could be on the horizon. While the political controversy surrounding the reveal may grab headlines for now, the bigger story is that Audi is putting billions behind its ambitions to become a stronger player in America, and Georgia stands to benefit considerably from that commitment.
