General Motors is reportedly preparing to make a significant change to its vehicle lineup by introducing hybrid versions of three of its most popular SUVs. According to a new report from Reuters, citing people familiar with the automaker’s plans, the Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, and Buick Enclave are all expected to receive hybrid powertrains as GM rethinks its heavy investment in fully electric vehicles. The three mechanically related midsize SUVs would reportedly be built at GM’s Lansing, Michigan, assembly facility, where their gasoline-powered counterparts are already produced. While GM hasn’t officially announced the specific models or a production timeline, the move could finally address a glaring omission in the company’s U.S. lineup.

The decision comes as American consumers increasingly gravitate toward hybrids, particularly with gasoline prices remaining a concern and many buyers still hesitant to make the jump to a fully electric vehicle. GM has largely stayed on the sidelines of the booming hybrid market, instead concentrating its resources on traditional gasoline engines and an expanding lineup of EVs. Meanwhile, competitors like Toyota and Honda have capitalized on the growing demand for fuel-efficient vehicles that don’t require plugging in. Reuters reports that GM’s U.S. market share slipped to 16.6% during the first nine months of 2026, compared with 17.4% during the same period last year. That decline adds pressure for GM to offer more choices in segments where its competitors have already established successful hybrid models.

GM CEO Mary Barra recently acknowledged the company’s changing direction during its third-quarter earnings call, confirming that hybrids are coming to multiple vehicle segments. Barra explained that the planned additions are already accounted for in the company’s engineering and investment plans, suggesting GM won’t need significant new spending to bring them to market. Dealers have also been pushing for hybrids, according to Reuters, arguing that the lack of gasoline-electric options has made it increasingly difficult to compete with rival brands. For buyers considering a three-row family SUV, a hybrid Traverse, Acadia, or Enclave could provide a welcome combination of improved fuel economy, everyday practicality, and potentially better performance without the range and charging considerations associated with a fully electric model.

There are still plenty of unanswered questions, including which engines GM will use, how much additional power or fuel efficiency the hybrids might deliver, and when they could reach dealerships. Pricing also remains unknown, and GM has yet to confirm whether these vehicles will use conventional hybrid or plug-in hybrid systems. Nevertheless, the broader strategy makes considerable sense. We’ve seen firsthand how effective hybrid powertrains can be in larger family vehicles, especially when buyers want improved efficiency without sacrificing space, comfort, or convenience. GM may be arriving late to this part of the market, but giving customers more powertrain choices could be exactly what the company needs to regain momentum against Toyota, Honda, and other increasingly competitive automakers.
