When it launched for the 2025 model year, the Volvo EX30 in its Twin Motor Performance trim was the quickest-accelerating car you could get for under $50,000, with 422 horsepower and a 3.4-second 0-60 mph time, thanks to its small size but strong dual electric motor setup.
Because it was A) an EV and B) a Volvo–the last brand anyone would expect to make the drag racing bargain of the 2020s–no enthusiasts took it seriously, if they even knew it existed. Here in 2026, their under-the-radar status, combined with just one year of EV depreciation, makes them an even better performance bargain and sleeper that’s now as affordable as a Miata.

We’ve already gone over the headline stats, but yes, for the same money as a 181-hp Miata, you can get well over double the horsepower, plus 400 lb-ft of torque and a 3.4-second 0-60 mph time that’ll embarrass a whole slew of performance cars from not long ago. Even in 2026, that time matches the also-electric and now even more expensive Dodge Charger Daytona Scat Pack.
In a little Volvo crossover. It’s so unexpected that you could probably make a solid side-gig out of traveling each weekend from one drag strip to the next and racing for cash, where you’d likely get the last laugh every time after undoubtedly enduring much heckling upon arrival.
Speaking of traveling, though, one slight compromise of these is the slightly smaller battery size of 69 kWh, a necessity to fit the tiny dimensions and hit the affordable price point. It’ll do “up to” 253 miles, which is probably optimistic and certainly will be less if you indulge in that performance. The good news is that with the battery being as small as it is – plus a decent 153 kW peak DC charge rate – Volvo quotes a 10-80% charge time of just 28 minutes. Charge at the local mall, and the time will fly by while you spend the money you just made at the drag strip.
Beyond just the acceleration, the EX30 is also a great handler. With its compact dimensions and a low-for-an-EV curb weight of 4,151 lbs, combined with all-wheel drive and the usual low center of gravity that EVs have, you have a pretty good recipe. I lived with one for a week and found it genuinely fun in the corners. Its main handling shortcoming was front-end grip due to the touring-focused all-season tires.
But even that quality meant the EX30 could squirm around with a little prodding, before the overly aggressive driver-assist systems intervened. A simple tire swap to a sportier tire would raise the performance level of the EX30 even further for those approaching this as a potential hot hatch. No, it won’t be as pure a driving experience as a Miata, but it can still be fun in its own way.

The exterior and interior of the EX30 are where this car’s main compromises are found. The exterior design, while inoffensive and potentially even attractive to some, doesn’t look particularly sporty or signal the performance capabilities of the car in any way, with nothing added on the outside when you opt for the Twin Motor Performance trim other than one-inch-larger wheels.
Those who want a slightly more aggressive look can go for the Cross Country variant, which was oddly only offered in America for a couple of months before mysteriously and quietly being pulled from the market (along with the regular EX30), likely for the same new regulatory reason that Polestar abruptly quit America.
That Cross Country trim added some fender flares and blacked-out elements front and rear to help it stand out visually at least a little more. You also got all-terrain tires and a tiny 0.75 inches of extra ground clearance to add up to a meager 7.5 inches of ground clearance total. Subaru need not worry.

No matter which version of the EX30 you get, they’re all small, compact things. Even a 2026 Volkswagen Golf GTI is 2.2 inches longer. Those small dimensions lead to the biggest compromise of the EX30, the cramped interior and its interesting choices.
The main sticking points are the lack of a gauge cluster, only two window switches up front (located in the center console), with a toggle for the rear windows, and a very cramped back seat that doesn’t even have cup or bottle holders. All concessions of the aggressive cost-cutting Volvo felt were necessary to keep the car at the price point and profit margins they needed.
While Tesla has gotten away with no gauge cluster for years now, it’s more surprising coming from Volvo, a safety-first company. Having to look over at the middle screen to see your speed and safety information doesn’t seem like the safest choice. It’s even more annoying when the driver monitoring sensor scolds you for looking over at it to get basic information or complete basic tasks.

The rest of the interior is largely acceptable, with quite nice materials overall, comfortable seats, and a quick and responsive touchscreen that, thankfully, has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Cargo space is decent as well, although it, too, is roughly 25% smaller than a GTI’s cargo hold. That cramped back seat is the main problem, though, unless you never bring more than one person with you. At 5’9″, I had only about a finger-width’s worth of knee room, so if your driver or rear passengers are any taller than that, the back seat is essentially unusable.
But whether those compromises are worth it comes down to a single question: exactly how little are you actually paying for all of this?

Bargains can be had on both used examples and the remaining inventory of new leftover 2025 and 2026 EX30s, since they haven’t been the hottest sellers. Excluding the cheaper and slower rear-wheel-drive base model, leftover 2025s are being advertised with discounts as much as $12,000 off, making a 3.4-second 0–60 mph time yours for just over $35,000.
2026s are about $9,000 off, starting in the $38,000 range, and that discount extends to the Cross Country variant as well at many dealers.
If you want an even bigger discount on the Volvo, you can get lightly used, clean title, no accident 2025s for a few grand less, with the cheapest example listed for just over $29,000. And that’s with just a year or less of depreciation. If steep EV depreciation continues, combined with the limited appeal of the EX30, primarily due to its size, expect these to continue to plummet in value, unless $4-plus gas is the new norm and people continue to flock to used EVs as they have this year.
You won’t find discounts like that on a new Miata–not even close–with most dealers only advertising discounts of about $1,000 or so, putting them in the low $30,000s for a bare-bones Sport trim. If you want a solid roof over your head, the more expensive Miata RF does see a few grand more in discounts in some places, but the cheapest new one online is still over $36,000.
There are a few used 2025 Miatas for slightly less than the Volvo, and the Miata has the advantage of 11 years on the market for its current generation that you can pull from for a cheaper one, but the point remains that the wildly faster EX30 can be had for about the same money as a comparably aged Miata.

Overall, the EX30 certainly won’t work for many people because of all the drawbacks listed above. But if you find yourself not being bothered by those negatives, the EX30 is one of the best straight-line performance bargains on the market right now, primarily because of how new it is.
Typically, with many performance bargains, several years of depreciation (and likely abuse) are needed before they become true bargains. But thanks to being an EV, and being so under-the-radar, very few people appreciate the EX30 for what it is, and the pricing (and sales) reflect that. But the added perks of top-notch Volvo safety, some pretty nice materials inside, and solid tech make them an even more compelling package for those who haven’t been turned off by the EX30’s other quirks.
If you’re one of the very few people who appreciate the EX30’s qualities and can live with the compromises it requires, you’ll have a unique, rare, and quirky little performance bargain with lots of life left in it. And if that or the 3.4-second 0-60 time doesn’t keep a smile on your face, seeing the look on everyone else’s when you rocket away in your unassuming little Volvo should certainly provide plenty of joy.
