The development of the first production ready mid-engine Corvette didn’t start after the C7 was completed, but nearly 50 years before that. Starting at the very beginning, in the 1950s, Zora Arkus-Duntov had every intention of building Corvettes with their engines aft in the body, but corporate big wigs almost never like the idea of building cars that don’t make money.
Arkus-Duntov never gave up. While the production versions were being designed, modeled, and later produced, mid-engine concepts were designed and developed in parallel with nearly every generation of Corvette. By 2019, his dream would be fulfilled with the C8 despite hardcore purists claiming it goes against the rulebook for Corvettes. Oh, how wrong they would be.

Only those in-the-know might have been privy to General Motors’ skunkworks led by Mr. Corvette himself, but the rest of the known universe knew the Corvette as America’s sports car. Built to tackle European exotics in style, power, and grace, the Corvette was one of a kind in a town known for putting big engines in big cars, but that doesn’t mean it abandoned its roots.
The C1 might have had a massive 3.8-liter straight-six under the hood, and the 1950s space-age styling cues that America was known for, but this was arguably the first American car to capture the same essence that European sports cars did. Harley Earl drew inspiration from the Jaguars and MG roadsters that many US soldiers were bringing back from Europe after the conclusion of World War II, and GM was sure to capture the market who wanted a cross between European looks and American power.
That type of thinking led the Corvette through seven generations of familiar, front-engine designs thanks to the car’s athletic grand touring roots. The formula for production Corvettes never changed after the 1955 model introduced V8-power to the nameplate, replacing the Blue Flame straight-six used in the 1953 and 1954 models. Every car since has been a V8, two-seat coupe or convertible that just happened to keep its engine in front of the cabin. There were no rules stating the Corvette had to look this way, it was simply the way things were done.
In 1959, the first mid-engine concept, dubbed CERV 1 (Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicle), was completed and fit for an intergalactic Grand Prix around Saturn’s icy rings. The open-wheel concept had zero resemblance to a road-going Corvette, but it was just to show the public what the team behind the Corvette could do when left to their own devices. As production models came and went, a team dedicated to building mid-engine Bizzaro Corvettes loosely based on production versions kept at it.
Engineering Hit A Wall: Why A Mid-Engine Design Was Truly Needed

There have been many Corvette models that pushed the boundaries of their platforms, the most iconic being the original ZR-1 and its Lotus-designed and Mercury Marine-built LT5 5.7-liter V8. Z06 models would follow for the C5, a performance nameplate that hadn’t seen the light of day since the 1960s, and the resurrection of the ZR1 nameplate for the C6 generation after only being used on the C4.
By 2006, the C6 Z06 was making 505 horsepower from its 7.0-liter LS7 V8, but if that wasn’t enough, the ZR1 launched in 2008 with a supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 producing 638 horsepower. It also had floors made of balsa wood and a starting price of $105,000, but that’s neither here nor there.
Right about then is when it would’ve been safe to assume going mid-engine would do more good than harm, but that’s not where GM caved and let engineers make a production version. The C7 pushed the envelope to the max with the Z06 and ZR1 models, which utilized a 650-horsepower supercharged 6.2 LT4 in the former and a fire-breathing 755-horsepower LT5 V8 in the latter.

By the time the ZR1 was released for 2019, the Corvette had effectively reached the peak of its abilities in stock form. Hennessey and others might have found ways to squeeze 1,000 ponies from the ZR1’s LT5, but GM wouldn’t be able to provide any more power to the rear wheels, especially if it was still using antiquated composite transverse leaf springs.
Even if the technology underpinning the C7 as a whole was the best version of old technology, it was still old tech. The entire point of the Corvette was to bring European looks and handling to America, and it did. But if it wanted to finally be “better” than what it was competing against—or finally offer more useable power at a massive discount—a new shape would be required to make it so, and thanks to the never-ending pet project that was the mid-engine Corvette, the answer was readily available.
The C8 Proved The Engineers Were Right

For the next-generation of Corvette, the engineers who sat waiting patiently in the wings were called into battle. Tadge Juchter, Executive Chief Engineer for Corvette, has been quoted many times before that he wanted the C7 to be the first production mid-engine Corvette, but financial strains on the company forced his hand back to the standard approach and the world received the C7 as the next logical step in Corvette evolution.
The missing link connecting the mid-engine concepts with reality was money, and after GM was back in the black for some time after the 2008 Financial Crisis, Juchter had the funding needed to make a six-decade-long dream a reality. Testing of mid-engine prototypes proved everything engineers knew the design would return. Better dynamics, traction, and overall performance were among the key areas where the Corvette was improved, giving the platform the bones it needed to be taken seriously by Ferrari, Lamborghini, and McLaren.
The first batch of C8 Stingrays packed 490–495 horsepower LT2 V8 engines mated to 8-speed automatic transmissions as standard, one of the other points of contention amongst Corvette purists. America’s sports car was putting up its strongest fight ever against Europe, but with it came sacrifices some fans just couldn’t adapt to. Many fans were surprised at Chevy’s decision to forego a manual gearbox, something that many higher-ups have since debunked when pressed by journalists and owners alike if one will be fitted to later C8 models.
Despite this, the C8 has achieved a higher sales average than the C7 did, which is also thanks to its new shape. The mid-engine platform has dropped the average age of a Corvette owner significantly, with GM claiming the Corvette is the number one sports car amongst the 35-and-under crowd. These are the enthusiasts who remember when the Z06 and ZR1 Corvette came out and thought they were cool, but still saw it as the same Corvette their father or grandfather would be interested in.
At the same time, the Ferrari 458 was revealed, and no other new car could come close to the elegance and modernity crafted by Pininfarina. A decade later, a less elegant but purposeful V8-powered mid-engine sports car could be picked up for $70,000 and backed by a GM warranty. Suddenly, the Corvette was something it had not been to a large portion of young enthusiasts: undeniably cool.
The Corvette Didn’t Abandon Its Heritage—It Fulfilled It
60 years elapsed between Arkus-Duntov’s first mid-engine prototype and the first production mid-engine Corvette. That engineers continued to develop prototypes in relative secrecy for so long is a testament to the passion the original team had for putting the engine behind the driver. When American astronauts weren’t practicing in their Northrop T-38 Talons, they were lining up on the runway in their $1 a month C2 and C3 Corvettes. Behind closed doors, GM had CERV II and Astro II prototypes resembling those T-38’s but had no plans to brand them Corvettes or bring them to market.
As the C3 Corvettes hit dealerships, the XP-895 mid-engine prototype was created and tested with a 4-rotor Wankel engine, which was later swapped for a small block V8. Later XP-897 GT prototypes continued with a Pininfarina-designed body and Porsche 914 bones, and a 6.2-liter—wait for it—4-rotor Wankel engine. Rotary engines would be done away with for prototypes and V8s were used in later examples, like CERV III, which looked almost like a Jaguar XJ220.
The C5 Corvette became the first one to resemble its CERV IV prototype, mainly because it was a front-engine test bed for the new 5.7-liter V8 and 6-speed manual, and four-wheel disk brakes used in production versions. The skunkworks would go dormant for the years following the C5, but the dream remained. Many of the original engineers who first pushed for mid-engine Corvettes in the 1960s never saw their work come to fruition, but their designs and prototypes live on today in the C8. It’s not the Corvette many are used to, even after six years on the market, but it’s the one that finally got the Corvette to compete at the level first planned for it.
