Toyota’s performance division may be getting very serious about its next sports car, and a short video from Fuji Speedway has added more fuel to the rumor mill. A prototype recently filmed lapping the Japanese circuit appears to show a low, two-door Toyota sports car with aggressive bodywork, a burbly exhaust note, and what sounds like a very engaging drivetrain. Toyota has not confirmed what the car is, but the footage lines up closely with ongoing reports of a new mid-engine GR model that could revive either the MR2 or Celica name.

The car in the clip appears far more developed than earlier test mules spotted in rally-style environments. It has slim headlights, broad fenders, a large hood vent, a compact coupe profile, and taillights that look like they belong in Toyota’s current performance design language. While the video does not fully reveal where the engine sits, several recent reports point toward a mid-engine layout with all-wheel drive, which would immediately make this one of the most interesting Toyota performance projects in decades.

The powertrain speculation is just as exciting. Toyota has been developing a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine under the Gazoo Racing umbrella, and that engine is widely expected to serve as the heart of future GR performance models. In road-going form, output could reportedly land around 400 horsepower, while a more extreme competition or high-output version may push much closer to 600 horsepower. Some level of electrification has also been rumored, although nothing has been officially locked in.

What makes this story so compelling is the heritage behind the possible names. If Toyota brings back the MR2, the mid-engine layout would make perfect sense, since that formula defined the nameplate from the 1980s through the 2000s. If it becomes a Celica, Toyota would be taking a more radical approach by transforming a historically front-engine sports coupe into something much more exotic under the GR banner. Either way, the idea of Toyota building an in-house, all-wheel-drive, turbocharged sports car feels like exactly the kind of enthusiast project the brand has been leaning back into with GR Corolla, GR Supra, and GR86.

There is also a motorsports angle to watch. If this prototype is related to earlier test cars seen in rally environments, Toyota could reveal a competition version before the street car arrives. That would fit Gazoo Racing’s current playbook, where racing development and production-car credibility often feed into each other. A WRC-style or rally-bred version appearing as soon as 2027 would not be out of the question if the program is as far along as the latest footage suggests.

For now, Toyota fans should stay excited but cautious. The video is real, the prototype looks serious, and Toyota has already confirmed interest in developing a new mid-engine sports car, but the final name, production timing, powertrain details, and U.S. availability are still unknown. What is clear is that Toyota is no longer treating performance cars like side projects. If this mystery GR coupe becomes the next MR2, a reborn Celica, or something entirely new, it could become one of the most anticipated Japanese sports cars of the decade.
