Manual transmissions are becoming an endangered feature in the performance-car market, as automakers increasingly favor automatic gearboxes for their speed, efficiency, and convenience. For enthusiasts who value driver involvement, however, a clutch pedal and a six-speed shifter remain an important part of the experience.

BMW is among the manufacturers still catering to this audience, offering factory manual transmissions across several performance models for 2026. However, finding one requires careful consideration, as the stick shift is increasingly restricted to specific trims and rear-wheel-drive configurations, leaving buyers with fewer choices than they might expect.

    BMW M2

    Price: $70,850

The 2026 BMW M2 starts at $70,850, including destination, making it an appealing entry point into BMW M performance. The 3.0-liter S58 twin-turbocharged inline-six produces 473 hp, sent to the rear wheels through a standard six-speed manual transmission. Buyers who prefer convenience can choose the eight-speed automatic at no additional cost.

Unlike larger M models, the M2 packages its powertrain into a relatively compact two-door coupe, giving it a more concentrated, rear-wheel-drive sports-car character. BMW quotes a 0-60 mph time of 4.1 seconds for the manual version, demonstrating that choosing three pedals does not mean sacrificing serious acceleration.

The M2 also features an Active M Differential to help manage power delivery between the rear wheels. Its adaptive M suspension and performance-oriented chassis are designed to balance road comfort with sharper responses during spirited driving. The vehicle’s compact dimensions make it easier to place on a winding road than a larger performance sedan, without compromising the straight-line pace expected of an M car. For enthusiasts seeking a relatively accessible entry into BMW’s high-performance lineup, the M2 offers a compelling combination of power, agility, and driver involvement.

The engine also produces 406 lb-ft of torque, giving the M2 substantial pulling power across its rev range. Its combination of a short wheelbase, rear-wheel drive, and a standard manual transmission makes driver inputs an important part of managing the car’s performance, particularly when accelerating out of tight corners.

    BMW M3 Sedan

    Price: $80,650

The 2026 BMW M3 Sedan brings six-speed manual appeal to a four-door performance car, but buyers must choose carefully. The manual is reserved for the base, rear-wheel-drive model. Those opting for the M3 Competition or an all-wheel-drive xDrive version must accept the eight-speed automatic transmission. Under the hood, the standard M3 uses BMW’s 3.0-liter S58 twin-turbocharged inline-six, producing 473 hp. Its sedan body adds everyday practicality, with rear doors and a usable back seat, making it a compelling option for enthusiasts who need more versatility than a two-door coupe can provide.

The manual M3 also has a technical advantage for enthusiasts who enjoy being more involved in the driving process: BMW developed a launch-control function for its manual M3 and M4 models. This gives drivers a more structured way to manage standing starts, although real-world acceleration still depends on conditions, tires, and driver technique.

The M3’s starting price is $80,650 including the destination charge, but options, taxes, registration, and dealer fees can take the figure even higher. The M3’s appeal lies in combining everyday usability with a high-performance powertrain and a traditional six-speed gearbox. For drivers who want a manual without giving up four-door practicality, the base rear-wheel-drive sedan remains a distinctive choice within BMW’s current lineup.

    BMW M4 Coupe

    Price: $83,550

The 2026 BMW M4 Coupe starts at $83,550, including destination, making it the most expensive of the three S58-powered manual M cars in this ranking. Its 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six produces 473 hp, matching the output of the M2 and base M3 Sedan. The M4’s appeal instead lies in its sleek two-door body and more substantial grand-touring presence, offering a different take on the same core performance formula. For buyers who prioritize coupe styling over the M3’s rear-door practicality, the price premium reflects a different body style rather than an increase in engine output.

Transmission choice is just as important as the trim level. The six-speed manual is available only with the base rear-wheel-drive M4 Coupe, while the Competition and xDrive versions use an eight-speed automatic. The M4 Convertible is also automatic-only, so buyers should check the exact body style and trim before purchasing. This makes the standard coupe the specific configuration to seek out, rather than assuming every M4 offers the same transmission options. Although its starting price puts it at the top of this comparison, the M4 remains an appealing choice for enthusiasts who want a manual BMW M car with coupe proportions.

The M4’s manual configuration also gives buyers access to the same core engine output as the less expensive M2 and M3, without requiring them to move to a higher-output Competition model. For shoppers who value the coupe’s design and are committed to a manual gearbox, this makes the base version the key model to investigate.

The Toyota GR Supra Manual Is A BMW Alternative With A Toyota Badge

    Price: $59,595

The manual Toyota GR Supra deserves a mention, even if it doesn’t exactly fita ranking focused specifically on BMW-badged cars. Developed through the BMW-Toyota partnership, the fifth-generation Supra shares key hardware with BMW, including the 3.0-liter turbocharged B58 inline-six and elements of its underlying platform and drivetrain.

The six-speed manual makes it a genuine enthusiast option, but it lacks the M-specific identity and S58 engine found in the M2, M3, and M4. For buyers determined to own a manual BMW, the Supra is therefore an alternative in engineering terms, rather than a substitute in brand identity.

The Supra’s manual transmission was specifically engineered for the car in collaboration with transmission supplier ZF. Toyota developed a dedicated shift lever and clutch, along with an Intelligent Manual Transmission system that can match engine revs during downshifts. This means the gearbox itself should not simply be described as a BMW manual unit, even though the car shares substantial engineering with BMW.

The Supra is also nearing the end of its production life. Toyota confirmed that fifth-generation production would end in spring 2026, making the 2026 model year its last. Its entry-level manual starts at $59,595, including the destination charge, making it less expensive than the three BMWs in this comparison.

Toyota’s US website lists the 2026 manual models and offers an inventory search, but that doesn’t guarantee new examples are still available at dealerships. Buyers should verify stock directly rather than assume they can still order one. While the Supra remains an attractive sports car in its own right, the M2, M3, and M4 are more appropriate choices for this BMW-focused comparison.

BMW’s Manual M Cars Make Buyers Choose Engagement Over Convenience

Choosing between BMW’s manual M cars comes down to more than horsepower. The M2, M3 Sedan, and M4 Coupe share the same 473-hp output, but their different body styles cater to distinct priorities. A six-speed manual lets drivers select gears themselves and stay more involved in the driving process, while the eight-speed automatic offers a different approach, particularly for those who prioritize convenience in traffic or prefer automatic gear changes on track. Neither transmission is universally better; the right choice depends on how the car will be driven and what the owner values most.

The M2 makes the strongest case for a compact, two-door performance car, while the M3 adds four doors and greater everyday versatility. The M4, meanwhile, suits buyers who favor coupe styling and are willing to pay more for it. Prospective owners should also consider that choosing a manual limits trim and drivetrain options. Ultimately, BMW’s remaining manual lineup offers meaningful variety, but buyers must decide which body style best fits their needs before choosing a gearbox.
