THIS is the Italian EV that matters: all-new 2027 Lancia Gamma

Forget the $630,000 iFerrari, because there’s another all-new EV from a legendary Italian marque that’s just been released – and this one could have a much bigger impact on the North American market than Maranello’s. Meet the all new Lancia Gamma.

For the uninitiated and any readers who’ve never heard of the Gran Turismo game series, Lancia is a legendary rally brand that’s won more races and championships than literally any other – but that whole, “win on Sunday, sell on Monday” thing hasn’t really worked out for them, and they currently make do selling a few hundred examples of the subcompact Ypsilon in their home market. That could be about to change, however, with the launch of the all-new Lancia Gamma five-passenger crossover.

While details are sparse, we do know that the new Gamma will be built on the 400V STLA Medium EV platform, making it the storied brand’s first crossover and its best shot at growing its market share outside of Italy in at least two decades.

More significantly, though, it’s also a look at what Stellantis’ next shot at revitalizing the Jeep and Chrysler brands in the US could look like … so let’s take a look.

    BEV and PHEV options

Stellantis is offering the new Gamma with what it calls, “a comprehensive powertrain offering” that includes a 145 hp PHEV model alongside a 100% battery electric range that starts with a 230 hp FWD model with up to 540 km (~335 miles) of range, and works its way up to a 375 hp, high-torque, AWD all-wheel drive version with up to 675 km (~420 miles) of range from a 104 kWh battery.

Those specs would be more than good enough to carry the Chrysler brand into a new, more modern era here in the US, and the availability of a plug-in hybrid model would play well to the strengths of CJDR dealers who are already used to selling their customers Jeep 4xe and Chrysler Pacifica PHEVs.

    It’s nice in there

Inside, the new Gamma offers a more subdued, mainstream version of the new design language it’s been showing off in its recent concepts, with an assortment of physical buttons and HVAC controls pairing nicely with a digital instrument cluster and wide center display.

No word yet on pricing, but Stellantis insists that production in Melfi is a central element of the Gamma project, and emphasizes that the car is designed for the European market, made in Italy, and built to showcase that nation’s manufacturing expertise and cutting-edge technology.

Here’s hoping we get to sample it, in one way or another, on this side of the pond.
