While it can be frustrating having to watch those with deeper pockets drop $70,000 on a high-end luxury sedan while barely batting an eyelid, those who are open to picking up a used bargain only need to wait a little while before the very same vehicle will be available for a fraction of its original MSRP. Luxury cars tend to struggle the most when it comes to holding their value, primarily due to the first owners wanting only the latest and greatest.

It’s not uncommon to see such vehicles lose half their value in just a handful of years, which opens up the door for some truly awesome deals for those with some patience. The Volvo S90 T8 Recharge is just such an example, with the rapid but plush sedan now on the market for the same price as a new entry-level luxury sedan.

Volvo’s Range-Topping Sedan Provides Sports Car Levels Of Pace

The S90 may be the largest sedan Volvo has offered in the US, but that doesn’t stop it from launching down the street like a startled cheetah. The range-topping T8 Recharge variant comes bundled with a potent 2.0-liter twincharged inline-four engine, which is a pretty unique find these days. Twincharging essentially means it uses both a supercharger and a turbocharger in the quest to eliminate the frustrating lag that the latter brings to the table. A supercharger provides instant punch the moment you hit the throttle pedal. This eliminates any hang time waiting for the turbo to kick in, which takes over to give the supercharger a break at higher revs.

When combined with the onboard hybrid system, the S90 is afforded an ultra-smooth and consistent wave of power that keeps it accelerating at all speeds. Earlier versions of the T8 Recharge produced 400 horsepower, though the engine received an update for the 2023 model year that saw its outright grunt figure upgraded to 455 hp. In its most powerful form, the S90 T8 was a bit of a sleeper, and could hit 60 mph in a slick 4.5 seconds, which is quicker than the likes of the 2009 Jaguar XKR or 2019 BMW M135i. Not bad for a car that tips the scales at over 4,600 pounds. Its effortless acceleration is assisted by an eight-speed automatic transmission, which shares the car’s power between all four wheels.

The S90 T8 Is Also More Efficient Than You Might Think

Being a plug-in hybrid, the S90 is also pretty fuel-efficient given its size and weight. The hybrid system can either assist the engine in gathering speed like a normal hybrid to help save fuel, or allow the engine a break and keep the thing moving on its own. The S90 T8 can drive for around 35 miles before the engine has to kick in, or before you’ll need to pull over and charge the battery from a home or public generator. As a result of this versatility, you can expect a combined MPG figure of 30, which matches many smaller and less powerful vehicles on the road.

The beauty of the S90 T8 Recharge is that you can enjoy the power and pace of a high-end sports car on one hand, but the efficiency of a standard family sedan on the other.

Despite the S90 T8’s effectiveness, Volvo struggled to sell many of them. The Swedish firm struggled to shift more than 2,000 of the things per year, and canceled it completely ahead of the 2026 model year. Its unpopularity, alongside the usual steep depreciation experienced by high-end luxury cars, means used examples of the S90 are amazingly cheap considering their original MSRP. The CarBuzz Marketplace reports that the average sale price of the model currently stands at just $45,950, which is around $25k down on the car’s base $70,500 price. That’s pretty good going for just a couple of years of service under its belt.

The good news doesn’t stop there, as you can get away with spending even less. The earlier 2021 and 2022 cars may award you less grunt to play with, but you can find them with relatively high mileage for less than $30k. A four-year-old S90 with 50,000 miles on the clock may sound a lot, but as long as it has been properly maintained, it’ll have plenty of life left in it yet. The good news is that you can also pick up more well-traveled 2024 cars for less than $40k, which is the same as a base Cadillac CT4. Not only does the S90 T8 bring along a ton more performance and fuel efficiency than the entry-level Caddy, but it also resides in another universe when it comes to luxury.

With US sales down double-digits in Q1, Volvo’s lineup is going through a big shakeup to get things right.

While you won’t get the choice of spec’ing the S90 T8 yourself by going used, there are plenty of fascinating specs out there waiting to be discovered. The car was offered with a range of upmarket materials for the cabin to be fashioned from, with the ultra-comfortable seats being finished in supple, high-quality leather. They’re also heated and 14-way electrically adjustable, ensuring bodies of all types will be comfortable using them. Joining this is real wood trim and brushed metal trimmings, which bring a real air of luxury to the inside of the car. It’s pretty easy to spend hours in the S90 without feeling the need to escape, partly due to the lounge-like seats, but also due to the big and airy cabin layout.

Active Noise Control is also included, which helps keep distracting noises from outside the car firmly out of the cockpit. The ride is decent, if not on the sporty side, though its versatility is helped by an adaptive suspension setup that helps tune the dampers to whatever surface they’re traveling over. Air suspension is available as an extra to help provide a softer ride, though be prepared to spend a chunk more cash to secure a specimen equipped with it.

An S90 T8 Also Places Plenty Of Upmarket Goodies At Your Fingertips

Alongside the pure luxury elements, the S90 T8 provides a wide range of toys for you to lose yourself in. Dual-zone climate control, as well as a heated leather steering wheel, help push the comfort levels up even further, while its premium Harman Kardon audio system is on hand to keep its occupants entertained. Front and rear parking assist systems are also present to ensure you don’t knock those expensive bumpers, with these backed up by a reverse camera.

While you can get these elements in lower-priced sedans, you won’t be able to enjoy them in such well-crafted and welcoming surroundings. Don’t blame us if you start considering selling your house to take up living in the back of a Volvo.

This Could Be Your Last Chance To Get A Volvo Sedan In The US

Black 2024 Volvo S90 T8 Recharge side viewVolvo

The S90 T8 Recharge is somewhat of a unicorn these days, as it was the last Volvo sedan offered to US audiences. Both it and its smaller S60 sibling were recently killed off in the US due to poor sales, with the brand instead having put all its chips on the blazing SUV sector instead. Whether it’s gas or electric-powered, all of Volvo’s American range now comes with an SUV body draped over the top. The closest you’ll get to finding an S90 if you pop to your local Volvo dealer tomorrow would be the XC90, which is the marque’s full-size luxury SUV option.

You’re not going to believe how cheap this sedan is when we tell you. Plus, there’s nothing like reclining back seats to wow your passengers.

Considering the lessening popularity of the sedan in its entirety, you’ll likely be waiting a while for the Volvo sedan to ever make it across the Atlantic again. This makes the S90 T8 arguably even better value, as there’s little chance you’ll be able to secure yourself such a modern Volvo sedan again, at least in the medium term. As options go, the S90 T8 Recharge is a pretty thrilling and sumptuous one to land on.
