The Daily Brief wraps up the biggest stories and our exclusive reporting on the auto industry and car culture.

Even Cummins and Duramax drivers concede that the 7.3-liter Ford Power Stroke is a darn good diesel. It’s not fast—at least, not in stock form—but it’ll pull the house down without breaking a sweat. That being said, the automatic transmissions leave a lot to be desired. (I own a ’95 with an E4OD. I can say that.) To address those shortcomings with a modern solution, the crew at US Shift has swapped a 10R140 from a 2023 Super Duty into a 2003 truck.

Now, I understand that lots of folks are still skeptical of the 10-speed autos you’ll find in modern Fords. The US Shift crew are big believers, though, and they’ve made hay with these types of swaps. I remember writing about their work on the Ford Panther platform, tossing a 10-speed into a Mercury Grand Marquis. They’ve devoted a ton of time and labor to making these transmissions work better than stock, whether we’re talking about adapting the hardware to fit or tuning the software so the shifts are ace.

The 2003 Ford F-250 in question here was originally fitted with a 4R100, which is the better of the automatics ever mated to a 7.3-liter. However, it still suffered from the same downsides as all stock examples of this truck: Falling out of boost between shifts, losing power and efficiency when it matters most. Since the 10-speed offers closer ratios that keep the engine in its powerband, the performance is noticeably better, both on paper and behind the wheel.

Karl Baumann from US Shift says the transmission swap alone cut this truck’s zero-to-60 time by a full second. “Once you’re in boost, you’re there until you lift,” he explained in a recent YouTube video. Chad, who owns the rig, mentioned that every gear feels like a launch because the turbo stays spooled the entire time.

Of course, this isn’t a straightforward transplant. Along with the obvious hard work of designing an adapter so the 10R140 will even bolt up to the 7.3-liter, there’s the custom shift linkage and brackets that US Shift hopes to bring to market. (This swap is a one-off… for now.) And they also used a thermostatic filter adapter, which results in faster warm-ups and prevents overheating as well as overcooling. Then, they swapped in a transmission cooler from a 6.0-liter Power Stroke’s 5R110—a popular upgrade.

Finally, US Shift deployed its Quick10 standalone controller. It’s required to make sure the computers talk to each other.

    Swapping a 10-Speed into a 7.3L PowerStroke Diesel F-250

The great news for 7.3-liter owners is that the 10R140 can handle a ton of power. A stock 2023 Super Duty with the 6.7-liter Power Stroke makes at least 1,050 lb-ft of torque, and as much as 1,200 lb-ft in some applications. The white ’03 you’re looking at here has been tuned to produce around 700 lb-ft, so it’s still well within the 10-speed’s capabilities to manage that much twist.

Not everybody will love the idea of swapping a newer, more complex transmission into their bulletproof workhorse. But if you believe the guys at US Shift, it’s a serious upgrade for anyone wanting better performance and fuel mileage out of their 7.3-liter. I wonder if we’ll see one of these in an Old Body Style Ford someday.
