The world record for the longest journey on an electric motorcycle on a single charge has just been absolutely demolished.

And it was done so by a Zero Motorcycles rider traveling 436.5 km (271.2 miles) before finally running out of juice.

The ride, completed by Belgian rider Jelle Verstaen aboard a Zero DS electric motorcycle, earned a new Guinness World Records title and blew past the previous record of 310.7 km (193 miles) by more than 125 km (78 miles).

And this wasn’t some one-off aerodynamic streamliner built specifically to chase a record. The bike was a production Zero DS equipped with the company’s optional Power Tank, bringing total battery capacity to 19.2 kWh. Verstaen was joined for the ride by two others on Zeros as well, with all three beating the previous record.

The record attempt began high in the French Alps and eventually wound its way down toward the Mediterranean coast, with Verstaen aiming to maintain an average cruising speed of around 52 km/h (32 mph).

That might not sound particularly fast for a motorcycle – and it certainly wasn’t – but speed was very much the enemy here. Aerodynamic drag increases dramatically as speeds rise, making relatively slow riding one of the best ways to stretch an electric motorcycle’s battery.

The result was a ride that lasted deep into the night and through the next morning.

Zero says the team specifically chose nighttime riding to reduce traffic, helping Verstaen maintain a steady, efficient pace. That became especially important as the route transitioned from the Alps toward lower elevations and eventually the Mediterranean.

And while Verstaen ultimately took the crown, he of course wasn’t the only Zero rider out there seeing just how far an electric motorcycle could go.

His riding partners on a Zero SR/S managed 350 km (217 miles) on a charge, while a DSR/X stretched its battery to 384 km (239 miles). Both would make for impressive range figures on their own, but the DS simply kept going.

The final portion of the record ride apparently wasn’t exactly pleasant, either.

Heavy rain arrived for roughly the last 100 km (62 miles), turning what was already an overnight endurance run into an increasingly soggy battle toward the finish.

But Verstaen and the DS continued onward until the bike ultimately covered 436.5 km, surpassing the previous record by more than 40%.

The ride was tracked using GPS and independently witnessed as part of the Guinness World Records verification process.

For an electric motorcycle carrying less than 20 kWh of battery, traveling 271 miles on a charge is an impressive demonstration of just how efficient two-wheeled EVs can become when ridden carefully.

    Electrek’s Take

This is quite a feat, and I love seeing electric motorcycles used for all kinds of challenges. There’s still a surprisingly persistent belief that electric motorcycles are inherently short-range machines, and traveling over 270 miles on less than 20 kWh of battery is a pretty good way to demonstrate just how much energy a motorcycle actually needs to move a person down the road.

But there are also some fairly large asterisks here.

For one thing, the route started high in the French Alps and worked its way toward the Mediterranean, meaning the riders enjoyed a significant net decrease in elevation. It wasn’t exactly 271 miles of coasting downhill, of course, and there were plenty of climbs and other terrain along the way, but gravity was nevertheless lending a helping hand over the course of the trip.

The bigger factor, though, was speed.

A target of around 52 km/h (32 mph) is incredibly efficient for an electric motorcycle, but it’s not representative of how most people actually ride motorcycles on the open road. At typical highway speeds, aerodynamic drag would chew through that battery much more quickly.

In fact, that low target speed may also help explain why so much of the attempt took place overnight. Maintaining around 32 mph on roads where daytime traffic is moving considerably faster could range from annoying to downright dangerous. Doing it in the middle of the night with much lighter traffic makes considerably more sense.

So no, this doesn’t mean you should expect to hop on a Zero DS and ride 271 miles at 70 mph without stopping.

But that’s not really the point of a record attempt, either.

Records are about finding the limits of what a machine can do under carefully optimized conditions, and Zero just demonstrated that a production electric motorcycle carrying less energy than many plug-in hybrid cars can travel more than 270 miles through the real world on a single charge.

That’s a heck of an achievement – even if you probably don’t want to replicate the pace on your next road trip.
