Someone who buys an almost $300,000 performance SUV must be aware of what depreciation could do to their investment. The brutal reality is that if part of that check could involve a significant number of upgrades or personalization, taking the cost even higher. However, depreciation is likely to be even more brutal than it might otherwise be on a vehicle like this.

This may be the case with one particular 2023 Aston Martin DBX 707 that sold at auction for $147,000, and its options did little to protect its resale value. As a result, this highly potent SUV fell into the same price bracket as a brand-new Cadillac Escalade-V.

This 5,000-Mile DBX 707 Lost More Than $133,000

In January 2026, an Aston Martin DBX 707 crossed the virtual auction block on Bring a Trailer. The SUV only had about 5,000 miles on the clock and was finished in Xenon Gray with a Phantom Gray interior. The original window sticker was present and showed a price of $280,216, while the winning bid turned out to be $147,000. This represented a roughly 47.5% drop in value over those few years. Someone picked up this Aston for around half of what it originally cost, despite it having covered no more than 5,000 miles.

There was no evidence of accidents or significant damage. However, the paint protection film on the tailgate was bubbling, and the leather was slightly delaminating on the right front and both rear door panels. The new owner got all the service records and discovered that the outgoing owner had duly changed the oil and flushed out the brake fluid before the auction.

The total acquisition cost, including the auction house fee, brings about an interesting comparison. The total cost for the DBX 707 worked out to $154,350 before taxes and registration. Compared with a 2027 Cadillac Escalade-V starting at $169,300 (before destination or fees), the Aston comes in $14,950 cheaper.

More Than $41,000 In Options Couldn’t Protect This SUV’s Value

Expensive factory personalization doesn’t seem to retain anything close to its original cost when a vehicle comes to auction, and that’s especially important in this case. This car wasn’t an entry-level DBX 707 at all, with about $41,000 in additional equipment and personalization that bumped it up from its original $236,000 starting price.

The Xenon Gray paint alone amounted to $5,300, and the car’s total specification also included a gloss black grille, smoked taillights, and orange brake calipers. It came with satin-black 22-inch sport wheels, a satin silver jewelry pack, and carbon fiber interior trim. Meanwhile, the SUV’s interior had semi-aniline leather with contrasting red accents.

The DBX 707 was already formidable as standard, with plenty of expensive hardware like carbon ceramic brakes, adaptive air suspension, and electronic active roll control. It also had heated and ventilated seats, adaptive cruise control, a panoramic roof, and a 14-speaker Aston Martin audio system.

It’s obviously difficult to conclude that specific upgrades or personalization options may have more retained value than others, as a lot of factors go into the eventual hammer price at any auction. Color combinations, condition, mileage, maintenance history, geography, and bidder behavior can all factor into an auction result. But there’s clearly no evidence that spending another $40,000 or $50,000 on an already expensive luxury vehicle could mean that money can roll back from the used market later. The net result is that something that originally occupied quarter-million-dollar territory is now competing with considerably less exotic new machinery.

The DBX 707 Still Has Genuine Supercar Performance

The buyer who picked up this DBX 707 on Bring a Trailer certainly acquired an extraordinary vehicle. It comes with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that produces 697 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque. The output goes through a nine-speed automatic transmission with a multi-plate wet clutch instead of the conventional torque converter standard on the original DBX. According to Aston Martin, the vehicle could get to 60 miles per hour in 3.1 seconds, hit 100 mph in 7.4 seconds, and reach a top speed of 193 mph. And when you consider that this was a five-seat luxury SUV weighing more than two tons, those are quite remarkable figures.

Aston Martin put a considerable amount of engineering effort into the DBX 707. It fitted ball-bearing turbochargers, used bespoke engine calibration, and added a shorter final-drive ratio to improve acceleration. The transmission handled the extra torque effectively while still delivering quick gear changes. An electronically controlled active all-wheel-drive system distributes torque effectively, and it also has an electronic limited-slip rear differential, adaptive damping, and huge carbon-ceramic brakes front and rear.

However, that lucky auction buyer may still have to deal with potentially challenging running costs ahead. After all, carbon-ceramic brakes, huge tires, a complex air-suspension system, and almost 700 hp may still represent costly ownership propositions, even if the purchase price was relatively low.

Plus, this DBX 707 is likely out of warranty. Aston Martin’s new vehicle coverage in the United States lasts three years with unlimited mileage from the SUV’s original retail sale.

Other Sales Show How Quickly DBX 707 Values Fell

There’s not enough transaction data to determine where a DBX 707’s value could go next, but there are indications of how values have shifted in the past few years. For example, a 2023 DBX 707 with around 5,000 miles sold at auction for $190,000 in February 2024. By early 2026, this example showed that the 2023 DBX 707 could sell for $147,000. That’s a substantial shift in what bidders seem to pay for early DBX 707s in just a couple of years, even when mileage remained very low.

Higher mileages seem to push the numbers even more, as shown by a 2023 example with 26,000 miles that sold for $124,000 in July 2026. That vehicle originally had a suggested price of $287,386.

A Used DBX 707 Now Costs Less Than A New Escalade-V

    2025 Cadillac Escalade-VChristopher Smith/CarBuzz/Valnet

A new Cadillac Escalade-V represents an especially useful reference point here as another brutally excessive V8 luxury SUV. It comes with a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 generating 682 hp and 653 lb-ft of torque, and it can get to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. While these two vehicles are broadly similar in power output, the Aston can still deliver substantially stronger acceleration on paper, likely in part due to the Cadillac being a big, body-on-frame SUV with room for seven passengers across three rows.

But in terms of price, this 2023 DBX 707 is now a cheaper proposition when lined up against that new Escalade-V. The Cadillac is still an enormous three-row luxury vehicle, while the Aston is more of a high-performance crossover, so it’s tough to say whether one is better than the other. In any case, the buyer of a new Escalade-V would also get a new car warranty and fewer of the unknowns that might come with that older exotic DBX.

From a big-picture point of view, the DBX 707, when new, was in a far different financial universe compared to an Escalade-V. The Aston Martin has now moved on from being the more exotic, and substantially more costly, choice to becoming the cheaper option of the pair. So perhaps the original owner, having lost more than $133,000 in about 5,000 miles, may question their original investment based on the brutal arithmetic. But the used buyer, by contrast, may realize that spectacular depreciation can sometimes be good, depending on the specific side of the transaction.
