General Motors’ trucks and large SUVs have been put through the wringer for the last few years. The automaker’s 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8s have caused too many owners’ headaches to count – between lawsuits and recalls for poor reliability, it’s about time for an update. In the Chevrolet Tahoe’s case, that update is due for the 2028 model year. Gone will be the problematic engines of old to make room for GM’s new and improved V8s.
The SUV has to survive one more year, though. The 2027 Tahoe is up against some serious competition. Every full-size rival one-ups the Chevrolet Tahoe in one way or another. If you can’t wait another year to buy a new people-mover, then these Tahoe rivals are worth considering.
All specs come directly from the manufacturers. Pricing is correct at the time of writing, and excludes destination, taxes, options, incentives, and potential dealer fees. Automakers reserve the right to change prices at any time without notice. This list is in no particular order, as each model offers a unique benefit over the 2027 Chevrolet Tahoe.
2027 Nissan Armada
Out-Powers And Out-Torques The Tahoe
2027 Nissan Armada Overview
Base Price
$64,290
Base Powertrain
3.5-liter twin-turbo V6
Horsepower | Torque
425 hp | 516 lb-ft
We’re not here to say every rival is better than the Tahoe in every way — Chevy’s SUV is a fine family car that feels rather well-rounded for its class. However, it has shortfalls in a few areas. One of those shortfalls is how weak its standard engine is. Its 5.3-liter naturally aspirated V8 only makes 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. If that’s not enough for you, or you’d rather reach highway speeds before the end of the on-ramp, then the Nissan Armada makes for a viable alternative.
Nissan left the Armada’s V8 behind after the 2024 model year. Even then, its old 5.6-liter V8 was more powerful than the Tahoe’s base engine. That said, the 2027 model is powered by a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that makes 425 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. Upgrade to the Nismo variant, and you’ll find 460 horsepower spinning all four wheels for a ~6.0-second 0-60 mph sprint. When we drove it, our road tester – Ian Wright – found the Armada Nismo “a lot of fun with expectations managed.”
The Armada is also one of the most comfortable SUVs in its class. There’s a distinct lack of road noise, it comes with a suite of standard safety features, and its suspension floats like a cloud in certain trim levels.
“The Pro-4X and Platinum Reserve trims ride on adaptive air suspension that is not available on lower trim levels. While it can produce a truck-like bounce on some uneven surfaces, the Armada’s suspension is among the most comfortable and controlled in the segment.”
– Jared Rosenholtz, Former Editor-At-Large, CarBuzz (2025 Nissan Armada Drive Review)
Higher trim levels feel more luxurious than their price tags would suggest (although they’re not affordable, they approach the Infiniti QX80’s level of comfort). The standard Armada can also tow more than the Tahoe; the Chevy maxes out at 8,400 pounds with the Max Trailering Package, while the Armada reaches 8,500 pounds.
2027 Jeep Grand Wagoneer
Best-In-Class Towing Capacity
2027 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Overview
Base Price
$65,000
Base Powertrain
3.0-liter twin-turbo I6
Horsepower | Torque
420 hp | 469 lb-ft
Speaking of towing capacity, Stellantis has a word or two to say about the entire segment with the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. It’s nice enough inside to warrant rivaling luxury models like the Cadillac Escalade (which is built on the same platform as the Chevy Tahoe), but it’s capable enough to out-tow every other rival in the full-size body-on-frame SUV segment. In order to pull up to 10,000 pounds, the Grand Wagoneer uses a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six, dubbed the Hurricane.
Buyers can choose between rear-wheel and four-wheel drive. While some higher trim levels come with standard 4WD, every lower trim can be optioned with 4WD for a price. Available is Jeep’s “Quadra-Drive II” system, which comes with a rear limited-slip differential and a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. Jeep offers more 4WD systems that behave differently for every need than any other automaker. The Grand Wagoneer’s system comes with five drive modes, including auto, sport, snow, sand/mud, and rock, and can automatically adapt on the fly to current driving conditions.
2027 Toyota Sequoia
Superior Fuel Economy, Off-Road Capability
2027 Toyota Sequoia Overview
Base Price
$65,725
Base Powertrain
3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 Hybrid
Horsepower | Torque
437 hp | 583 lb-ft
The Toyota Sequoia has always been an icon of reliability and capability. Its first two generations will likely out-live all of us when maintained properly, and they have more than enough aftermarket support. That said, the third-generation Sequoia moved away from its old V8 powertrain just like the Armada we talked about earlier. Buyers can now find a relatively efficient 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid system under the hood. It’s more powerful than either Tahoe engine (both the 5.3L and 6.2L, the latter of which makes 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque).
It’s still a massive ladder-frame SUV, so its hybrid system can only do so much in terms of fuel economy. Nevertheless, the EPA rates its RWD variants at 21/24/22 mpg city/highway/combined, and its 4WD variants at 19/22/20 mpg. For reference, a RWD Tahoe with either the 5.3-liter V8 or 6.2-liter V8 only gets 15/20/17 mpg.
The Sequoia is also a blast to drive off-road. Again, it’s so big that it won’t fit down many tight trails. However, the TRD Pro trim comes with 2.5-inch Fox internal bypass shocks with remote rear reservoirs, a TRD Pro front sway bar, standard 4WD, and more. The Tahoe is also somewhat off-road capable in its Z71 trim level, but you’d have to spend extra for air-ride adaptive suspension, a limited-slip differential, and more. At least the Z71 comes with standard 4WD and skid plates.
2027 Ford Expedition
More Power, Better Towing, More Tech
2027 Ford Expedition Overview
Base Price
$63,600
Base Powertrain
3.5-liter twin-turbo V6
Horsepower | Torque
400 hp | 480 lb-ft
Ford offers more of the same points as some other competitors. The Expedition can tow nearly as much as the Grand Wagoneer at 9,600 pounds when properly equipped, it has more power and torque than the Tahoe, and feels more comfortable inside. Having been built on the same platform as the F-150, we’re not surprised at how capable the ladder-frame SUV is. The Expedition lost its V8 long before most others in its class, having moved to smaller displacements after the 2014 model year.
Today, it moves with 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque from its standard-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, or up to 440 hp in the high-output variant. Only the Tremor trim level gets the HO engine as standard, while the Platinum can be upgraded. The Active (base model) and King Ranch stick to the SO engine.
Power aside, the Expedition looks and feels nicer than most Tahoe trims. The Platinum trim level starts at $70,550, and it comes with standard leather upholstery, a customizable 24-inch panoramic display and 13.2-inch center display, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, tri-zone climate control with third-row auxiliary controls, and much more. To reach that level in the Tahoe, you’d have to spend at least $76,100 on the Premier trim level.
2027 GMC Yukon
More Luxurious Interior
2027 GMC Yukon Overview
Base Price
$70,200
Base Powertrain
5.3-liter V8
Horsepower | Torque
355 hp | 383 lb-ft
Finally, we have the GMC Yukon. Under the surface, it shares a platform and engines with the Tahoe, so it’s a fair fight as far as powertrains go. The base model still uses the 5.3-liter V8 with no adjustments or special tunes, while buyers can also buy Yukons with either a 6.2-liter V8 or a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-six. Towing capacity remains at a maximum of 8,400 pounds with the 5.3L, and 8,200 with the 6.2L and 3.0L.
What really sets this model apart and redeems it over the Tahoe is its interior and ride comfort. Of course, we expect it to, since it starts at $70,200. The Elevation trim, or its base model, comes with heated front and second-row outboard seats, power-folding third-row seats, a Bose 10-speaker surround-sound system, a 16.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and an 11-inch digital driver display, among other features.
The Yukon can also be equipped with surround-view cameras, a rear-seat media system, a 15-inch head-up display, and Super Cruise, General Motors’ hands-free driving assistance. It’s even more well-rounded, as buyers can choose off-road variants like the AT4 and AT4 Ultimate, or go all-in on Cadillac levels of luxury in the Denali Ultimate, which starts at $104,800 for the 2027 model year.
