Not Every Model Depreciates At The Same Rate
We added a section after discussing new pricing to include brand depreciation averages in addition to some specific model examples.
Every luxury automaker promises the best tech, the sharpest handling, and the plushest ride. Yet the Audi vs BMW vs Mercedes rivalry survives because these three German giants build cars for completely different buyers, with the BMW M4 being a legendary driver’s coupe, while the Mercedes S-Class is a luxury barge. However, when you look a bit deeper into this rivalry, the real differences come down to daily priorities.
The information in this article was correct at the time of writing. The MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price), where mentioned, excludes destination fees and other costs. Brands reserve the right to change pricing without notice.
Each Brand’s Core Personality
BMW Is Purely For The Driver
2024 BMW X5 xDrive50eBMW
Shoppers asking “Which is better, BMW or Mercedes or Audi?”, need to start with how they actually drive. BMW builds cars for people who care about steering feel, cornering balance, and quick throttle response. Even in family haulers like the X3 or X5, the suspension is firmer, and the transmission shifts with a touch more urgency than in rivals. Most BMWs send power to the rear wheels first, trading a soft city ride for real athleticism.
Mercedes-Benz Is For The Passenger
2026 Mercedes-Benz C-Class SedanMercedes-Benz
Look at the BMW vs Mercedes vs Audi matchup from the passenger seat, Mercedes-Benz easily wins the comfort war. It tunes its cars to isolate you from the outside world. The steering is light, the gas pedal is intentionally relaxed, so the car never lurches, and the suspension floats over broken pavement. Whether you buy a C-Class or a GLE, the goal is a quiet cabin, a pillowy ride, and unmistakable curbside status.
Audi Is Winning At Being The Daily All-Rounder
All-new 2025 Audi SQ5 on a highwayAudi
Buyers torn between Audi, BMW, or Mercedes often choose an Audi because they want the middle ground. Audi avoids the stiff ride of a BMW and the floaty softness of a Mercedes, focusing instead on all-weather stability and clean design. Because nearly every gas-powered Audi in America comes standard with quattro all-wheel drive, the cars feel planted and effortless at speed. It is the sensible choice for drivers who want precision without drama if you can’t step away from Germany’s holy trinity.
Cabin Vibe & Tech Philosophy
Mercedes-Benz Plays The Lounge Game
2026 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sedan DashboardMercedes-Benz
Open the door of a modern Mercedes at night, and it looks like a VIP lounge. Mercedes leans hard into visual theater, packing its cabins with 64-color ambient lighting, turbine air vents, and massive glass displays. During a quick showroom sit-down, a Mercedes easily feels like the most expensive car here. The catch is daily usability: tiny touch-sensitive steering wheel pads and buried screen menus make simple adjustments annoying when you’re on the move. Still, there’s a big battle brewing in 2027 between the C-Class and 3 Series.
- Best feature: 64-color ambient lighting and massive screens that look like a VIP lounge at night.
- Daily annoyance: Tiny swipe pads on the steering wheel and climate controls buried in menus.
BMW Cockpits Bring Out The Fun

If you are wondering what’s better Audi or BMW from behind the wheel, the dashboard layout usually settles the argument. BMW builds its interiors like a cockpit, angling its curved display toward the driver, so every menu is within reach. You get a thick steering wheel, bolstered seats, and bold geometric trim. While BMW also ditched physical climate buttons, keeping a center console rotary dial helps prevent screen fatigue. And despite the Neue Klasse era borrowing cost-cutting tactics from China, BMW is still at the top of its game.
- Best feature: A curved screen angled toward the driver paired with a physical rotary dial on the console.
- Daily annoyance: Nearly all physical dashboard buttons are gone, forcing you into sub-menus.
Audi, Ever The Minimalist
2026 Audi A5 Interior Infotainment SystemAudi
Audi takes a cleaner, more architectural approach to interior design. Instead of nightclub lighting or wild trim shapes, Audi favors crisp horizontal lines, dark finishes, and logical ergonomics. Its standout feature is the Virtual Cockpit, a sharp digital gauge screen behind the wheel that turns your instrument cluster into a widescreen map. Even with newer models like the Q5 and A5 adding passenger screens, an Audi cabin still feels like a modern office.
- Best feature: The Virtual Cockpit gauge cluster, which puts a giant widescreen map right in your line of sight.
- Daily annoyance: The dark, business-like trim feels less flashy than a similarly priced Mercedes.
Performance Badges: AMG vs. M vs. RS
Mercedes-AMG: Muscle In A Tuxedo
2024 – 2026 Mercedes-AMG C 63 exteriorMercedes
If you want brute force and exhaust noise, you buy an AMG. Mercedes-AMG built its name by stuffing massive engines into luxury cars – creating the German version of an American muscle car in a tailored suit. Even though newer models like the C 43 and GLC 63 swapped their old V8s for complex four-cylinder hybrids, the mission remains the same. AMG is built for straight-line drama between stoplights, not chasing lap records. But don’t fret, Mercedes-AMG learned its lesson and will be bringing back the bi-turbo V8.
BMW M: The Ultimate Track Tool
2023 BMW M4 CSLBMW2023 BMW M4 CSLBMW
BMW’s M division caters to drivers who hunt down twisty backroads or pay for weekend track days. A full-strength BMW M3 or M4 is stiff, darty, and unapologetically intense. The steering reacts to the tiniest wrist movement, the brakes bite hard, and the turbocharged six-cylinder engines beg to be revved out. That razor-sharp focus comes with a catch, though: a full M car transmits every road imperfection straight into your spine.
Audi RS: The All-Weather Supercar
2026 Audi RS Q8 performance. Front, three-quartersAudi USA
Audi’s RS badge stands for RennSport, and its calling card is usable, year-round speed. While a rear-drive BMW M car will spin its tires on a damp road, an Audi RS5, RS6 Avant, or RS Q8 simply hooks up and launches forward. By pairing huge horsepower with standard quattro grip and a more forgiving suspension than BMW, Audi makes going fast effortless. Any driver can mash the throttle in the rain with total confidence.
All-Wheel Drive: quattro vs. xDrive vs. 4MATIC
Audi quattro Favors Pure Grip

In a US market dominated by SUVs and winter commuting, all-wheel drive matters. Audi pioneered luxury all-wheel drive, and quattro remains the benchmark for pure traction. Rather than trying to make the car feel playful around corners, quattro is engineered to glue the tires to the road. Whether you are climbing a snowy mountain pass or merging into wet traffic, the car tracks straight and feels unbothered by bad weather.
BMW xDrive Retains Rear-Drive Attitude
A detail shot of the 2025 BMW X1 M35i’s front wheelBMW
BMW designed xDrive so all-wheel-drive buyers wouldn’t lose that classic rear-wheel-drive feel the brand is known for. In core models like the 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, and X5, xDrive sends most of the engine’s power to the rear wheels during normal driving. That keeps the steering feeling clean and lively on dry roads. The split second the rear tires lose grip, computer-controlled clutches send power to the front wheels to pull you straight.
Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC About Smooth Confidence
This is a 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 4Matic in Starling Blue MetallicJay Traugott / CarBuzz / Valnet
Mercedes-Benz tunes its 4MATIC system to be completely invisible from behind the wheel. It isn’t trying to help you power-slide out of a corner like a BMW, and it isn’t marketed like a rally weapon like an Audi. Instead, 4MATIC works quietly with the stability control to stop wheelspin before you ever feel a slip.

Curb appeal separates these three brands before you even start the engine. Over the past few years, BMW has become the most polarizing designer in the luxury business. Between massive kidney grilles stretching down to the bumper, split headlights on the 7 Series and X7, and sharp, slab-sided bodywork on the latest X3, BMW wants its cars to shock you in traffic. You either love the look, or you hate it.
Mercedes-Benz plays a much more traditional game of high-status luxury. Its exterior styling relies on smooth, flowing curves, classic proportions, and zero subtle branding. Nowadays, Mercedes packs tiny three-pointed star patterns inside the grilles, across the taillights, and inside the headlights, often pairing them with illuminated front badges. A Mercedes is designed to look rich and unmistakable from afar.
Audi sits at the opposite end of the spectrum, championing quiet luxury. Even when Audi launches an all-new A5 or Q5, the styling looks like a sharpened evolution of the outgoing model rather than a radical reinvention. With crisp body creases, clean LED light bars, and balanced proportions, an Audi blends into a corporate parking lot without begging for attention.
Pricing Differences In The US Showroom
2027 BMW X5 rear 3/4 view on the roadBMW
At the bottom and middle of the US lineup, base sticker prices can be deceptive. On paper, a base BMW 3 Series ($48,000) or Mercedes-Benz C-Class ($49,650) looks cheaper than an Audi A5 ($50,400). That is a showroom pricing trick. BMW and Mercedes advertise lower starting prices on rear-wheel-drive models, then charge extra to add xDrive or 4MATIC. Because Audi includes quattro all-wheel drive standard on almost every gas model, real-world prices are practically identical. Cross-shop America’s favorite compact luxury SUVs – the BMW X3, Mercedes GLC, and Audi Q5 – and all three start right around $51,300 to $53,300 with all-wheel drive.
Move up the ladder, however, and a clear price hierarchy appears. Audi acts as the value play, bundling its features into three simple trim tiers (Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige) so you rarely get bamboozled with a ton of information. Mercedes-Benz sits at the expensive end, charging a hefty premium for the star on the hood. Look at full-size flagship sedans: a 2027 Audi A8 starts at $95,100 and a 2027 BMW 7 Series starts at $99,800, whereas a 2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class asks $112,550 before options.
The final separator is the options list. BMW and Mercedes still charge extra for driver-assistance packages, ventilated seats, and upgraded audio that easily push a $50,000 car past $62,000.
Not Every Model Depreciates At The Same Rate

New pricing aside, each brand holds up to depreciation differently. When taking all models from each brand into consideration, CarEdge’s data shows that all three brands lose more value than the average car — cars tend to lose about 45% of their value after five years on average. The source claims Audi, as a brand, depreciates by 48% after five years. Mercedes-Benz is slightly better at 46%, while BMW models lose the most value in half a decade at 50%.
Of course, each model varies from one another. For example, the Audi E-Tron GT loses about 60% of its value after five years of ownership, while the Audi A3 sedan only loses 49%. Special, rare, or otherwise desirable models like the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT hold value the best, as this example only loses 37% of its original value.
