The Japanese Sedan That Quietly Embarrasses Premium Rivals

Somewhere on a dealer lot right now sits a compact sedan that costs less than a loaded BMW 3 Series and revs to a screaming 7,100 rpm. It sounds like it should be wearing a muscle car badge. It embarrasses cars that cost more and carry fancier logos. And the company that built it just killed it off without so much as a farewell tour. You have almost certainly walked past one and never noticed. That is more or less the whole point.

The Sport Sedan Forgot How To Be Fun

The compact performance sedan used to be the enthusiast’s default choice. Then the entire class quietly changed its mind about what mattered. Turbos replaced revs. Screens replaced switches. Numbers on a spec sheet replaced the noise that made you take the long way home.

    What The Class Gave Up

The Mercedes-AMG C43 is the clearest example. It used to run a six-cylinder. Now it runs a 2.0-liter turbocharged four with an electric-assisted turbo, and it pipes much of its engine noise through the speakers. BMW’s M340i is better off, with a genuinely lovely turbocharged straight-six. Audi’s S4 leans on a turbo V6 that gets the job done without ever making you feel much of anything. Every one of them is fast. Very few of them are memorable. The class formula became simple: more torque, less character, and a bigger touchscreen to distract you from the trade.

    The One That Refused

One car ignored the memo entirely. While everyone else downsized and turbocharged, it held on to a naturally aspirated V8. Not a turbo six doing an impression of a V8, but an actual eight-cylinder that makes its peak power right up near the redline, the way engines did before boost flattened everything into the same low-down shove. It is slower on paper than some of its rivals. It is dated inside. And it is comfortably the most joyful thing in the segment. It is also Japanese, which is the part almost nobody saw coming.

Meet The Lexus IS 500, The V8 That Should Not Exist

    2024 Lexus IS500 F Sport in tunnelLexus

The holdout is the Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance. Lexus took the 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 from the LC 500 grand tourer, the engine it calls the 2UR-GSE, and wedged it into the nose of its smallest sedan. The result makes 472 horsepower at 7,100 rpm and 395 pound-feet of torque at 4,800 rpm, sends everything to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic, and sounds like nothing else you can buy in this class. We said as much when the IS 500 first started staring down the axe.

    The Engine Nobody Else Offers

Here is the entire argument in one sentence: no rival in the segment will sell you a naturally aspirated V8. The C43 traded its six for a four. The M340i runs a turbo straight-six that, to its credit, sounds terrific, but it is still a boosted engine with its personality front-loaded and fading as the revs climb. The Lexus does the reverse. It pulls harder and sounds better the closer the needle swings to 7,100 rpm, and there is no turbo lag anywhere because there are no turbos at all. In 2026, that combination is all but extinct.

Where It Wins And Where It Loses

Be honest about the losses first. The M340i is quicker to 60 mph, at roughly 4.1 seconds against the Lexus’s claimed 4.4. The C43 is right in the mix too. The Germans also bring sharper infotainment, newer cabins, and more usable rear seats, while the IS rides on a platform that is more than a decade old. On the spec sheet and the stopwatch, the Lexus comes up short.

Now the wins. For around $59,500, 472 horsepower is a lot of engine for the money, and it undercuts a comparably equipped M340i on horsepower per dollar. It revs like nothing else in the class. And it hands back the one thing turbocharging quietly confiscated: a long, linear, building rush of power tied to a soundtrack you genuinely want to hear. The Germans win the argument on paper. The Lexus wins the drive home. Narrow the terms to what an enthusiast actually feels, and it is not close.

Why You Never Heard About It

Front 3/4 shot of the 2025 Lexus IS500Garret Donahue | TopSpeed

A 472 horsepower V8 sedan should be a headline act. This one was closer to a rumor, and that was nobody’s fault but Lexus’. Park an IS 500 next to a base IS, and most people cannot tell them apart. The V8 hides behind a set of quad exhaust tips, a small badge, and very little else. That restraint is genuinely cool if you know what you are looking at. It is also commercial poison. Nobody cross-shops a car they cannot pick out of a parking lot, and to most buyers the IS 500 looked like the sensible Lexus their neighbor leases.

    Lexus Barely Tried

Front 3/4 action shot of 2025 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance driving on roadChris Chin | TopSpeed

The IS 500 never got a real marketing push. It sat quietly at the top of an aging lineup while Lexus steered its attention and its budget toward hybrids and SUVs. When the end came, there was no proper send-off, just a limited Ultimate Edition and a lineup tidy-up for 2026. Officially, that reads as a clean business decision. Read it a little closer, and it looks like a car the company never fully committed to selling. It is hard to be embarrassed by a rival that forgot to tell anyone it existed.

    And Now It’s Gone

    Side-shot 2024 Lexus IS500 F Sport driving on roadLexus

Here is the twist that gives this whole story its sting. The IS 500 is not merely overlooked. It is discontinued. For 2026, Lexus refreshed the IS and quietly deleted the V8. The range is now the IS 350 F Sport and F Sport Design, both running a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 311 horsepower. It is a perfectly pleasant engine. What it isn’t is a 7,100-rpm V8. Lexus frames the move as streamlining the lineup rather than any comment on sales, which fits a car it never marketed properly to begin with. Either way, the naturally aspirated V8 compact sport sedan is now extinct, and the IS 500 was the last one standing.

This Makes The Used Ones Fascinating

    2025 Lexus IS 500 interiorLexus

Everything that made the IS 500 a tough sell when it was new, the dated cabin, the price, the near-invisibility, matters far less on the used market. What remains is the part that always mattered: a stout Toyota-Lexus V8, rear-wheel drive, and a noise nobody else builds anymore. As the rest of the class turbocharges and electrifies, the last naturally aspirated V8 in the segment only grows more special. The car the market ignored when it was new could easily become the one enthusiasts hunt down once it is gone for good.

The IS 500 Is Worth Chasing Now That It’s Gone

Side view of the 2025 Lexus IS500 parked in front of hillsGarret Donahue | TopSpeed

On paper, the case against the IS 500 writes itself. It isn’t that much cheaper than the M340i and trails it to 60 mph. Its cabin sits a decade behind the Germans on screens and switchgear. Lexus barely marketed it and then discontinued it, which tells you exactly how much faith the company put in the numbers. Shop with a spreadsheet, and you buy the BMW, drive home, and never think about the Lexus again.

But numbers were never the point of this car. The IS 500 is for the driver who cares more about how an engine sounds at 7,000 rpm than about a tenth of a second at the strip, and on that measure, it has no rival left, because there is no rival left. Everything else in the class turbocharged, downsized, or quietly died. Strip away the new-car price premium that always worked against it, and a used IS 500 becomes exactly what it should have been all along: the last naturally aspirated V8 sedan in its class, waiting for the enthusiasts who overlooked it to come around. The Germans won the showroom. The Lexus wins the long game.
