While electric vehicles aren’t exactly the flavor of the month right now, they do offer some decent benefits over their internal combustion-engined rivals that make them a tantalizing option. Their simplicity means there is little to go wrong mechanically, while their instantaneous power delivery and lack of a proper gearbox make them excellent for zipping around town without having to constantly row through the gears. Their general unpopularity, which has been led by their elevated MSRPs and relative lack of mileage they offer, and further compromised by a still sub-par EV charging infrastructure, has also meant they’ve depreciated by insane levels.
This makes them a pretty bad deal if you’re looking at buying a brand-new car. Those after a used one are in the catbird seat however, with some upmarket models now selling for budget vehicle prices. The Jaguar I-Pace has proven a popular specimen in this regard, due to its classy styling and cabin, as well as its engaging performance. The trouble is, they may be extremely cheap on the used market, but there are some key issues you need to be aware of before you splash the cash.
A Used I-Pace Stands Out As A Great Bargain

When it was new, the I-Pace was a pretty expensive machine, as you can expect from something with a Jaguar badge. The final model year 2024 version retailed for a stiff $72,000, putting it squarely in high-end luxury SUV territory. Thankfully, this isn’t much of a problem for used buyers anymore. Being a Jaguar luxury car – which tend to swiftly plunge in value on their own – as well as an EV, depreciation has well and truly worked its magic on the British beast.
The CarBuzz Marketplace reports that early 2019 and 2020 examples can be had for around $20,000, or in other words, around a third of their original value just half a decade after they were constructed. Later specimens are unsurprisingly worth more, but even 2023/2024 cars can be picked up for around $30k on average. This will get you a middling-mileage I-Pace that has been looked after, so you could spend considerably less than this if you don’t mind opting for a more well-traveled car.
You Get A Lot Of Performance For Your Money

Whichever way you look at it, $20k to $30k for a modern Jaguar luxury SUV represents pretty stunning value, especially when it cost double or triple that just a handful of years ago. Additionally, this isn’t some used Nissan Leaf that takes 10 seconds to hit 60 mph, or can travel for 40 miles before leaving you stranded. The I-Pace comes with a dual-motor powertrain that shares a strong 394 horsepower and 512 lb-ft of torque between all four wheels, which will rocket you past the 60 mph barrier in 4.5 seconds.

That’s a tantalizing turn of pace for a car so cheap, and it gets better. While not amazing, the I-Pace could travel up to 252 miles on a full charge, which is significantly better than various cheaper brand-new EVs on the market. That said, it’s very unlikely you’ll ever be able to cover this amount of ground with your used machine.
The I-Pace Has Suffered From Various Concerning Battery Issues

Since the I-Pace went out of production in 2024, the only way you’ll get one is by trawling the used market. As a result, the battery packs found in these specimens won’t be running at full health, so you won’t be able to match the sort of mileage it could have when it was shiny and new. In addition, various battery problems have meant that the peak ranges of the various I-Paces available in the US have been artificially limited.

The problem stemmed from battery cells supplied by LG Energy Solution in the pack assembly used by Jaguar. The cells within the battery could overheat and, in severe cases, lead to a fire. A similar LG-supplied battery-cell issue also affected the Chevrolet Bolt. Following a series of fires involving the I-Pace – which luckily resulted in no injuries – Jaguar recalled around 6,400 cars built between 2019 and 2023 to have software updates applied. It updated the battery energy control module to prevent the battery pack from overheating.
Further Battery Problems Have Plagued Jag’s Plush SUV

It doesn’t end there either, as further recalls regarding the battery pack have been issued since then. Jaguar later found that the fix didn’t cure the problem on 258 early examples of the car from 2019, so owners were told to only charge their vehicles to 75% capacity to reduce the risk of any fire breaking out. Unable to cure the problem, Jaguar ultimately repurchased each of these vehicles from their owners to prevent the issue from occurring again.
Further to this, yet another battery-related recall was published by Jaguar in April 2026. It was found that the 2023 fix hadn’t worked on 2,200 of the 2020/2021 I-Paces, so the affected machines needed to be equipped with a dealer-issued software update that also limited the battery’s peak charge to 90%. This was frustrating for owners, considering they immediately lost 10% of their overall range. Later cars aren’t yet restricted in the same way and there may be the risk that the problem could flare up again in the coming months and years as these vehicles age. As a general rule, a battery with around 200 miles of total range left would be reduced to a peak range of 180 miles.
An I-Pace Isn’t The Cheapest EV To Run

The bad news continues on from there, too. Not only do used buyers have to contend with potential battery problems and a loss of peak range as a result, but the I-Pace is pretty costly to maintain. Being a luxury carmaker, Jaguar tends to charge more to carry out any remedial work to its offerings, as opposed to marques that cater to the cheaper end of the market, such as Hyundai and Tesla.
CarEdge reports that you should expect to spend a stiff $17,224 to maintain the I Pace over a 10-year period, which is $4,771 worse off than the industry average. A Tesla Model Y SUV, meanwhile, should only demand around $4k from your wallet.
The American challenger also has a 31% lower chance of suffering from a major problem than the Jag. It may be a bargain on the used market, but it needs to be when it costs so much to keep running sweetly.
The I-Pace’s Various Issues Mean It’ll Cost More To Insure

Not to rub salt in the wound, but there are more added costs to consider when buying a used I-Pace. Due to being a desirable high-end Jaguar, which has a higher chance of being stolen, as well as being victim to the various battery issues it has faced over the years, you’ll need to spend more than most cars on insurance. CarEdge reports that you’ll have to shell out around $4,651 per year on average in this regard, which is a commanding $1,500 higher than the industry average.
How do you turn a large fortune into a small one? By buying a used I-Pace, evidently.

Buying a new EV can be a strain on your bank account, so this is how much a ten-year-old used example will cost on the secondhand market.
It’s difficult to find a modern family-friendly machine with the same level of pace and class that the I-Pace can provide, and at such a low price. Just be sure that any specimen you’re looking to buy has had the necessary recall work carried out effectively, and you should be good. The I-Pace doesn’t suffer from a wide range of problems aside from the well-documented battery woes, and some owners and reviewers consider it more dependable than certain older Jaguar ICE models.
Securing a slice of the high life can be costly, but the I-Pace offers you the chance of doing it with a much smaller outlay than you might have first expected. At least initially, as we recommend having some cash put aside for when the time comes to have it serviced.
