Roadsters are a shrinking segment in the new-car market, with only a handful of models left. Buyers could opt for the current Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible, Mazda MX-5 Miata RF, or a couple of other high-performance models from Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin. The Miata RF is the cheapest of the bunch, but if you’re looking for a little more power, or even just a way to stand out from the common rabble at your local Cars and Coffee, you’ll have to look to the used market.

Cadillac once offered a true competitor in this segment: the XLR and its high-performance variant, the XLR-V. Both models are fairly rare today. That said, the XLR-V is not easy to come by these days with such a low production volume to begin with. The mid-2000s set a precedent for American performance cars. Buyers at the time could choose among models like the Chrysler Crossfire SRT-6, Dodge Magnum SRT-8, Cadillac CTS-V, and more.

The XLR-V didn’t find its audience at launch, since it was surrounded by so many competitive models at the time, but collectors and enthusiasts have slowly realized what they’re missing. Here’s what the current XLR-V market looks like, why it’s sought after, how it undercuts other performance models from the time, and more.

All specs are sourced directly from the manufacturer. Used car prices vary depending on factors such as mileage, condition, and more; the prices quoted in this article may not represent your example’s value, but are averages intended to be references.

Enter the XLR-V: The Supercharged Secret

The Cadillac XLR-V is a supercharged, high-performance variant of the existing XLR convertible. While the original XLR was introduced for the 2004 model year, the XLR-V didn’t become available until the 2006 MY. Both models utilize versions of General Motors’ most notorious V8 engine: the Northstar.

This engine has been used in everything from SUVs, like the first-gen Cadillac SRX, to sedans, like the STS-V, DTS, Oldsmobile Aurora, and the 7th-gen DeVille, and even the 1999 Shelby Super Series 1. The Northstar V8 went through multiple iterations. It was initially considered General Motors’ most complex engine, as it’s characterized by its double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, an aluminum engine block, and aluminum cylinder heads. The engine even ranked among the Ward’s Auto World “10 Best Engines in North America” awards in 1996 and 1997, despite its issues that we’ll discuss later.

Powertrain aside, the XLR-V’s outputs and speed weren’t enough to pull buyers in. Production was already a low-volume effort, then, with few buyers ordering models, custom orders were minimal as well. Since it wasn’t all that desirable to begin with, the XLR-V slid under the radar for over a decade before collectors realized what they had missed.

Cadillac’s V-Series has been responsible for serious American speed for over 20 years – let’s see which are the quickest to 60 mph.

Both versions of the XLR used a Northstar V8. However, the standard roadster used a 4.6-liter naturally aspirated variant that made less power and resulted in slower performance. Cadillac’s basic roadster was intended to rival the Mercedes-Benz SL, Jaguar XK8, and Lexus SC430. Buyers found the regular XLR to be more of a grand touring car than a sports car. Nevertheless, the regular XLR had been around for longer and sold far more units by the end of its production run after the 2009 model year.

Buyers today can find a 2009 XLR for around the $20,000 mark – they’re not all that rare, and not especially sought after, which keeps prices affordable.

    The Bargain Revelation

    2006 – 2009 Cadillac XLR-V – Side angle in silver while drivingCadillac

According to Classic.com, the average XLR-V sale price comes out to about $36,867. That includes 26 sales spanning from early June 2025 until today. Sure, you could find a base model for $20k and save over 10 grand, but you’d be missing out on the added power and performance of a supercharger. It also gained a more aggressive appearance, with the signature V mesh grille treatment, bigger wheels, a more aggressive hood, and a body kit. You also get bigger brakes, a revised suspension setup, and a more advanced six-speed automatic to handle the extra torque.

The most recent sale was for a red 2006 example with only 9,000 miles that passed over its title for $44,000. That said, somebody got lucky enough to find a 2008 example with 76,000 miles about a year ago that finalized its auction price at $23,000.

Another possible replacement for the XLR-V is the first-generation CTS-V. Newer generations of this powerful sedan are worth about the same – if not more – as the XLR-V, but the CTS-V that sold from 2004 through 2007 is currently only worth about $17,821. It used a larger 6.0-liter V8 that made 400 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque.

Rarity and the 2009 Sweet Spot

    2006 – 2009 Cadillac XLR-V – rear 3/4 angle in silver while drivingCadillac

We briefly mentioned production numbers earlier. The XLR-V’s low production helps the roadster hold value today, even if it didn’t sell well when it was new. Back in the day, the 2009 XLR had an MSRP of $82,690, which comes out to about $128k when adjusted for inflation – the XLR-V was far more expensive at $104,215, or $161k in 2026 (just a few grand below the cost of a 2026 Escalade-V today).

Cadillac’s timing with this expensive model during an economic recession didn’t bode well with buyers. That resulted in low production volumes; the entire XLR-V’s run from 2006 through 2009 saw 2,188 units, with the 2009 model year coming in at just 239 units. If you’re a collector looking for the rarest XLR-V that could hold its value, try to find a 2009 option.

    What Smart Buyers Should Know

    Northstar V8 Reliability Reputation

As impressively powerful and versatile as the Northstar V8 is, it came with a handful of infamous problems to be aware of. From the engine’s debut through 2004, it suffered from head gasket failure due to the head bolts stretching, which could cause catastrophic failure. Fortunately, the XLR and XLR-V came out after the issue was solved with stronger head bolts. The engine blocks are made of cast aluminum alloy, which cooled unevenly during casting, resulting in internal cracks that could weaken over time or seep oil, as well.

Looking for an affordable rear-wheel-drive sports sedan powered by a supercharged V8 engine? Set your sights on the Cadillac STS-V.

Most of these issues are prominent in earlier versions of the Northstar V8 – older models like the XLR and XLR-V shouldn’t have to worry about stretching head bolts as much. Nevertheless, it’s an issue to be aware of.

    Cadillac XLR-V Maintenance Costs

2006 – 2009 Cadillac XLR-V interior detail shot of the shifterCadillac

Since the XLR-V was sold in such low volumes, and those that are floating around the world are usually kept at relatively low mileage, pinning a number on its maintenance costs is particularly difficult. However, the regular XLR is common enough to give us an estimate. According to RepairPal, the standard XLR costs owners about $741 per year to maintain and repair on average. The source lists some of the XLR’s most expensive repairs as:

    • Fuel Level Sending Unit Replacement: $2,242–$3,147
    • Coolant Change: $602–$688
    • HVAC Blend Door Actuator Replacement: $596–$834

The XLR and XLR-V should be free from the old Northstar V8’s head gasket failure and bad head bolts, but these issues could cost $3,000 minimum for new head gaskets, granted the rest of the engine was okay. Owners could need an entirely new engine with that type of failure.

A High-Performance Roadster Unlike the Rest

    2006 – 2009 Cadillac XLR-V – rear 3/4 angle in silver while drivingCadillac

Buyers today must not care about the potential unreliability, since the XLR-V is still worth so much. With recent auctions selling for over $40,000, and the average reaching the mid-$30s, the XLR-V remains a desirable collector’s car. Its Northstar V8 has a mixed reputation, to be fair; owners tend to only report the worst issues, leaving the unproblematic engines unaccounted for. That said, XLR-V owners don’t typically drive their cars often enough to experience such expensive issues. So few examples were sold that those remaining can be difficult to find. Classic.com only logs 26 sales in the last 12 months. The XLR-V could be a future classic just waiting to gain more value.
