Ford has come up with an unusual pickup truck idea that could make certain worksite chores a lot easier. A recently granted patent from Ford Global Technologies describes a system that would allow someone standing behind a truck to move it forward or backward in small increments without climbing into the cab. The concept is aimed at situations where a truck needs to be repositioned repeatedly, such as spreading gravel, mulch, dirt, or other materials from the bed.
The clever part is how Ford proposes controlling the truck. Instead of relying on a smartphone app, key fob, or separate remote, the system could use the deployable grab handle already associated with the tailgate step on some Ford F-Series trucks. Sensors in the handle would recognize pressure from the operator and send a request to the vehicle’s controller. Depending on how the system is configured, pressing harder could potentially make the truck travel farther or increase the frequency of short, controlled movements.
Ford’s patent, titled “Systems and Methods for Moving a Vehicle Using Externally Mounted HMI,” also accounts for the obvious safety concerns that come with moving a vehicle while nobody is sitting behind the wheel. The system could require the operator to deliberately press and release the handle before the truck responds, while another safeguard could operate much like a dead-man switch. Parking sensors, cameras, automatic braking, and other existing driver-assistance hardware could also play an important role in keeping the truck from moving into an obstacle or person.
It is a niche idea, but there are situations where it could make plenty of sense. Anyone who has unloaded landscaping material from a pickup knows the routine of moving a little material, getting back into the truck, creeping forward several feet, climbing out again, and repeating the process. Allowing one person to stand at the rear and inch the truck along could turn what is often a two-person job into something a single operator could handle. A similar system could potentially prove useful around farms, construction sites, or even when making small positioning adjustments near a trailer.
As with virtually every automotive patent, there is no guarantee Ford will ever put this feature into production. Automakers routinely patent ideas to protect technology that may never reach a showroom. Still, this one feels less like science fiction and more like Ford looking for another practical trick to add to its trucks. The company has spent years finding new ways to make tailgates, onboard power systems, trailer technology, and bed accessories more useful. Letting an owner literally push a handle and have the truck creep forward might sound strange, but for the right kind of job, it could end up being surprisingly handy.
