The Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing Is A Better BMW M3 For $15,000 Less

When it comes to sports sedans, there’s probably no better choice than the BMW M3. Since the 1980s, it’s backed up its iconic status with supercar-beating performance and versatility, but the market is more competitive now than ever. Cadillac is one of its biggest rivals here in the States – and that’s because the CT4-V Blackwing offers the same power for $15,000 less.

So why does BMW charge so much more for its evergreen sedan? Some might say you’re only paying for the badge, while others will say that nothing compares to how a BMW handles. We’re taking a deep dive into these two cars to see where that extra money goes – or whether you should simply save some money and buy American.

    Same Power, Smaller Price

The first thing you’re going to want in your sports sedan is power – and both of these cars have that in spades. The Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing, which goes for $62,700 at MSRP, comes with only one power output option, thanks to its 3.6L twin-turbo V6 engine. Its 472 horsepower and 445 pound-feet of torque are yours to harness, which is actually almost exactly the same power output as the BMW M3. That car has a 3.0L twin-turbo inline-six.

The key difference, though, is the level of customization available with the BMW’s performance outputs. The base model makes 473 hp, but the Competition models make either 503 or 523 hp depending on RWD or AWD configurations. These models are significantly more expensive, though, and you lose the purity of rear-wheel drive. The BMW ($78,400 MSRP) gets to 60 mph only 0.2 seconds faster (4.1 seconds as opposed to 4.3 seconds), but you’ll probably never feel that difference.

Both of these cars are about how they make you feel, which is why they come with six-speed manual transmissions, sport brakes, and adaptive suspension as standard. Cadillac claims its adaptive system – Magnetic Ride Control – is the fastest-reacting system in the world, and it has been known to be softer than rivals when simply cruising on the highway. For that, the Caddy also has SuperCruise hands-free driving, which helps take the strain off on a road trip.

“While the Cadillac’s twin-turbocharged V6 may not offer the turbine smoothness of an inline-six, it works very well alongside the standard manual transmission to get the little Caddy up to speed in between corners. It’s the last true compact sports sedan, and it’s a blast to drive in almost any situation.” – Brett Evans, senior road tester, CarBuzz

If all you want is power and driving experience, you can’t go wrong with saving some money and going with the CT4-V Blackwing. The manual is engaging, the limited-slip differential means it’s controllable, and when you’re not traveling at speed, the suspension is more compliant than the race-ready BMW M3.

The Caddy Looks A Bit Smarter

We were all quite surprised when we first saw the kidney grilles on the current-generation BMW M3. Usually, an M3 would have pretty subtle styling cues compared to the regular 3-Series, but this car went fully in on the aggressiveness for cooling and design purposes. It has divided opinion, and that’s why the more affordable Cadillac’s styling appeals more to most people’s tastes. Yes, there are occasional aero flicks and spoilers, but we think it works better as a sleeper sports sedan than the German alternative.

Even the color and aesthetic choices lean toward subtlety on the Cadillac, while BMW’s palette is designed to attract attention through bright colors. Both let you change the brake caliper colors, and if you want to show people you have a Blackwing, you can option some decals and carbon fiber packages.

The same theme continues inside as the Cadillac retains physical controls to aid usability when on the move. It may look more dated than the BMW, but we’d rather have buttons that are easy to press while driving than a display that looks cleaner when turned off. Both can be chosen with bucket seats, although the BMW’s are more expensive and feature an odd central element that can be uncomfortable to use with a manual.

Like the exterior, the inside of the BMW looks racier, especially when you choose the expensive carbon fiber trim options. Cadillac looks to be leaning into the “everyday” usage of the sedan, with accessories for all-weather cargo mats, cargo nets, and even organizers. They might not be the first thing you associate with a sports car, but they’re genuinely useful for a daily driver.

The Caddy Is Stacked With Features

Even when saving money by choosing the Cadillac, you aren’t sacrificing many creature comforts. The Cadillac has a 15-speaker sound system, heated front seats, and wireless charging. We’d also recommend optioning the affordable climate package, which includes ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and even lumbar massage – a feature not available on the BMW at all. Just ventilated seating costs $500 on the BMW.

“The biggest dynamic advantage of the Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing is its stiff Alpha architecture and genuinely compact size and weight. Compared to the G80 M3, the Blackwing is lighter on its feet and feels more responsive.” – Brett Evans, senior road tester, CarBuzz

For performance, both vehicles can be fitted with lap time optimizers and analysis, but Cadillac’s system is more advanced and can record video as well as data. It’s more expensive, but if you’re going to be doing heavy track work, it’ll be a worthy purchase. To make the launch even quicker, the Cadillac can also lock the front wheels to create a huge burnout that warms up the tires. There’s no line lock on the M3.

In terms of interior space, there is a notable difference. In the second row, the CT4-V Blackwing has 33.4 inches of legroom and 36.5 inches of headroom, while the BMW has 35.6 and 37.8 inches, respectively. The BMW also has more trunk space at 13 cubic feet, a sizable difference when it serves as your daily driver. Is that worth the price? We wouldn’t say so, and if you’re particularly concerned about space, you’d be better served by the BMW M5 and CT5-V instead.

Get The Cadillac Fast – They’re Fleeting

Something we haven’t mentioned is the fact that while the BMW M3 will soldier on in 2027 and then further on with a new generation, the CT4-V’s future hangs in the balance. It has been officially discontinued after 2026, and GM has not released many details about its successor. All we currently know is that its larger sibling, the CT5-V, will return as a gas-powered sedan in the near future. Order books are currently closed for the CT4, although some inventory remains.

The BMW might have the name, the history, and the more in-your-face design, but the more affordable Cadillac is definitely not far behind. With similar features and more affordable options, we’d recommend the CT4-V Blackwing to anyone looking for a capable daily driver. If you’re chasing absolute performance, the M3’s more powerful sibling with a Competition badge might be better for you – but the base model looks overpriced parked next to its American rival.

Resale Value May Help The Caddy

While many say BMW’s best M3 came in the 2000s, Cadillac’s sports sedans only get better, and that will help the CT4-V’s resale value down the road. Given Cadillac’s F1 team, the special plaque inside the vehicle with the VIN number, and the fact it may be the last small performance sedan for a while, there’s a good chance that it will come out on top of the BMW M3 in a few years.

In our research, we could only find a few listings for the current and previous model year, and all are selling for more than the car’s base price. Given the car’s slowing sales toward the end of its life, these will probably be the most valuable in a couple of years, although early models can be found for just under $50,000. With GM’s shift towards more electric vehicles, don’t be surprised if the Cadillac stands as one of the last bastions of pure RWD sedan fun.
