Since last year, Subaru has been down to just one sedan. In September 2025, the company’s Indiana factory produced the very last Legacy, leaving the WRX as the last four-door with a trunk. Despite a whole year passing since the last car rolled off the line, Subaru is still managing to sell Legacy sedans. It’s not selling many, but any sales are still a surprise.
What’s even more shocking, though, is that this dead sedan is not the worst-selling Subaru so far this year.

Legacy Sales Are Down, But Not Out
In August, Subaru sold not one, not two, but five whole Legacy sedans. Those Subarus were waiting for homes quite a while, considering the production date of the final car. That’s one of the lower monthly sales tallies this year, though. In July, Subaru sold 20, and in June, a whopping 56 went to new owners.
Naturally, monthly sales in single and double digits are way down compared to last year when new cars were still coming off the line. Sales in August last year were 2,087, meaning that they were down by 99.8% for this August. Total sales for 2026 have reached 2,206 units, which is down by 85.5% versus last year through August.
What Could Possibly Be Selling Worse Than A Dead Car?
The truly wild part of the Legacy sales story is thatit’s still not the worst seller so far this year. That honor actually goes to the BRZ. Its total sales have only hit 2,020. It’s even down 4.1% compared to last year’s sales through August. However, this will probably be the last month that the Legacy dodges the bottom sales slot.
Subaru did sell 235 BRZs in August, and if it performs similarly next month, it will have matched the Legacy’s current total. Legacy sales will probably continue in that single-digit range, or even finally hit 0, since the remaining inventory is running out. Even if the BRZ somehow doesn’t match the Legacy in September, it will surely overtake the old sedan in October, simply because there’s a steady supply and demand for them (even if they’re both a bit small).

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:
While people are still finding Legacy sedans to buy, the model was far from the brand’s bestseller. Excluding EVs and performance cars, it was actually the worst selling model, but it lacked any kind of halo effect like the WRX and BRZ, or represented an entry into a new market like the Solterra.
Now, a bit more than 15,000 sales last year through August was significant, but the car was taking up some production capacity at the plant in Indiana. Getting rid of it could free up capacity for better sellers such as the Forester, Crosstrek, and Ascent. Subaru has even added Forester hybrid production to the plant. The Forester and Crosstrek specifically top Subaru’s charts, and the Forester is up by 15.1% compared to last year. That’s a difference of more than 18,000 cars, more than the number of Legacy sedans sold last year in the same time frame.
Subaru let the Legacy go so that its more successful models had room to grow.
