Get Spyglass: Spy photos straight to your inbox

Your exclusive peek at future cars and secret prototypes, fresh from our globetrotting spy photographer.

Did you wake up Friday morning to DMs from your car buddies alerting you to a new four-door Chevy Camaro prototype sighting? Well, don’t get too worked up over this particular collection of pixels, boys and girls. It’s a fake.

Between our more formal spy contacts and the many eager enthusiasts who read The Drive, we see plenty of camouflaged prototypes on a regular basis—enough to spot a few dead giveaways in this purported spotting. But the first big red flag here is this prototype’s “manufacturer plate.” Here’s the problem: The formatting is wrong for an Illinois manufacturer plate, and they certainly don’t have Michigan-blue lettering and font.

It doesn’t stop there. The mixed camo materials aren’t a red flag on their own (we’ve seen that sort of thing on GM prototypes before), but the draped portions end crisply at the body panel joins. Not so much. Not to mention it’s early int he game and this thing has limited camo in the photo to begin with. And the random cutout on the front fender looks an awful lot like an AI prompt led to an unintended third door handle that we’re just supposed to ignore. Also, “Test Vehicle” sticker? Get outta here. This ain’t the Nürburgring.

Let’s set all of that aside for a moment and just think about this for a second: Somehow, somebody managed to capture this elusive prototype in a single (and borderline immaculate) car-to-car photograph during their commute. Just one. Sus, right? But just to be sure, we reached out to a GM spokesperson to see if we could get somebody to comment on the record.

“We don’t have any announcements to share on speculative reports regarding potential future product,” a GM spokesperson told The Drive.

That may sound noncommittal, but the use of the word “speculation” is doing heavy lifting here. Sorry, folks. There may be a four-door Camaro prototype out there somewhere, but this thing ain’t it.
