UPDATE: 2026/08/16 10:30 EST BY SEAN MCMANUS

    Off-Road Comparison: AT4 VS Z71

We added a section to compare the two SUV’s off-road trims and their standard features.

In a world of hybrid engines and alternative fuels, it feels like GMC and Chevrolet are keeping it simple. The GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe are big, three-row full-sized SUVs with traditional gas-guzzling engine choices, even in 2026. With enough space to fit your entire family and multiple trims to choose from, it seems like there is a Yukon/Tahoe for everybody.

On paper, they share the same platform and engines, so how do you decide which one is better? Luckily for you, this article is a comprehensive look at the 2026 Tahoe vs Yukon, their differences, and which one is more deserving of your money.

All information has been sourced from the manufacturer or test drive experience, where available. All prices listed are MSRP, which does not include any offers or additional fees. Automakers reserve the right to update pricing at their own discretion and without notice.

Both the 2026 Yukon and Tahoe are essentially carryover models from last year, when they both received updates inside and outside. Nevertheless, they are still some of the best full-size SUVs on sale at the moment, though they target different buyers. The Chevy Tahoe is more of a mainstream offering with a lower starting price point. It starts at $60,700 for the LS Trim with the 5.3L V8 and rear-wheel drive.

The GMC Yukon is a more premium offering, with a starting price of $69,600. For that money, you get a more upscale feeling interior, albeit the same platform and powertrains. Both SUVs get a plethora of trims for road use, as well as off-road specific trims to make them truly capable of traversing any terrain. The Yukon gets the AT4 trims that add all-terrain tires, skid plates and increases the front approach angle, whereas, the Tahoe gets the Z71 trim that adds a two-speed transfer case, skid plates, hill descent control, etc.

Top-of-the-range trims are aimed towards on-road driving, and cross the $100K mark for the Yukon. This is a whopping $20k more than the top-tier Tahoe High Country, which has an MSRP of $80,700. Both trims have available adaptive air suspension and the Tahoe gets Magnetic Ride control with Super Cruise functionality. The Yukon gets all the interior niceties like wood trim and an executive second row with heating, ventilation and massage.

    Z71: $70,700

    Denali Ultimate: $103,900

    Premier: $75,600

    High Country: $80,700

While the entry point of the GMC Yukon may be higher, it has a more stable price trend on the second-hand market when compared to the Chevrolet Tahoe, according to our price trends graph.

Both SUVs get the same three motors, and the same performance figures as well. The entry level trims get the 5.3L V8 as standard, with adequate performance for most use cases. The top trims get the bigger 6.2L V8 with more power and similar efficiency scores. The diesel is the most interesting, as it produces the most torque and offers the best fuel economy.

While they may be based on the Silverado pickup truck and its body-on-frame chassis, both SUVs are still plenty capable on the road, with their independent rear suspension, as we found out in our test drive of the 2025 GMC Yukon.

“It sounds great, delivers a healthy amount of torque, and the 10-speed automatic is so well-calibrated, it never feels jerky or delayed when you need a downshift.”

    – Jared Rosenholtz, Former Editor-At-Large, CarBuzz

In terms of size, you guessed it, they are extremely similar here as well. While they are both massively long and wide, at 210–211 inches and 81 inches, respectively, they are pretty much the same in terms of other external dimensions.

While their exterior design details are highly subjective and dependent on which you prefer, their off-road trims do add a lot of bulk and aggression to each SUV. Both of them get different front fascias to increase their approach angles, and distinct skid plates.

If you are looking for even more space, which is commendable, GMC also offers a Yukon XL, with an extended wheelbase. Chevrolet’s offering is called the Suburban, which is why we are not covering their dimensions in this article.

    Real-World Ownership Costs

The least-efficient engine options are tied between both the V8 offerings, with an EPA-estimated city/highway/combined rating of 15/20/17 mpg. While these numbers may change with each trim and model, these are the highest averages for these engines among both SUVs. The most-efficient engine is the 3.0L inline-six-cylinder diesel, with a rating of 22/26/24 mpg. While they may not be the most efficient per liter, the SUVs’ massive fuel tanks make up for any doubts you may have about their long-distance capabilities. Both the Tahoe and Yukon are rated to have a total range north of 550 miles, with the Yukon XL being rated for 644 miles on a single tank.

With high MSRPs comes more state-of-the-art, but complicated technology. Both GMC and Chevy offer a three-year or 36,000 mile limited warranty and up to five years or 60,000 miles for the powertrain. However, keep in mind that both SUVs have been subject to three recalls, including a “Do Not Drive” warning for front and rear wheel lock-ups, according to the NHTSA. Reliability may not be a strong suit for these full-size SUVs, so make sure to do your due diligence beforehand.

GMC Yukon vs Chevrolet Tahoe Interior Comparison

The interior is the biggest difference between the Yukon and Tahoe. This is also where the extra money is justified for the Yukon. The Tahoe has the less premium feeling interior between the two, but is still well-equipped for its price. The 2025 update brought a massive 17.7-inch horizontal central touchscreen. The Tahoe can also seat up to nine people in its base trim with the front bench seat equipped, whereas the Yukon can only seat eight.

The Yukon features a 16.8-inch central touchscreen in vertical orientation, along with an 11-inch driver’s display. Each trim adds comfort features such as 16-way power front seats with massage, a 22-speaker Bose audio system, and executive seating for the second row with heating, ventilation and cooling.

The third row is also big enough for adults, with both SUVs’ 123 cu-ft of maximum cargo capacity. They feature the same 25.5 cu-ft of trunk space with all three rows up. If you want a more premium interior, the GMC is a better equipped offering.

    Off-Road Comparison: AT4 VS Z71

2024 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71 Exterior front 3/4 on dirt trailChevrolet

Neither the Tahoe Z72 nor the Yukon AT4 are the most capable off-roaders. If you want a three-row off-road SUV, we recommend the Toyota Sequoia (or you could settle for a two-row model, of which there are plenty to choose from). Nevertheless, the Tahoe and Yukon are available with off-road trims that are more capable than their more basic or luxurious variants.

As a refresher, the Tahoe Z71 starts at $70,700 before destination and options, while the Yukon AT4 starts at $76,600. The Z71 comes with a short list of off-road upgrades that include an aluminum front skid plate and red recovery hooks inside a high-clearance front fascia. It also has an “Autotrac” two-speed active transfer case and all-terrain tires. The Yukon AT4’s upgrade list also includes a high-clearance front fascia, skid plate, and recovery hooks, plus standard magnetic ride control, an active 4wd system, and all-terrain tires.

The main difference you’re paying an extra $5,900 for comes down to interior quality. Spending more on the GMC means getting perforated leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row outboard seats, and more, while the Z71 gets regular leather and no ventilated seats.

Yukon vs Tahoe: Which One To Buy?

    2025 GMC Yukon exteriorGMC2025 – 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe 5th Gen (GMT1YC) Facelift SUV – rear 3/4 angle in silverChevrolet

The answer to that question comes down to the price difference. With the same chassis, engine options, interior space and variety of trims, the upscale interior of the GMC Yukon is one of the biggest factors contributing to the $9,000 price gap. If you value a more premium interior, the GMC Yukon is the better option here, potentially even stealing customers from the Cadillac Escalade. However, if you are budget conscious, the Chevrolet Tahoe is 90% the price of the Yukon, coming in $9,000 cheaper for the base trim. You also get the choice to seat nine passengers in the Tahoe, if you want to.

Nevertheless, if you have the money, both these SUVs are some of the best full-size SUVs currently on sale, provided their reliability does not become a major purchasing factor.
