Specialized just unveiled a new full-suspension e-bike, and here’s why it costs $13k

Specialized is pushing the lightweight e-MTB segment even further today with the launch of the new S-Works Turbo Levo R Ultralight LTD, a premium electric mountain bike that tips the scales at just 18.8 kg (41.4 lb) while still packing the company’s latest full-power drive system.

At a mere 41 lb, the new Levo R Ultralight is around five pounds lighter than the other bikes in Specialized’s recently launched Levo R lineup, making it one of the lightest full-power electric mountain bikes currently available.

Despite the featherweight build, Specialized isn’t dialing back the performance. The bike uses the company’s new Turbo 3.1 S-Works motor, producing 111 Nm of torque and up to 850 W of peak power, paired with a 600 Wh battery. Riders looking for more range can opt for a larger 840 Wh battery or add an optional 280 Wh range extender, with Specialized claiming up to 4.4 hours of ride time in the highest-capacity configuration.

The bike is built around a new FACT 11m carbon frame designed specifically for cross-country trail riding. It features 140 mm of front suspension travel, 130 mm in the rear, adjustable geometry, and Specialized’s GENIE suspension technology.

The company says that the suspension design improves traction and small-bump compliance while maintaining support deeper into the travel.

Other premium touches include integrated SWAT downtube storage, a 2.2-inch MasterMind display compatible with Apple’s Find My network, wireless SRAM XX SL Eagle Transmission shifting, Roval Control SL carbon wheels, and Trickstuff Direttissima four-piston brakes.

All of those premium components keep the pricetag ticking upwards, but that S-Works label at the front of the model should have clued you in on that piece already.

We’ve watched Specialized roll out some impressive e-bikes over the past few months and years, and this is definitely near the top of that list.

One notable addition for riders who want to get back out on the trails quickly is Specialized’s new 12-amp, 700-watt smart charger, which the company says can recharge the optional 840 Wh battery from 0-80% in under an hour. Riders can also select different charging modes, including an 80% charge limit intended to help extend long-term battery life.

Of course, all of that cutting-edge technology doesn’t come cheaply. The S-Works Turbo Levo R Ultralight LTD carries a price tag of $12,999.99, firmly placing it in halo-bike territory.

Still, for riders chasing the elusive combination of full-power assistance without the handling compromises that traditionally come with heavier e-MTBs, Specialized appears determined to prove that the two no longer have to be mutually exclusive. Just make sure you have the cash to pay for all the top-shelf components on this one, not to mention a bit of pay-to-play with the S-Works name, as well.
