It’s been two decades since Audi’s small but revolutionary A2 minicar was last on sale, but now a new generation has landed, taking the efficiency ethos of the original in a new direction. The new Audi A2 e-tron is fully electric and is billed as the most efficient vehicle ever to wear the four rings.
Numbers That Rival The Lucid Air Where It Counts

The original A2 was launched at the start of the millennium and earned praise for its streamlined, almost space-age shape and aluminum spaceframe construction, which helped keep weight down. We’re talking a curb weight of less than 2,000 pounds in some configurations. Those qualities were rare in the minicar segment, but they didn’t quite resonate with buyers, and the A2 bowed out after roughly five years without a successor.
Today, efficiency is more important than ever, but the new A2 e-tron tackles it in a different way. Instead of focusing on low weight through aluminum construction, the A2 e-tron focuses on low power consumption. Audi quotes a maximum 12.8 kilowatt-hours per 62 miles, making it the most efficient Audi ever launched, as well as more efficient than the Volkswagen ID.3, a similar-sized hatch that shares its MEB platform with the A2 e-tron, Q4 e-tron, Volkswagen ID.4, ID. Buzz.

In fact, the efficiency compares well with the roughly 14.3 kWh per 62 miles of the current efficiency king, the Lucid Air, although Audi’s rating is based on the more lenient WLTP test cycle used overseas rather than the EPA cycle used by the Lucid. Still, that’s a stellar efficiency for the segment and shows that the A2 e-tron is much more than just a clone of VW’s ID.3 hatch.
How Did Audi Do It Where Volkswagen Couldn’t?

Audi didn’t achieve the A2 e-tron’s efficiency with one big trick, but through a series of smaller improvements. Aerodynamics play a major role, with the car posting a drag coefficient of just 0.24, the best in Audi’s compact lineup. This is made possible via an available Efficiency Package that includes a controllable cooling-air intake, aero wheels, and wheel-arch gap reducers, designed to help the A2 e-tron slip through the air more cleanly. Low-rolling-resistance tires further reduce the energy needed to keep it moving.
All The Horsepower You Actually Need
The electric powertrain also gets plenty of attention. The A2 e-tron uses permanent-magnet synchronous motors with rear-wheel drive, while silicon-carbide semiconductors in the power electronics help reduce conversion losses. Buyers can choose from four power levels ranging from 167 to 322 horsepower and three battery sizes ranging from 52 to 84 kWh. The most efficient option is a 188-hp power output and 61-kwh battery. Audi estimates around 320 miles of range with this setup, though once again it is based on the more lenient WLTP test cycle.
Small Car, Big In-Car Technology
The A2 e-tron measures just 169.3 inches long, making it almost 20 inches longer than the original and similar in length to a Hyundai Kona or Nissan Kicks. This means the cabin is surprisingly spacious, offering up to 47.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. That cabin is somewhat sparse compared to most Audis, though, with the dash and doors wrapped in a fabric called Softwrap.

It makes things look a little drab, but an available panoramic glass helps add a sense of airiness. There’s some interesting storage solutions, including a magnetic fastening system called Fidlock, which comes standard and can secure items like cupholders a charging-cable bag.
Technology is one of the stronger points inside, with a standard panoramic display combining an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch touchscreen for the infotainment. Audi also includes an AI-powered assistant and an EV route planner, which can plan charging stops and condition the battery for faster charging. Standard driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, evasive assist, parking sensors, and a rearview camera. Audi also includes some of its more big-ticket tech features as options, like the handy augmented reality head-up display and matrix LED headlights.

Two decades after the original A2’s short run, the new A2 e-tron successfully revives its efficiency-focused spirit in pure electric form. While US buyers miss out, European drivers get a compact EV that prioritizes smart engineering over flash, proving once again that Audi can deliver its signature innovation even in the minicar segment.
Production will be handled at an Audi plant in Ingolstadt, Germany, and deliveries in Europe are scheduled to start late this year. Pricing in most European countries will start from 38,200 euros (approximately $44,400). Unfortunately, the A2 e-tron is not destined for the USA.
