    Getting more power from a high-performance boxer engine is becoming increasingly difficult as outputs climb beyond the 700-hp mark. More boost brings greater cylinder pressures and heat, demanding increasingly sophisticated turbocharging and thermal management to keep everything reliable.

    Porsche has taken that challenge a step further by adding hybrid assistance to extract more performance from its latest flat six. But what happens when the target moves beyond 1,000 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque, with no electric assistance allowed? At that point, is adding more boost still the smartest solution, or does adding cylinders make more sense?

    The Flat Six Is Running Out Of Easy Ways To Make More Power

    A four-figure output from a compact flat six puts extraordinary demands on virtually every part of the combustion system. As boost rises, cylinder pressures and combustion temperatures climb, placing greater loads on the pistons, rods, crankshaft and bearings while increasing the amount of heat that the cooling system must remove. At this level, simply adding boost can create a cascade of engineering challenges rather than an easy path to more power.

    There is a reason manufacturers have to address several areas simultaneously when pushing this architecture so hard. Porsche’s latest Turbo S, for example, uses strengthened cast pistons, a lightweight crankcase with enlarged ventilation chambers and motorsport-derived roller cam followers as part of its effort to cope with the loads generated by the engine. Its 3.6-liter flat-six engine, while two electric turbochargers and an electric motor help deliver 701 hp and 590 lb-ft.

    RUF has taken the unconventional route of adding cylinders, revealing its first-ever boxer eight at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Internally known as the Erprober, or Tester, the 4.8-liter B8 uses twin turbochargers to produce more than 1,000 hp and 738 lb-ft, without any hybrid assistance.

    The significance lies beyond the headline figures. Moving from six cylinders to eight increases the engine’s swept volume and gives RUF four combustion chambers per bank instead of three. That provides greater overall capacity to move air and generate power, allowing the company to pursue four-figure output through a fundamentally larger combustion engine rather than relying solely on increasingly aggressive boost levels. It is a remarkably traditional answer to a very modern power target.

    Displacement becomes particularly important when comparing two very different approaches to extracting huge outputs from a boxer engine. The B8’s 4.8 liters give it a substantial capacity advantage over the current Porsche 911 Turbo S, the 3.6-liter flat six of which produces 701 hp with the assistance of its T Hybrid system. The RUF instead gets beyond 1,000 hp from its combustion engine alone.

    That extra capacity also changes how the engine can produce its power. With eight cylinders sharing 4.8 liters, the B8 has more total swept volume through which to draw and compress air, inject fuel and generate combustion energy. The workload is also distributed across eight pistons rather than six. In principle, that gives RUF more headroom to reach its target without demanding that each cylinder produce an extreme amount of power, reducing the reliance on exceptionally high boost and cylinder pressures.

    The B8’s significance also lies in how deliberately RUF has engineered it. Its bespoke crankcase is gravity-cast from aluminum, rather than being a modified Porsche component, giving the engine a purpose-built foundation for its unusual configuration. The design also carries echoes of Porsche’s famous Mezger engines. Their reputation for robust construction made them particularly revered among enthusiasts and motorsport engineers.

    That distinction is important because the B8 is not a flat six stretched with two additional cylinders. RUF says the engine has been developed entirely in-house, representing a significant expansion of the company’s engineering capabilities. RUF has evolved from its origins as a Porsche tuner into a recognized independent manufacturer, developing its own chassis and complete vehicles. The B8 takes that progression another step, putting RUF’s own powertrain technology at the center of its future.

    RUF is also clear that the B8 is currently a development engine rather than a production powerplant. The company describes it as a dedicated testbed for technologies that could shape a future RUF model, with the prototype undergoing the sort of testing RUF says is required to balance extreme performance with durability and drivability. That makes the project as much about developing knowledge as demonstrating power.

    Adding two cylinders did not come without consequences elsewhere in the vehicle. To accommodate the B8, RUF installed the engine in a modified CTR3 development mule and stretched its wheelbase by 3.9 inches. The alteration provided the additional space needed for the larger powertrain while giving RUF a practical platform on which to continue testing the prototype.

    That modification is an important piece of physical evidence in the B8 story. RUF was not simply taking an existing Porsche-based platform and finding a way to increase its output. The engine’s dimensions were significant enough to require changes to the vehicle built around it. Adding cylinders inevitably affects the size, mounting requirements and packaging of a boxer engine, and the extended CTR3 demonstrates that those compromises were accepted as part of the engineering exercise. In other words, RUF changed the car to accommodate the engine, rather than forcing the engine to conform to an unchanged package.

    What is particularly impressive is that the strengthened and lengthened chassis does not look awkward as a result. RUF says the body was stretched by 100 mm, yet the changes remain subtle enough that the prototype initially appears to be a standard CTR3. That is not always easy to achieve when substantial structural and packaging changes are made, and it suggests RUF has managed to preserve the proportions that make the CTR3 look purposeful rather than simply modified.

    Porsche Took A Very Different Route To More Power

    Porsche’s latest flagship shows just how different the path to greater performance can be. Its 3.6-liter flat six is supported by two electric turbochargers, a 1.9 kWh battery and an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed PDK, producing 700 hp and 590 lb-ft. The earlier 991.2 GT2 RS represents a more traditional solution. Its 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat six produced 700 hp and 553 lb-ft, with Porsche increasing airflow through larger turbochargers rather than adding cylinders.

    Together, they illustrate two stages of Porsche’s approach to extracting more from the boxer six. The GT2 RS pushed the combustion architecture harder, while the latest Turbo S supplements it with electrification and increasingly sophisticated turbocharging. The RUF approach takes the opposite path: rather than adding complexity around the six, it increases the size of the combustion engine itself.

    There is an important distinction in what Porsche’s latest system is actually doing, too. Its electric turbochargers can recover energy from the exhaust as well as provide immediate boost response, while the electric motor in the PDK can add up to 60 kW to the drivetrain. It is therefore not simply a flat-six with electric assistance bolted on, but an integrated system designed to make several technologies work together.

    The Six-Speed Manual Makes RUF’s Answer Even More Radical

    Perhaps the most striking part of the B8’s philosophy is what sits behind it. Despite producing more than 1,000 hp and 738 lb-ft, the engine drives through an in-house six-speed manual transmission, rather than an automated dual-clutch gearbox. That makes RUF’s approach almost defiantly traditional at a time when the fastest cars increasingly combine combustion engines with electric motors, sophisticated turbocharging and computer-controlled transmissions.

    The traditional flat six, however, has clearly reached the point where simply asking it to produce more power is no longer a straightforward solution. Beyond this level, Porsche’s path points towards electrical assistance, with hybridization adding power and reducing the burden on the combustion engine. RUF has illustrated the other option: if electrification is not desirable, the boxer itself can grow, with another pair of cylinders providing the additional capacity needed to move beyond the six-cylinder ceiling. At the four-figure power level, the choice is increasingly clear: add electrical assistance, or add cylinders.
