Porsche Design and Subaru might seem like an unlikely pairing, but automotive history is full of surprises — and this one is genuinely worth revisiting. Most people associate the Porsche Design subsidiary with its sleek chronographs, premium pens, and high-end kitchen appliances. Far fewer know that the studio once turned its attention to a Japanese family sedan, lending its signature touch to a special version of the Subaru Legacy that remains one of the most intriguing JDM curiosities ever built.

Porsche has long been synonymous with precision, luxury, and timeless style — things you don’t immediately equate with the Subaru brand, but that didn’t stop the two sides from joining forces on a special model called the B4 Blitzen, based on the Subaru Legacy. No, the model didn’t come with a bag of presents and jolly Saint Nick in the back seat, but it was capable of dashing through the snow in style thanks to exquisite new looks and nearly 300 horsepower on tap. The Blitzen remains a hidden gem in automotive history — a car that encapsulated the ambition of two brands to create something truly unique.

What Is the Subaru Legacy B4 Blitzen?

The Subaru Legacy B4 Blitzen was a special edition of the third-generation Subaru Legacy — available as either a sedan or wagon — sold exclusively in Japan from 2000 to 2003. Subaru named the car “Blitzen,” the German word for “lightning,” to signal that this was no ordinary Legacy. It was a premium sports sedan styled by one of the world’s most respected design houses: Porsche Design.

While Subaru handled the engineering — retaining its hallmark boxer engines and symmetrical all-wheel-drive system — Porsche Design elevated the car’s styling and interior appeal. The result was a vehicle that didn’t just look different, but felt like a genuine step up in quality and character from the standard Legacy. To understand how they pulled it off, it helps to know what Porsche Design is really about.

A Fusion of Two Iconic Brands

The collaboration between Subaru and Porsche Design was a bold move driven by Subaru’s desire to push the Legacy nameplate into new territory. Porsche Design, founded in 1972 by 911 designer Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, had already earned a reputation for creating exquisitely designed products that balanced performance and beauty. While it wasn’t directly affiliated with Porsche the automaker, Porsche Design’s DNA was deeply rooted in the same guiding principles.

For the B4 Blitzen, Porsche Design’s role was to massage and elevate the appearance of the standard sedan. The car featured a bespoke body kit with a sleek front bumper incorporating two wide openings, clean side skirts, a large rear bumper with additional vents, and a distinctive double-bubble wing — wagon variants received a unique rear liftgate garnish in place of the wing. Rounding out the exterior were 17-inch wheels reminiscent of the Alfa Romeo Teledial. Viewed as a whole, the Blitzen presented a Legacy that was more regal and less aggressive than the Legacy STi S401 of the same era.

Inside, Porsche Design’s influence was unmistakable. The cabin was adorned with premium leather, soft touchpoints, and special trim that elevated its feel considerably. A MOMO steering wheel and gear lever were fitted, along with a boost gauge mounted on the steering column. Various interior and exterior trim options were offered depending on the model year — different sound systems, leather colors, emblem choices, and roof trim — with the range expanding further after the 2003 facelift.

    What Makes the Blitzen Roar?

While Porsche Design handled the aesthetics, Subaru made sure the B4 Blitzen delivered where it counted. Under its stylish skin, the Blitzen carried all the hallmarks of a high-performance Subaru of the era, beginning with its famed boxer engine equipped with sequential twin turbocharging. The 16-valve, intercooled 2.0-liter flat-four used one turbocharger to build power and torque in the low-to-mid rpm range, while a second unit came online to deliver an additional surge of power through the mid-to-high range.

Rated at 276 horsepower and 253 lb-ft of torque, the Blitzen was noted for sharp acceleration and a satisfying power delivery that enabled a 0–60 mph sprint in just over five seconds when paired with the five-speed manual, thanks in part to the symmetrical AWD system and a Blitzen-specific limited-slip differential. A four-speed sequential automatic transmission was also available for those who preferred it.

The suspension received dedicated tuning, and a front strut tower brace was added for increased chassis rigidity. Manual-transmission cars also benefited from front 16-inch four-piston ventilated disc brakes for stronger stopping power. When the range was facelifted for 2003, additional upgrades followed — including a quicker steering ratio and improved brakes for automatic-transmission models.

How Much To Get A Blitzen In The USA?

In the Japanese market, well-maintained examples typically sell for $6,000 to $12,000 USD, with manual transmission models commanding a premium. Once factoring in shipping, customs duties, and import fees, bringing a landed, titled Blitzen to the United States generally totals between $10,000 and $16,000 USD. Getting one into the US requires adhering to federal regulations.

Under the 25-Year Rule, vehicles become legal to import without meeting EPA or FMVSS standards down to their exact month of manufacture. Buyers source a qualifying model directly through Japanese auction services or JDM export dealers. After purchasing, the car travels via Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) or container freight.

Upon arrival at a US port, a customs broker handles the entry filings—specifically DOT Form HS-7 and EPA Form 3520-1—along with paying the standard 2.5% auto import duty so the vehicle can be cleared, port-collected, and registered locally.

Will We Ever See A Blitzen Again?

Made for only three years — 2000 to 2003 — and sold exclusively in Japan, the Blitzen is a highly coveted Legacy variant that seems unlikely to return in any official capacity. It fits neatly into the tradition of wild JDM creations from that era, but it was uniquely ambitious for Subaru, and it has left enthusiasts wondering what a modern interpretation might look like.

Subaru was apparently intrigued by that question too. At the 2015 Tokyo Auto Salon, the brand unveiled a new Legacy B4 Blitzen concept finished in the same eye-catching Premium Red shade. This sixth-generation Legacy wore a very similar body kit, dominated by the large front bumper and double-bubble rear wing. The wheels weren’t quite as distinctive as the originals, but the 19-inch dark alloys gave the car a stronger road presence.

The interior was also reworked to feel more upscale, but unfortunately, the performance was left untouched — the concept still relied on a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter boxer producing around 170 horsepower. While it was an entertaining exercise, Subaru never put it into production, which is understandable given that it wouldn’t have lived up to the performance legacy of models like the Legacy 2.5GT.

The Legacy itself has since been discontinued, with Subaru retiring the nameplate after decades on sale. It’s hard to argue with the decision — the car had grown uninspiring in its later years, fading into the background despite offering competent performance. Perhaps its problem was that Subaru stopped experimenting with it.

Maybe the company should have called on Porsche Design once more to give the car the flash of lightning it needed to capture the public’s imagination. Picture a high-performance, electrified Subaru with Porsche-inspired design cues, or a model drawing on WRX rally DNA wrapped in a more refined package. Something could have been done — because it’s never easy watching another storied nameplate quietly disappear.
