Nissan has given the new Leaf the NISMO treatment, turning its practical electric daily driver into something with sharper reflexes, bolder styling, and a little more attitude. The catch, at least for now, is that the 2026 Nissan Leaf NISMO is only on sale in Japan. That is disappointing for U.S. buyers who may have hoped Nissan would bring some of its performance-brand energy to one of the most familiar EV nameplates in America.
The Leaf NISMO is offered in Japan with two front-wheel-drive versions. The B5 NISMO makes 174 horsepower, while the stronger B7 NISMO produces 214 horsepower, matching the output of the more powerful Leaf setup offered in the U.S. Nissan is not claiming extra horsepower for the NISMO model, but the electric motor has been specially tuned for more responsive acceleration and a livelier feel. Sport mode has also been renamed NISMO, while Standard and Eco modes receive their own calibration changes to make the car feel sharper in daily driving.
The more meaningful upgrades may be found in the chassis. Nissan fits the Leaf NISMO with exclusive dampers, stiffer suspension components, revised steering tuning, 19-inch Enkei wheels, and Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires. That combination should help the Leaf feel more planted and eager on winding roads, even if few owners are likely to treat it like a track car. Nissan also says the paddle shifters have been tuned for a more engaging feel, adding another small layer of driver involvement to the EV experience.
Visually, the Leaf NISMO gets the familiar red-accented treatment without going completely overboard. The body sits with a wider and lower appearance, aided by aerodynamic tweaks such as reshaped front bumper corners, a rear diffuser, and a larger ducktail spoiler. NISMO-specific trim appears on the bumpers, hood, and mirror caps, while a thin red line runs around the lower edge of the car. Buyers in Japan can also choose NISMO Stealth Gray, an exclusive color that gives the electric hatchback a more serious look.
Inside, the NISMO theme continues with red accents across the dashboard, NISMO branding on the power button and digital cluster, a faux leather-wrapped steering wheel with red stitching and a red center marker, and sportier seat detailing. Standard seats get NISMO logos and red perforations, while the top B7 NISMO RECARO model adds properly aggressive Recaro seats with red accents. Pricing in Japan starts at the equivalent of about $40,458 for the B5 NISMO, climbs to about $42,608 for the B7 NISMO, and reaches roughly $44,294 with the Recaro package.
As much as the Leaf NISMO would be an interesting addition to Nissan’s U.S. EV lineup, its chances of coming here appear slim. Nissan has not announced any U.S. plans for the model, and NISMO-branded EVs remain a tougher sell in a market still focused on range, charging convenience, and price. Still, the Leaf NISMO shows that Nissan is willing to give even its sensible electric models a little more personality. For now, American buyers will have to admire it from afar and hope Nissan eventually decides that a sportier Leaf belongs on this side of the Pacific too.
