Hyundai skipped the typical mid-cycle refresh and instead gave the Kona a complete overhaul. The first image of it leaked, revealing a taller, SUV-like design.

The second-generation Kona arrived in 2023 with a new “EV-led” design that looked closer to Hyundai’s dedicated IONIQ electric vehicles.

As it does with most of its models, Hyundai was expected to introduce a mid-cycle refresh for the Kona ahead of its third generation.

That won’t be the case this time. Hyundai is apparently skipping the refresh and going straight to the full model change.

Earlier this year, we got our first look at an early-stage prototype in South Korea. Although it was disguised, the vehicle clearly sat much higher with a boxy, angular design than the current Kona, which looks more like a crossover.

From what was shown, the new Kona design looked more like the Crater Concept, the off-road SUV Hyundai revealed at the LA Auto Show last year.

After the first image reportedly leaked online, it’s all but confirmed. The new Hyundai Kona is all grown up with a sleek, rugged SUV redesign.

The image posted by @EWVexillary reveals the new model change without any disguise for the first time. It almost looks like a combination of the Crater Concept and the IONIQ 5 with pixelated lighting and a clamshell hood.

According to TheKoreanCarBlog, the third-gen Kona will be equipped with Hyundai’s new Pleos infotainment system like the IONIQ 3.

The setup includes available 12.9″ or 14.6″ center infotainment screens, plus an optional driver display. Based on the Android Automotive OS, Hyundai’s Pleos is more like using a smartphone with apps and customizable screens, similar to Tesla models.

Hyundai has yet to announce what powertrains it will use. Like the current Kona, the third-gen model is expected to be offered in electric, hybrid, and gas-powered powertrains. The hybrid version will likely use the same 1.6L hybrid engine as the new Seltos.

While Hyundai skipped the 2026 Kona EV, the electric version could return in 2027 or 2028 when the third-generation model is expected to arrive.

How do you feel about the changes? Do you like the taller, SUV design? Let us know in the comments.
