A24 pissed off one of the internet’s largest horror communities when it announced it was working on an SCP Foundation film, but apparently hadn’t bothered to contact the SCP Wiki team, nor did it commit to releasing it under a Creative Commons license as required. Seeing an easy PR win, Neon is cashing in by announcing it’s making its own SCP movie. But unlike A24, it proactively reached out to the SCP Foundation Wiki team and has pledged to release it under the Creative Commons ShareAlike (CC BY-SA) license.
This is not an “official” SCP film. None of the wiki’s staff is involved in the writing or production, it is not receiving compensation, and the team’s official position is not to endorse such projects.
Other than the licensing details, there is almost no information about the upcoming film. Neon says it will be released theatrically in 2027, suggesting that this will be a quick turnaround, potentially low-budget affair. That’s not shocking considering the challenges of making a profit on a film made under a ShareAlike license.
In a statement, the SCP Foundation Wiki admin team said that, “The staff of the SCP Foundation Wiki and our community appreciate NEON’s excellent communication and commitment to following the requirements of our license as well as the spirit of collaboration at the core of the SCP Foundation project.“
