Volkswagen is marking a major milestone for one of its most important U.S.-market vehicles as production of the redesigned 2027 Atlas gets underway at the automaker’s Chattanooga, Tennessee, assembly plant. The second-generation Atlas began rolling down the line this summer, and Volkswagen recently gathered employees, company leaders and community representatives at the facility to celebrate the occasion. The new three-row SUV is scheduled to reach U.S. dealerships in October, beginning another chapter for a model that has become a major part of Volkswagen’s American identity.
The Atlas has deep roots in Chattanooga. Production of the original model began there in December 2016 after Volkswagen invested roughly $900 million to expand the facility for the North America-focused SUV. Since then, the Tennessee plant has produced more than one million Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles. That makes the nameplate much more than another entry in Volkswagen’s showroom, particularly considering how strongly American buyers have gravitated toward roomy three-row crossovers. The Atlas has consistently ranked among Volkswagen’s strongest-selling vehicles in the United States and helped establish Chattanooga as a critical piece of the automaker’s North American manufacturing strategy.
For 2027, Volkswagen has given the Atlas a substantial redesign rather than simply refreshing the existing formula. The exterior takes on a more modern appearance, while the cabin receives upgraded materials, larger displays and more technology. Under the hood is the latest evolution of Volkswagen’s turbocharged 2.0-liter EA888 four-cylinder engine, now producing 282 horsepower, the highest output offered in an Atlas to date. Despite the additional power, the revised engine also brings improved fuel economy, with front-wheel-drive versions rated as high as 29 mpg on the highway and all-wheel-drive models reaching 27 mpg.
Technology and comfort are equally important parts of the redesign. Depending on trim, the 2027 Atlas can be equipped with a 15-inch infotainment display, extensive ambient lighting, massaging front seats, ventilated second-row seating and an available Harman Kardon audio system. Volkswagen has also expanded its driver-assistance technology, including an updated Travel Assist system capable of helping with driver-initiated lane changes. Pricing begins at $43,135 for the front-wheel-drive Atlas SE, while the range climbs to $58,135 for the all-wheel-drive SEL Premium R-Line.
The start of 2027 Atlas production also carries added significance for Volkswagen’s roughly 4,000 employees in Chattanooga. The plant has evolved considerably during its 15-plus years of operation, and the Atlas remains central to its future as Volkswagen adjusts its U.S. manufacturing plans. With the redesigned three-row model arriving at dealers shortly and the next-generation Atlas Cross Sport following afterward, Chattanooga will remain home to some of Volkswagen’s most distinctly American products. For the Atlas itself, the second generation arrives with more power, more technology and a considerably more upscale presentation while sticking with the family-friendly formula that helped make the original such an important vehicle for Volkswagen in the United States.
