Luxury vehicles have always promised more than transportation—they’ve sold exclusivity, prestige, and the confidence that their badge alone justified a premium price. Electric vehicles are beginning to challenge that formula. As technology becomes the primary selling point, even iconic luxury brands are discovering that heritage isn’t enough to support six-figure price tags. One recent pricing decision didn’t simply make an expensive EV more affordable; it exposed how quickly perceived value can disappear when market demand fails to match ambitious pricing. For buyers, it’s a cautionary tale about depreciation that extends far beyond a single manufacturer.

Luxury EV Buyers Are Rewriting What Prestige Is Worth

When A $121,000 Badge Starts Losing To A $107,000 Porsche, Heritage Has A Problem

Legacy luxury names often command premium pricing simply because of their heritage, exclusivity, and reputation. Putting the Maserati name on a vehicle has often been the starting point for a vehicle to command a six-figure price tag, and EVs tend to be even more expensive than traditional gas-powered models. Heritage alone has become much less effective at sustaining luxury EV pricing than ever before.

Many automakers have worked tirelessly to improve EVs and address many of the pain points that drivers have with them. Some of these include driving range, charging capability, time, software, efficiency, and technology. These factors have begun to outweigh brand prestige for many buyers, although brands like Ferrari and Porsche continue to command premiums.

Maserati Didn’t Run A Sale—It Permanently Reset Its Pricing

    2027 Maserati GranTurismoMaserati

While you might find varying information from different publications and sources, the 2027 version of Maserati’s flagship EV sees a serious price drop from the 2026 version. This isn’t a sale, a discounted price, or a package of incentives; it’s a permanent pricing reset, bringing this EV down from $121,290 to $98,995. This change, although from an auto brand with low annual sales volume, could be a strong market signal that other automakers should follow.

The Grecale Folgore Exposed A Pricing Problem Dealers Already Knew About

Typically, pricing increases from one year to the next, especially when an automaker has improved the vehicle. Some price increases are shrugged off as inflation-driven, but Maserati went in a different direction with the Grecale Folgore. The new MSRP doesn’t apply to a vehicle that’s been stripped for parts, but to one that is objectively better than before.

The new 2027 Maserati Grecale Folgore has an increased driving range, going from 245 miles to 274 miles, which can be a big deal. It also has revised thermal management, an AWD disconnect feature, upgraded software, and improvements to the regenerative braking system. These upgrades come at a much-improved price, which doesn’t seem sustainable in the current market. Compared to the Porsche Macan Electric GTS ($105,300 MSRP) and Turbo ($112,700 MSRP) trims, the Grecale Folgore seems like a bargain at the flagship EV level.

Dealer Discounts Revealed The Market Months Before Maserati Did

Why did Maserati make such dramatic pricing changes to a vehicle that was being improved? Many dealers were already offering hefty discounts on 2025 Grecale Folgore models, with some approaching $40,000. These transaction prices revealed a serious market reality: they were simply too high and had to be brought down. It is fairly common for these realities to occur before manufacturers adjust MSRP figures, but the new factory pricing now acknowledges what dealers had already figured out: the EV was simply too expensive.

The Biggest Cost Was Paid By The First Owners

Depreciation—Not Reliability—Became The Real Ownership Risk

    2026 Maserati Grecale InteriorMaserati

Owners of previous model-year Grecale Folgore vehicles might not be as happy as new owners with this pricing change. The decrease in MSRP immediately puts pressure on resale values and makes it much more difficult for current owners to achieve higher resale pricing when they want to trade or sell their vehicles.

The Grecale Folgore is extremely new and doesn’t have any significant NHTSA safety recalls or defect investigations, which is good news for current owners. Unfortunately, the depreciation figures are alarming, showing that a 2025 Maserati Grecale will lose 79 percent of its original value after five years. This could be a signal to many owners to keep their EVs for the long haul, which they might not have planned on doing.

The GranTurismo Folgore Proves This Was Brand-Wide Capitulation

In all fairness, the Grecale Folgore’s price reduction isn’t the biggest drop in the Maserati lineup. The GranTurismo Folgore has been reduced by $57,695 for the 2027 model year. This brings the price down to $141,995, which is still more than many drivers want to pay.

The price reductions aren’t limited to a couple of Maserati models, of which there aren’t many, considering the global sales of 7,900 vehicles for 2025. The GranCabrio Folgore also saw a significant price reduction ahead of the 2027 model year. These changes demonstrate a strategic pricing reset across Maserati’s EV lineup rather than adjusting the cost of a single struggling SUV.

Maserati’s EV Pricing Crisis Started Long Before The 2027 Model

Maserati Was Already Struggling Before EVs — The Folgore Just Made It Impossible To Hide

    2026 Maserati Grecale Rear 3/4Maserati

The stress of selling EVs began well before the 2027 model year vehicles were created. With sales as low as 7,900 models globally, Maserati needs every sale possible to sustain its operations, and mounting tariff pressure, coupled with sluggish luxury EV demand, has been a huge challenge for the brand.

Although Maserati is a well-respected brand name in every market, it’s never been a consistent brand. The struggles of this brand predate the Folgore models, including declining sales, weak residual values, and inconsistent product momentum. It makes the brand hard to predict, which isn’t good in the automotive industry. The transition to EVs exposed the existing brand weaknesses; it didn’t create them—they were already present.

Porsche Shows Buyers Still Pay For Prestige—When The Product Justifies It

2026 Porsche Macan Electric Driving ShotPorsche

Prestige has a place in the market when it’s called for and properly supported. Porsche has not cut pricing on the Macan Electric, and there are no hints that it would do so. Porsche has maintained stronger pricing power and residual values across its lineup. Brand confidence appeals to buyers looking for premium vehicles with strong product leadership. This builds market confidence, and Porsche has nailed this for decades. The takeaway from this isn’t that vehicles from prestigious names are dead; rather, the name isn’t enough—it must be supported by product execution.

The Real Lesson Is How To Avoid The Luxury EV Depreciation Trap

Four Warning Signs Every Luxury EV Buyer Should Recognize

    2026 Maserati Grecale Front 3/4Maserati

Although you might never purchase a Maserati Grecale Folgore or another EV from the brand, the MSRP drop across several models sends warning signs, especially before buying your next vehicle. These warnings include:

    • Large dealer discounts (which often precede permanent MSRP reductions and cause immediate depreciation)
    • High inventory levels
    • Manufacturer sales trends
    • Real-world transaction prices relative to MSRP

If these signs are present, it might be wise to consider leasing a vehicle to avoid being stuck with a heavily depreciated vehicle. Another good option is to buy a lightly used vehicle, which allows the first owner to absorb the most depreciation.

Maserati Didn’t Kill Prestige Pricing—It Exposed Its New Limits

2027 Maserati Grecale FolgoreMaserati2027 Maserati Grecale FolgoreMaserati

Maserati’s dramatic pricing reset is about more than one luxury SUV—it illustrates how the luxury EV market is changing. Buyers are placing greater emphasis on real-world range, charging convenience, technology, ownership costs, and resale value than on a prestigious badge alone. That doesn’t mean premium brands have lost their appeal; companies like Porsche continue to command strong pricing because their products consistently reinforce their reputation.

The Grecale Folgore shows that heritage still matters, but in today’s EV market, it must be backed by competitive engineering, compelling value, and pricing that reflects what buyers are actually willing to pay. Maserati’s $23,000 MSRP cut wasn’t just a pricing adjustment; it was a public acknowledgment that the rules of luxury EV pricing had changed.

For early buyers, it became a painful lesson in how quickly depreciation can erase the value of a prestigious badge. For everyone else, it’s a reminder that the smartest luxury purchase isn’t always the newest or the most expensive, but the one whose price reflects market reality. In exposing the limits of prestige pricing in the EV era, Maserati may have unintentionally revealed one of the biggest depreciation traps luxury buyers have ever faced.
