Good morning and welcome to The Downshift, a daily sweep of today’s top headlines from the auto industry and car culture, curated by The Drive’s editorial team. Each story gets a short summary and a link to the original source if you want to dive deeper.

    Here’s what’s cooking on Monday, October 19, 2026:

📹 If you stopped using MapQuest in 2009, you might want to reconsider, as the company has introduced a new feature to its software that reveals the locations of automated license-plate reader cameras, including, but not limited to, equipment from Flock and Leonardo. [Engadget]

🪫 Volkswagen is managing a fire risk for the battery packs in its ID.4 electric SUVs with a software update that imposes a cap at 80% state-of-charge. This has been a common “remedy”—if you’d go so far as to call it that—for batteries malfunctioning or though to be unsafe by automakers attempting to avoid the expense of full pack replacement, but of course it does sacrifice range and usability in turn, especially as we’re entering colder months. [InsideEVs]

⚡ Subaru showed off a prototype electric vehicle in Japan that was completely built in house—a significant departure from its current EV repertoire, which consists of rebadged Toyota models. The mule looks to have been made using the body of a prior-gen Outback wagon, and incorporates front and rear motors that combine for a healthy 509 horsepower. Subaru expects some of the project’s technologies to enter the market around 2029. [Automotive News]

💺 Ford is recalling a relatively small number of F-150 pickups—shy of 3,000 units, model years 2025 through 2027—for improperly secured front seats. Though limited in scope, this is Ford’s 80th recall in 2026 so far. [Autoblog]

🗺️ Rivian has opened its Autonomy Early Access Program, allowing customers to test out its semi-autonomous driving features that are designed to handle turns and merges along a point-to-point route. It’s invite only for now, but wider public release is expected sometime next year. [Motor1]

🍁 An executive at Toyota’s Canadian arm recently said in an interview that the company is “fully committed to making cars in Canada for the long-term” as it ramps up to begin producing the Lexus NX at its Cambridge, Ontario plant. That crossover will join the RX and Toyota RAV4, also built at the same facility. [Bloomberg]

🗾 Corvette fans in Japan are getting a super-rare special edition of the C8 that’s mostly a cosmetic package, called the V8 Tourer. Limited to just 15 units, the Tourer gets a Red Mist Metallic body with silver stripes, and some unique trim. If it makes you feel better, at least the V8 on offer is a carry-over from last year, rather than the new 6.7-liter mill employed in the Grand Sport models. [CarBuzz]

    🏁 Weekend race winners:

    • NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at Phoenix: Kaden Honeycutt for Tricon Garage
    • NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series at Phoenix: Jesse Love for Richard Childress Racing
    • FIA WEC 6 Hours of Barcelona: Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley, and Ryo Hirakawa for Toyota Racing
    • NASCAR Cup Series at Phoenix: Tyler Reddick for 23XI Racing
    • NHRA Texas Fall Nationals Finals: Antron Brown (Top Fuel), J.R. Todd (Funny Car), and Dallas Glenn (Pro Stock)
