Nissan is celebrating a major milestone for one of its most recognizable SUVs as the Pathfinder turns 40 years old. To mark the occasion, the automaker is introducing the 2027 Nissan Pathfinder Special Edition, a three-row family SUV that pays tribute to its rugged beginnings with some unmistakable styling cues from the 1980s. The Pathfinder has come a long way since arriving in 1986 as a compact, two-door SUV for the 1987 model year. Four decades and more than 2 million sales later, Nissan is giving its popular midsize SUV a little nostalgia while keeping the modern comforts that today’s buyers have come to expect.

What makes this anniversary model particularly interesting is Nissan’s decision to revisit one of the original Pathfinder’s most memorable interior color combinations. The 2027 Pathfinder Special Edition features a striking two-tone black-and-burgundy cabin inspired by the first-generation model’s distinctive red upholstery. The rich burgundy accents extend across the seats, door panels, and dashboard, creating an appearance that’s refreshingly different from the predictable black, gray, and beige interiors found in so many modern SUVs. Nissan also adds an embossed anniversary graphic on the passenger-side dashboard that commemorates the Pathfinder’s original introduction. It’s a relatively simple touch, but one that longtime Nissan enthusiasts will likely appreciate.

Outside, Nissan takes a more restrained approach to the anniversary treatment. The familiar Pathfinder design remains largely unchanged, but several carefully placed details distinguish the Special Edition from the rest of the lineup. Burgundy accents appear in the upper grille openings, while unique anniversary badging on the C-pillars reinforces the SUV’s connection to its heritage. Even the Pathfinder lettering across the rear receives a touch of burgundy. Black 20-inch alloy wheels complete the look, adding a sportier appearance without going overboard. Considering how dramatically the Pathfinder has evolved over the decades, it’s nice to see Nissan acknowledge its roots without trying to force a complete retro redesign.

Beyond its distinctive appearance, the Pathfinder Special Edition comes equipped with a healthy selection of premium features. A panoramic sunroof brightens the cabin, while a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system should make family road trips a little more enjoyable. Second-row captain’s chairs provide easier access to the third row and a more comfortable seating arrangement for passengers, while rear door sunshades add another welcome touch of convenience. These features help position the Special Edition as a more upscale offering, giving buyers a compelling alternative to the higher-priced Platinum trim without sacrificing much in the way of everyday luxury.

Under the hood, Nissan sticks with its familiar naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 engine, producing 284 horsepower and paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Buyers can choose between front-wheel drive and an available all-wheel-drive configuration. While the powertrain doesn’t introduce anything groundbreaking, there’s something reassuring about Nissan continuing to offer a traditional V6 in a segment increasingly populated by turbocharged four-cylinder engines and hybrid powertrains. Another worthwhile addition is the standard upgraded towing package, which increases the Pathfinder Special Edition’s maximum towing capacity to 6,000 pounds, compared with 3,500 pounds for models without the package. That’s a meaningful advantage for families who occasionally need to pull a boat, camper, or utility trailer.

Pricing for the 2027 Nissan Pathfinder Special Edition starts at $48,965 for the front-wheel-drive version, while the all-wheel-drive model carries a starting price of $50,965. Those figures include the destination charge and place the anniversary model toward the upper end of the Pathfinder lineup, just below the range-topping Platinum. The 2027 Pathfinder is expected to reach dealerships in November 2026, giving shoppers another option in the highly competitive midsize three-row SUV segment. While the Special Edition isn’t exactly inexpensive, its combination of unique styling, upgraded amenities, and additional towing capability could make the price easier to justify for buyers already considering a well-equipped Pathfinder.

Ultimately, the 2027 Nissan Pathfinder Special Edition is a fitting way to celebrate four decades of a nameplate that has evolved considerably over the years. The original Pathfinder was a relatively simple, truck-based SUV aimed at adventurous drivers, while today’s version has become a comfortable and capable family hauler with room for three rows of passengers. Some enthusiasts may still miss the smaller, more rugged character of those early models, but the anniversary edition offers a welcome reminder of where it all started. We especially appreciate the bold burgundy interior, which adds some personality to a vehicle class that can sometimes feel a little too conservative. Nissan hasn’t reinvented the Pathfinder for its 40th birthday, but it has given buyers a stylish reason to celebrate the occasion.
