Land Rover is ending production of the Discovery Sport, bringing an 11-year run to a close for one of the brand’s smallest and most accessible SUVs. The company confirmed that production will end in December 2026, making the 2026 model year the final one for the compact luxury SUV. Land Rover says the move is part of the normal product lifecycle as its Halewood plant transitions to next-generation models, but the timing also reflects a lineup that is changing quickly around electrification, regulations, and stronger demand for Defender-branded vehicles.
The Discovery Sport first arrived in the U.S. for the 2015 model year as the replacement for the LR2, which was known globally as the Freelander. It offered compact luxury SUV packaging with available third-row seating, all-weather confidence, and just enough Land Rover identity to appeal to buyers who wanted the badge without stepping up to a Range Rover or full-size Discovery. A major refresh arrived for 2020 with updated styling, a revised interior, a new four-cylinder engine, and hybrid technology in some markets, but the model has received relatively little attention since then.
Autocar reports that Europe’s General Safety Regulation 2 rules may have also played a role in the decision, since the Discovery Sport would have needed updates to meet newer safety requirements. Rather than invest heavily in an aging model with slowing sales, Land Rover appears ready to let it go. That mirrors what other automakers have done recently when older internal-combustion models became too expensive to update for evolving regulations, especially in Europe.
The Discovery Sport’s place in the lineup is expected to be effectively filled by the upcoming Defender Sport, a smaller and boxier off-roader that should carry more of the rugged image buyers now associate with Land Rover. That shift makes sense. The Defender has become one of the company’s strongest identities, while the Discovery name has struggled to maintain the same momentum. If the Defender Sport can deliver compact sizing, modern technology, and genuine off-road credibility, it could succeed where the Discovery Sport faded and become a more compelling entry point into the Land Rover family.
