Even though the Miata was never the cheapest enthusiast car, it has always delivered a good bang for the buck. A no-frills four-banger with a stick, and not much else between you and the pavement. The question buyers actually wrestle with isn’t whether a Miata is fun enough; it’s which version of that fun they’re willing to pay for, especially once you start adding things like a retractable hardtop and Brembo and BBS hardware to that equation.
I just spent a week in the priciest, most heavily optioned Miata that Mazda sells: a 2026 MX-5 RF Club, and came away convinced the car is worth it. But “worth it” is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and it changes depending on which Miata you’re comparing it to. Here’s how the math actually breaks down.
Let’s talk soft tops first. Mazda’s site lists the soft-top MX-5 Sport (base) at $32,045 (including a $1,315 destination fee), while the enthusiast-focused MX-5 Club jumps to $36,140. That’s nearly a $4,000 premium for Bilstein dampers, 17-inch Mazda alloys, a Bose system, and, most importantly, an LSD. The Grand Touring model adds adaptive front headlights, heated leather seats, and automatic climate control for $37,940.
Then there’s the retractable hardtops. The RF Club starts at $44,110; an $8,000 jump from the non-RF Club. It sounds like a lot to ask for a retractable roof, but pressing a button and watching your car transform like Iron Man’s mask does has a way of justifying the cost. It looks better with the hardtop on, too, so there’s that.

But wait, there’s more. Yes, $8,000 is a big jump for any car, cool roof or not, but the number isn’t only a reflection of the roof alone. The RF comes standard with the Brembo/BBS package, which runs a separate $5,050 add-on on non-RF cars. Not convinced the BBS wheels and Brembos are worth $5,050? Thankfully, the package offers more than its name. Here’s everything included, per Mazda’s site:
- Brembo front brakes with red calipers, Mazda rear brakes with red calipers
- BBS forged 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels in Dark Gunmetal finish
- Aero kit: side sill extensions, rear bumper skirt in Brilliant Black
- Heated Black Recaro sport seats
- Alcantara interior trim
- Black interior accents
It’s those last few bullet points that brought my MX-5 tester interior up to Porsche levels of refinement.
The only downside to the RF route is you’re carrying 100 extra pounds for the hardtop privilege. If your priority is lap times or outright value, the non-RF Club still gives you nearly the full driving experience for meaningfully less money and less weight. But if you want that coupe-to-convertible transformation—or you were already planning to add the Brembo/BBS package anyway—then the RF is worth a look.
Zoom out to all the different MX-5 trims, options, and packages, and you’ll realize this car has always let you buy exactly as much sports car as you want. A base soft-top MX-5 is still one of the last genuinely simple sports cars sold new. It’s cheap enough to actually track and offers a solid base to build on. Everything above that starting price, RF included, is a menu of “nice-to-haves.”
So is the Miata worth it? At $32k to start, it’s hard to argue otherwise. Whether the RF’s extra $8,000—plus whatever the Brembo/BBS package would’ve cost you separately—is worth it comes down to one honest question: do you want the roof, or do you just want the car? Answer that, and the rest of the spreadsheet takes care of itself.
