Whether you’re getting on a plane, train, bus, or just driving yourself, decades of technological advancement and strong government regulations have made getting from place to place easier, but it’s not as cool as it used to be. In the 1950s, you could explore Route 66 in a tail-finned land yacht, eat real food in first class on an airplane, or ride a bus that didn’t make you feel sad about your life choices.
Today’s buses are anonymous boxes designed to offer cheap long-distance transportation and nothing else. The General Motors PD-4501 Scenicruiser was a style statement. About 1,000 were built for Greyhound between 1954 and 1956, and this 1954 example was the first production model. Its next stop is Mecum’s 2026 Las Vegas auction, where it’s scheduled to cross the block on November 14.

The Scenicruiser is as much an icon of the 1950s as the chrome and tail fins that bedecked the cars it shared the roads with. That’s largely thanks to the split-level design, which resembles the domed railroad passenger cars that were also prevalent at the time. This provided elevated seating for passengers and a large baggage area below, while keeping the overall height lower than a true double-decker and thus avoiding clearance issues. Aluminum exterior paneling satisfied the 1950s need for shininess.
However, according to the enthusiast website Bluehounds and Redhounds, the buses experienced significant problems. The newness of the design meant a lot of components weren’t fully sorted, and because a suitable V8 diesel engine wasn’t available at the start of production, a pair of four-cylinder engines were used instead, making maintenance more complicated. The latter problem was solved with the introduction of the Detroit Diesel 8V-71, which is what this bus is now equipped with. That engine is connected to a four-speed manual transmission.

Despite those problems, Greyhound continued to operate Scenicruisers into the 1970s, and rival bus manufacturers introduced their own copies. GM didn’t build a direct successor to the Scenicruiser, but the influence of its styling can be seen on the later “Buffalo Bus” line, which was a general offering that wasn’t exclusive to Greyhound. About 200 Scenicruisers are thought to survive today, a reminder of what was.
Mecum didn’t publish a pre-auction estimate, but someone on Craigslist was asking $50,000 for an unrestored example in 2024. Fully restored and the first of its kind, I wouldn’t be surprised if this Scenicruiser sold for a lot more, assuming the people bidding have parking spaces as big as their wallets.
