Chinese battery brand Sunwoda has just revealed a new EV battery charging system that can add 100 km (~62 miles) of range to an EV every minute, and can take a battery from from 10-97% SOC in less than 10 minutes. At room temperature.
As armed conflicts continue to send global fuel prices skyward, EVs are getting to the point where they’re capable “filling up” on electric fuel in about the same (or less) than it takes to top up on gas or diesel – if you can even find any!
Data Sunwoda presented its new 15C LFP battery tech at a battery industry conference in Zaozhuang, Shandong and last week, along with claims that it could charge from 10% to 70% in 5 minutes and from 10% to 97% in 9 minutes adding about 60 miles of range for each minute it’s plugged in. The real breakthrough, though, wasn’t just about speed – it was about thermal management. And those incredible charging speeds were achieved at room temperature.
That’s because the biggest issue in charging has always been keeping heat under control, and pushing an hurricane worth of literal greased lightning into a battery in a matter of minutes generates a ton of heat. Managing that level of energy this effectively is an impressive achievement – and, crucially, Sunwoda’s impressive engineering seems to go both ways, managing to take just 15 minutes to add 700 km (~435 miles) worth of range and take the battery from 10 to 97% SOC at a positively chilly -20° C.
Sunwoda supplies batteries to brands like Geely, Dongfeng, and GAC, and says its batteries can meet warranty requirements of 10 years or 300,000 km with no limit on ultrafast charging session. The statement directly challenges the outdated notion that high-speed charging rates necessarily shorten EV battery life.
Sunwoda also showed off the high-power charging infrastructure side of its flash charging equation, unveiling an open ecosystem that combines solar power, battery energy storage, and ultra-fast charging that helps take the company from, “a battery that charges real fast,” into a broader place of energy management and opening them up to partnering with energy companies and microgrids directly.
