‘I’m Not Sure It Will Be A Real Sedan’

Although SUVs are the big money spinners for manufacturers at the moment, there’s still space for the luxury sedan in the market, especially when it wears a trident on the grille. The segment has shrunk significantly, and with the discontinuation of both the Ghibli and Quattroporte, there’s a three-box-sized hole left in Maserati’s lineup. But that’s changing soon, as the Italian brand has pledged to return to the sedan game. Our first glimpse of a brand-new sedan from the Italian manufacturer might be closer than you think — and it’ll be Maserati down to the core, even if it won’t be a traditional sedan as we know it.

New Maserati Sedan Could Be On The Horizon

In a conversation with CarBuzz at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Maserati’s Head of Engineering, Davide Danesin, hinted at re-entering the sedan market within the next few years. “We do think that we should go back to making lower, more sedan-like vehicles,” he says.

“I’m not sure if it’s going to be a real sedan, but we are also going to present some cars in the future with new ideas and new concepts. It’s part of the disclosure we’re going to do before the end of the year.”

    – Davide Danesin, Head of Maserati Engineering

The last sedans to be sold as Maserati models were the Ghibli and Quattroporte, the latter of which debuted in the 1960s. Both of these vehicles utilized Maserati (and Fiat-Chrysler) platforms in their final generations. Now, however, Maserati is unsure what will underpin its latest four-door motor.

Chassis Architecture Will Depend On Market Segment

“The architecture depends very much on the positioning,” Danesin explains. “The Gran Turismo architecture is also capable of delivering such a kind of car in a very efficient way, so this is a possibility we still have in our portfolio.” Using proven architecture from the Gran Turismo in a new way builds brand independence from parent company Stellantis yet also lowers overall cost of development. The automaker may also find it easier to market a full-size luxury vehicle if they use a unique chassis to Stellantis products.

A Plethora Of Platforms And Engines

Being part of Stellantis not only gives Maserati more stability, but also opens its engineers up to use a shared platform from the portfolio. The most obvious choice for a new sedan would be the Alfa Romeo Giulia platform (named the FCA Giorgio platform), which has already proved itself over a decade on sale. Gran Turismo and Grecale models already use a heavily modified version of this chassis that fits with their sport-focused dynamics. But Giorgio is now technically old, and has been replaced by the STLA Large platform. Could Maserati use this instead?

“I think synergies with Stellantis are also possible, like we did in the past,” Danesin says. “It depends very much on the decision the Maserati brand and product will take for such a kind of vehicle, and then which position it will sit in.” Building a mainstream product, like the Ghibli or Quattroporte, could easily be done with a base Stellantis product, while a high-end luxury barge could be built on a stretched Gran Turismo architecture.

An Engine Choice Likely Already Decided

In terms of engines, we can reasonably guess that the company will use its Nettuno V6 as a starting point, with possible hybrid power added. Danesin explained that while Maserati is open to adding electric motors, he understands that customers “expect a level of purity” in their cars, and that “hybridization is not, by definition, an advantage.” Could there be space for a V8? He says: ‘there may be space in future cars,’ depending on the market.

CarBuzz Insight — Why This Matters

    2020 Maserati Quattroporte GrilleMaserati

It’s no secret Maserati has been struggling for a while — its sales dropped 58% from 2023 to 2025. The company blames this on tariffs, lower interest in the Grecale, and a difficult market in China where domestic brands reign supreme. It also has no large SUV in its lineup following the discontinuation of the Levante, a shape that has become the default for luxury buyers in 2026. The brand has pledged to bring back the Levante soon, but until it does, its appeal is limited.

“We consider Maserati the only luxury brand [within Stellantis]. For the future, we need to invent something dedicated to Maserati without forgetting the possible collaboration between Alfa Romeo and Maserati. One is premium, one is luxury.”

    – Santo Ficili, Maserati CEO

Bringing a new car to the market means a potential new sales opportunity when no one else is building sedans anymore. The Ghibli was the company’s bestseller until its discontinuation. With more and more competition from Chinese brands in Europe, Maserati’s next few years are crucial, so the positioning of its volume sellers, SUVs and sedans, are crucial to bringing extra sales. We’re expecting a new Maserati concept at the Paris Motor Show in October, which may preview the new Quattroporte.
