Tattoos are still taboo in South Korea, where even getting one from an artist instead of a medical professional wasn’t legalized until a bill passed just last year. That’s not stopping Hyundai’s Palisade from getting inked up for model year 2027, though, with a new Palisade Hybrid Calligraphy Black Ink Edition taking a whole bottle of pigment just to write its name.

Now Hyundai will be hoping it brings in buyers to make their own mark on the bottom of the order sheet. Here’s what they’ll get if they give in to the dark side.
Hyundai Goes Back In Black With Newest Palisade

Black Ink means blacked out. It’s hard to describe the look as “murdered out” anymore, now that even the Toyota Prius offers a similar package, but that’s the general idea. Almost all the trim on the outside is black, including the Hyundai H logo, front grille accents, and lower skid plates all in a satin finish. The window trim, pillar trim, lower door covers, and the wheels are all much brighter, but still black. But it’s a glossy black finish.
There’s even more black in the cabin. Everything that was silver on the Calligraphy is now black, including the steering wheel trim, door handles, window switches, speakers, and vents. Hyundai describes it as “a dramatic, premium demeanor,” while we would call it “better when the sun is out.” Getting rid of the cabin’s shiny bits should be good for glare.
Calligraphy Black Ink will be hybrid only. The Palisade Hybrid’s 2.5-liter turbo-four and multiple electric motors deliver a total of 329 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque. If you don’t use all of those horses too frequently, you can also expect 31 mpg city and 32 highway from the big three-row SUV.
$1,500 To Get Rid Of The Shiny Bits

“For our customers, luxury is not about excess. It is about driving something that feels worth the payment every month and every time you walk up to it. Black Ink is that idea at its sharpest.”
-Olabisi Boyle, senior vice president, product planning and mobility strategy, Hyundai Motor North America
Adding all of that black trim to the Palisade Calligraphy bumps the price by $1,440 over a Calligraphy without it. The MSRP is $59,280 for a front-drive model (including a $1,600 destination fee) while adding AWD adds $2,000 to the price. Sales of the new model will start this month, and it’s available in more than just the darkest Abyss Black Pearl paint. You can also choose Ecotronic Gray Pearl or Creamy White Pearl paint options with the black interior. For comparison, a standard Palisade Calligraphy offers 10 paint choices along with three interior leather picks.

The new large three-row SUV gets a little bigger, adds hybrid and off-road trim options, and is priced to compete.
This isn’t Hyundai’s first Black Ink model. Earlier this year, the Korean automaker announced a similar package for the Ioniq 9. The Ioniq 9 is Hyundai’s three-row electric vehicle equivalent of the Palisade, for buyers wanting a greener vehicle dressed in black.

Is blacked-out trim getting old and tired? We thought so, but nearly every automaker is offering some variation on the theme, so it’s hard to blame Hyundai for trying. It’s great that automakers will give you choices beyond chrome or brushed metal, but is offering it on one version at the highest end of the range really a choice? We’re less sure on that one.
