A mysterious IONIQ 5 test mule was caught in South Korea with an all-new interior setup, including a large 18″ infotainment screen.

When is Hyundai launching its first SDV?

Hyundai Motor Group is betting heavily on software and AI to drive growth over the next few years as it aims to become a “software-centric mobility leader.”

Its new Pleos Connect infotainment system and OS are at the heart of it all. Based on the Android Automotive OS, Hyundai’s Pleos’s new system is similar to what’s found in Tesla models, with apps and customizable screens like a smartphone.

The Grandeur was the first to launch in Korea with the new infotainment system earlier this year, while the IONIQ 3 is Hyundai’s first European model to offer the high-tech new setup.

By the end of the decade, the company plans to equip around 20 million Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles with Pleos.

The system is the “first tangible step” toward an SDV (Software Defined Vehicle) architecture, which will enable new in-car features, autonomous driving, and a personalized driving experience.

Hyundai plans to launch its first SDV in 2027, and it appears the IONIQ 5 could be among the first to receive the upgrade.

An IONIQ 5 prototype was spotted in South Korea with a completely new high-tech setup. The images from JHS_car.x (via TheKoreanCarBlog) reveal a minimalist design with one large 17″ or 18″ central infotainment screen.

It also doesn’t appear to have many physical buttons aside from the two toggles on the steering wheel.

Will Hyundai launch the IONIQ 5 as its first SDV? It has yet to be confirmed. The prototype could also be a mid-cycle refresh or update. However, as Hyundai’s most popular electric vehicle, it may make sense.

Last month, an IONIQ 6 prototype was spotted near Hyundai’s R&D hub in Europe with a similar high-tech setup.

With Hyundai planning to launch its first SDV in late 2027, we should learn more soon. Check back for updates.
