As Jaguar pivots to an EV-only future, it’s a great time to be checking out some of their spiciest combustion-era sports cars in the used market. Having to decide between four, six, or eight cylinders is a nice choice to have here, though each of them has far-reaching implications for your wallet. In fact, buying a used F-Type in 2026 also requires selecting between two transmission choices and two drivetrain layouts as well.

As signs point to a price floor being achieved and highly desirable P380 AWD coupes commanding a premium worth paying, let’s put some numbers to the choices to help you budget accordingly for your F-Type experience and make the most informed purchase decision possible.

Your F-Type Choices Look Like This In 2026

If you’re shopping in the used F-Type universe, you’ve got some pretty attractive choices, with three core engines available across its run from 2013 to 2024. Note that some figures and model years may vary slightly by market.

For shoppers after maximum fuel efficiency, the later-introduction 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine brought entry pricing and fuel costs down. It made 296 horsepower and was available from the 2018 to 2023 model years. If you’re shopping for a used F-Type, the oldest model you’d find with this four-cylinder engine is from the 2018 model year.

The 3.0‑liter supercharged V6 engine was available across virtually the entire F-Type lifespan. This engine made 335 hp in its standard form (2013–2023), 375 hp in the S (2014-2020) and P380 (2018-2023) variations, and 395 hp in the 2017 400 Sport and 2021-2023 P400 versions.

The 5.0-liter supercharged V8 was available across the F-Type’s entire 2013-2023 lifespan as well, and made 495 horsepower at launch in the F-Type V8 S, and 550 hp in the F-Type R flagship, which launched the following year in 2015. By the end of the F-Type’s life cycle, the supercharged V8 was up to 575 hp in its most extreme volume applications.

So, the supercharged V6 engine sits somewhere in the middle of your choices with the better part of 400 hp and 0-60 in sub-five-second territory. You could even get yours with a six-speed manual from 2016 to 2019, in either coupe or convertible body styles, but only with rear-wheel drive.

Here’s What You’ll Pay Today, By Cylinder Count

Today, some of the cheapest, newest F-Types on the second-hand market are four-cylinder-powered units with 45,000 to 80,000 miles, priced between $25,000 and $30,000. That’s Honda Civic money for a luxurious 300-hp sports coupe. Note that the oldest F-Type you’ll find with four-cylinder power is a 2018 model year unit. If the four-cylinder engine is right for you, most of the priciest units top out under $45,000 and often have less than 20,000 miles of former use, with some clocking in at under 10,000 miles.

With supercharged V6 power, the cheapest units on sale today tend to be pre-facelift units hovering around $20,000 with 75,000 to 95,000 miles on the clock. If you’re after a low-mileage copy with V6 power, a budget of $40,000 to $50,000 should get you a unit with 15,000 to 40,000 miles of former use. If you’re specifically after a post-facelift P380 or other top-performing V6 models with the 375-hp configuration, plan to slightly bump that $50,000 ceiling to access the most desirable models today.

For V8 power of the same vintage with a similar odometer reading, you’d be encountering asking costs well into the mid-$60,000 territory, making the V8 engine roughly an extra $15,000 versus the V6 if you’re considering post-facelifted models. You might also save $15,000 by opting for a V8 model from the pre-facelift era, but that would put you in an older example with a more dated design and interior. Expect an asking price of about $35,000 for an earlier, pre-facelift V8 unit with 40,000 to 60,000 miles, though some older units approaching 100,000 miles can be had in the mid-$20,000 range.

Online data show the highest transaction volume since 2019 in the $25,000 to $60,000 price range, with prices slowly declining in recent years.

To summarize, those after bargain pricing should set a budget of $20,000 to $30,000 for a high-mileage V6, or a high-mileage, pre-facelift V8. Early four-cylinder models from 2018 or newer are available at this price point with 45,000 to 80,000 miles.

The enthusiast sweet spot looks to be the $30,000 to $45,000 range, with pre-facelift V8s at moderate mileage, low-mileage V6s, and top-tier, mint-condition four-cylinders. The premium tier, from $45,000 to $65,000 and beyond, opens the door to post-facelift models with low miles, top-performing V6 models in near-showroom condition, and early holy-grail models like the SVR with slightly higher mileage.

Jaguar fanatics with a $100,000 budget can access just about any F-Type they like, including late-model post-facelift V8 Rs with low miles, well-optioned final-year editions, and clean, low-mileage SVRs.

    Model Years Worth Noting

    2017 Jaguar F-Type S ConvertibleJaguar

As you scour the F-Type listings for the lustrous British coupe that most tickles your fancy, keep a few model years in mind.

    • The Launch (2014–2015): The F-Type officially arrived in North America for the 2014 model year as a convertible. The Coupe arrived for the 2015 model year.
    • The Manual Window (2016-2019): For enthusiasts seeking a three-pedal setup, a 6-speed manual transmission was introduced for 2016, but only on rear-drive models with the supercharged V6, before being discontinued after 2019.
    • The Early Facelift (2018): A minor mid-cycle refresh upgraded the original design with new headlights, lighter seats, a faster infotainment system, and the debut of the entry-level 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 296 horsepower.
    • The Major Facelift (2021): This is the dramatic F-Type overhaul most shoppers are interested in. For 2021, the F-Type got a completely new face, new taillamps, a major infotainment system upgrade, and a digital instrument cluster to better compete with more modern competitors.

Feeding And Fixing Your Fiesty New Feline

According to EPA data, a four-cylinder model will use $2,950 worth of premium unleaded annually. Models with the V6 engine use about $3,500 per year worth of gas, and V8 owners can expect a yearly gas bill of at least $4,300. If you keep your F-Type for 5 years, the V6 could cost you an extra $2,750 in fuel over the four-cylinder, and the V8 could cost you an extra $4,000 in fuel over the V6. Going from four cylinders to eight adds nearly $7,000 to your five-year gas budget.

RepairPal data pegs annual repair costs at $1,441 on average, but doesn’t call out specific costs by individual model. Data from CarEdge puts five-year maintenance costs at $4,591. Budgeting an extra $1,500 per year for repairs and maintenance, therefore, seems reasonable. Don’t forget depreciation, which could cost you another $22,000 or more over our theoretical 5-year ownership period, according to CarEdge depreciation estimates.

This Isn’t Necessarily A Specification Question

    2020 Jaguar F-Type R frontMecum

The F-Type’s three engine choices are like the proverbial three bowls of porridge sampled by Goldilocks before being frightened off by a family of bears. The four-cylinder engine is the right choice for some shoppers, who can save thousands on fuel, though it’s considered a far cry from the high-performing engines that paved the F-Type’s path to fame.

The V8 engine has the gnarliest of the F-Type soundtracks and will get you to 60 mph anywhere from 0.5 to 1.5 seconds sooner than the V6. However, it’s considerably heavier on fuel and costs an extra $15,000 or more, unless you’re willing to accept a much higher odometer reading or the dated pre-facelift body and interior. Decisions, decisions.

Due to depreciation, modern Jaguars represent a tempting used option. There are several elements to consider before taking the plunge, though.

This leaves the V6, and in particular, the post-update models, as the sweet spot somewhere in the middle. It’s also the only configuration where you’ll find a three-pedal option if you’re patient enough, and like the V8, the V6 can be equipped with AWD, but only on units with the 8-speed automatic.

Numerous owners offer the same advice to first-time F-Type-curious shoppers in popular forum discussions: drive all three and decide which you like best. Many F-Type owners find the four-cylinder plenty of fun. Many F-Type owners were considering a V6 but opted for the V8 for its hilariously obnoxious sound and thrust. Most owners who chose the V8 don’t wish they had the V6 instead, though the opposite isn’t always true. Most enthusiasts will find the F-Type V6 to be a tremendously responsive driving machine with authentic thrills, though the V8 leaves the most maniacal among us a place to go.

Final Thoughts From Behind The Wheel

    2024 Jaguar F-Type R rearJaguar

A few final thoughts. Among cars in general, a modern two-seater with a supercharged V6 and 3 pedals is an extreme rarity these days, and not a form factor likely to be repeated. You’ll have plenty of supercharged V8 sports cars to choose from in the second-hand market for years to come, including some with a manual transmission. Conversely, if you’ve always thought a supercharged six-speed six-cylinder would be pretty sweet, this is probably your time to act. Also, the V6 can be driven with much more throttle, much more of the time, without rocketing drivers into demerit point territory in an instant. It’s always nice to have choices.

When deciding between transmissions, note that you’ll likely find the manual option eliminates some of the best sound effects of the F-Type experience, particularly those associated with the lightning-fast shifts of the 8-speed automatic. After thousands of miles spent in F-Types over the years, your writer would probably choose the automatic: it’s smoother and quicker, makes the F-Type’s soundtrack even more intense, and can be had with AWD.

    2014 Jaguar F-Type R steering wheelBring a Trailer

I’ll leave you with some commentary from an owner community post that sums the choices up nicely. As one user put it, “the V6 is perfect, and the V8 is excessive, laugh-out-loud fun.” Other F-Type veterans point out that this isn’t a power decision as much as a character decision: for some, the excess power and rumble to the V8’s soundtrack are more than worth the extra price of admission. For the rest of us, the V6 will likely return 95 percent of the grins for a considerable cost advantage. Whichever model you choose, you’re giving in to the right kind of temptation.
