- The Wey V8X five-seat SUV goes from 0 to 100 km/h in as little as 4.5 seconds and offers up to 402 km of CLTC all-electric range.
- The Wey V8X is the second production model on GWM’s Global One S platform and can be seen as a smaller version of the six-seat V9X.
GWM (HKEX: 2333) launched the Wey V8X five-seat sport utility vehicle (SUV) on Friday, seeking a bigger share of the premium hybrid market with prices below those of its flagship V9X.
The vehicle comes in five configurations with retail prices of 239,800 yuan to 315,800 yuan, and limited-time promotional prices of 226,800 yuan ($33,410) to 302,800 yuan.
The Sport Max starts at 226,800 yuan under the promotion, while the Sport Ultra is 266,800 yuan. The Luxury Family Max is 246,800 yuan, the Ultra is 266,800 yuan, and the top-end Ultra+ is 302,800 yuan.
GWM also introduced incentives for family buyers. Customers get 3,000 yuan off for each GWM vehicle already owned under the same household, up to a maximum of 10,000 yuan for four or more.
The Wey V8X is the second production model on GWM’s Global One S platform and can be seen as a smaller version of the six-seat V9X. The V9X went on sale on May 18 starting at 349,800 yuan.
The vehicle is offered in Luxury Family and Sport versions. The Luxury Family version is 5,125 mm long with a wheelbase of 3,050 mm, while the Sport version is 5,040 mm long with a 2,968 mm wheelbase.
The V8X is powered by the Super Hi4 hybrid system paired with a four-speed hybrid-specific transmission, with a choice of 1.5 T and 2.0 T engines.
The top-end Ultra+ has a maximum system output of 500 kW (670 hp) and peak torque of 930 Nm, going from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds with a full battery and 4.7 seconds when the battery is low.
The Luxury Family Ultra and Ultra+ come with a 66.6 kWh ternary lithium battery and an 800-volt platform, supporting 6C fast charging that takes nine minutes to go from 30% to 80%.
Both versions offer 402 km of CLTC all-electric range and 312 km under WLTC. The Ultra version has a CLTC combined range of 1,659 km.
The V8X uses GWM’s in-house-developed Super Intelligent Chassis, which supports 20-degree bidirectional rear-wheel steering and a turning radius of 5 meters.
The vehicle also features an in-house-developed closed dual-chamber air suspension with 100 mm of travel, along with EDC continuously variable damping shock absorbers.
On the software side, the V8X carries the Coffee Pilot 4 assisted driving system, built on Nvidia’s 700 TOPS Thor-U chip, one LiDAR unit and 11 cameras.
GWM said users can pull away, change lanes, adjust speed, make U-turns and park using voice commands. The vehicle supports parking-spot-to-parking-spot Navigation on Autopilot (NOA).
The V8X enters one of China’s most competitive segments, going head-to-head with the Huawei-backed Aito M7, the Avatr 07L, the Voyah Free and the Audi E7X. It also faces pressure from all-electric models including the Onvo L80 from Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) and the IM LS6 from IM Motors.
The Wey brand sold 7,725 vehicles in July, down 23.10% year-on-year, according to data compiled by CnEVPost. The brand sold 52,239 vehicles in the January-July period, up 17.29% year-on-year.
